Dashboard Confessional have been around and charting for 6 years.

I do like Mika, totally different from what I normally listen to.

i can't really think of any new artists i like.
most of the new music i discovered in 07 weren't new.

maybe CSS, Klaxons or Justice?

Yeah, I know about that but since it wasn't until the 2006-07 season that Dashboard Confesional cracked the Hot 100 for the very first time, I decided they warranted this. "Don't Wait" peaked at No. 80.

But it was the wonderful "Stolen," which peaked at No. 44 in the May 26, 2007 issue of Billboard, that made me really fall in love with Dashboard.

DC has a HUGE cult following that formed years ago. Chris Carraba was probably the first "emo" star that came from the scene. Even if their newest album and single peaked the highest technically, I wouldn't say that it's their breakthrough.

I can understand this applying to Feist, Amy Winehouse, and Brandi Carlile, who each had one less popular album prior to this year, and this year being their breakthrough.

Shelby Lynne released an album in 1989 and several more after that.

NARAS nominated her as Best New Artist in 2000 and she actually beat out Sisqo, Jill Scott and Brad Paisley that same year.

I don't feel I should withdraw my Dashboard Confessional entry (which only made Honorable Mention, not Top 10!!!) but if you guys insist, okay I will.

I'll nominate Regina Spektor instead. Happy now? :)

Below: Regina Spektor's FIRST Hot 100 entry was in January with the downright thrilling No. 84 gem, "Fidelity"

Regina has been around for a long time...

Whatever, Nomine. She didn't hit the Hot 100 for the very first time until 2007 and to me that constitues "new artist."

You're just trying to be difficult.

Mika
Kellie Pickler
Taylor Swift
Hayde P (from Heroes, she has alot of songs floating around limewire)
Beverley Mitchell (from 7th heaven)

i'm not trying to be difficult, i just don't understand why an artist who is well established is only "new" if they have a top 100 hit.

Dashboard Confessional is NOT a new artist. at all. in ANY way... neither are Feist or Regina Spektor.

So your sole criteria for a new artist is that they have to appear on the Hot 100? Lotsa bands and singers that sell tons of CDs never have a hit pop single. This confuses me.

Well you must have been way confused then in 2001 when NARAS gave Shelby Lynne the Grammy as Best New Artist even though she'd been recording for the past twelve years.

Plain White T's, The Shins, Hellogoodbye, etc. have all been putting out albums since the early part of this decade but it wasn't until '07 that they broke through on the charts. How about if we just call this FAVE BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST OF '07 since it's clearly not easy to establish what warrants a "new artist" title.

And BTW, where are you guys' Top 10 lists?

i understand that that's how the Grammys work, i just disagree with it. it totally disregards and belittles the work of artists who don't "break the charts" and their work.

and as i said above... i can't really think of any new artists that came out this year. i like Klaxons and Justice a lot, but they both came out in 07.

Alice Smith is new, she's good.

I don't want to make it look like I'm picking on you, but 2007 was not The Shins' breakthrough year. Maybe their last album did technically well on the charts, but that was due in part to their work that came out before. Remember "New Slang" from the movie Garden State?
