Our pharmacy offered automatic refills for insulin, I noticed that the vail was running low and called the pharmacy and of course a robot answered. After a few tries I spoke to a person that told me that the drs. office has discontinued the prescription. I called the doc and they called the pharmacy and were told that the med. was discontinued. The dr's office took this to mean that the pharmaceutical co. stopped making Humulin n. They then sent in a rx. that had been tried before and didn't work well.
I went to the pharmacy in person and was told that the insulin was still made, but the drs. office had discontinued the prescription when Lantis was ordered, the doc. had said to continue with Humulin but to cut the dosage and administer the Lantis at bed time.
The pharmacy blamed the drs. office, the drs. office blamed the pharmacy. I finally spoke in a firm but polite fashion with the drs. secretary and she said she would send a new rx. for Humulin. A few hours later I got a text from the pharmacy that the rx. for Humalog was ready. It was supposed to have been for Humulin, not Humalog. I was cutting grass for a client not far from the drs. office. I went there and had them print an Rx. for Humulin n. I then took the prescription to the pharmacy and handed it to the pharmacist. 15 minutes later I had the Humulin.

I start with being polite, I then go to being assertive, if that doesn't work, well I get a little pissed and let them know it. There is no excuse for this shit!

What a convoluted mess. Good for you that you followed through when no one else was able. Hopefully next time will go smoother.

It happens everywhere.
I recently bought some food products that were bad well before the expiry date. No help from the store when I was polite and courteous. Had to be rude and obnoxious to get a refund. They count on customers being too shy and accepting the loss.

If you weren't paying attention, taking the wrong drug could have had terrible side effects. And doctors and pharmacists are supposed to be competent capable people!

I used to count all those products in pharmacy refrigerators during the years I did inventory. I know the differences.
My advice? Don't do automatic refills. Ever. What if you're cured? Put your hands on the computer or smartphone now with me....
