Something seems wrong with that.

I am very surprised by how few riots take place in Spain, and Greece in view of the suffering, and deprivation. The few people (some two hundred) who rioted in front of the Parliament building, in Athens yesterday were the predictable anarchist gangs who attach themselves to well behaved, peaceful demonstrations.

The anarchists are very well organised and supplied with Molotov cocktails, stones, bats and other weapons that they use with great violence against the police. There is a politically driven organisation behind such anarchistic violence that even directs, and controls the anarchist gangs to disappear swiftly into the ether after they have created chaos. Chaos is their aim. They succeed in materialising their objectives - just for an hour, or so.

Rioting following a sports event is much, much more common than is normally understood. Such post sporting event rioting can be traced back to ancient Rome, and ancient Constantinople when the blue, and green teams competed against each other in chariot racing at the local Coliseum.

Boston-area sports fans are becoming immune to the exhilarating joy of winning championships. It was only a few years ago that the celebrations following a New England Super Bowl victory or a Red Sox World Series win would result in mass chaos: cars being set on fire, looting, young women being shot in the eye…

Now, the championship victories have become so commonplace that the overwhelming desire to DESTROY has been replaced by the more tepid celebrations of a city inured by consistent victory: flower pot tipping.

Boston police only arrested 14 people last night, most of whom were slapped with mild disorderly conduct charges for offenses ranging from window-smashing to knocking over newspaper boxes. If the Red Sox or Patriots win again, Bostonians may very well be reduced to even milder public celebrations; firing water pistols in the air, leaving the phone off the hook or plucking the wings off of Gypsy moths.

Thankfully, Complex magazine has assembled a retrospective for those of us who long for the sports riots of championships past in all of their firestarting glory-.

I heard the Vancouver mess on the radio this am.

After constant harping on CEP all the time how much better Canada is than the USA -- it was a pleasure to hear that they can be jerks too.

It just doesn't make sense to tear up good stuff to celebrate a victory or show your disappointment over a loss.

I'm glad I live in a city that has class.

I am constantly amazed at the idignation expressed at political activities in contrast to absolutely igonoring the most depraved events occuring in our daily communities. I will often listent ot both the local, national and international news on my ride home then I pop into CEP and nothing is mentioned here. Whenever you post a thread about the vulgarity of mankind it gets politely ignored. Maybe a few yeah that sucks but no discussion.

A shame really.
