Not one of these women is even in the same league of Gay Idol as the Queen Herself, Bette Midler.

How in the hell could her name not have been mentioned thus far? She completely slipped my mind

...and she is replacing Celine in Vegas.

Silly, cute, former Missouri man, she was mentioned earlier...by me. :D

i·dol
–noun
1. an image or other material object representing a deity to which religious worship is addressed.
2. Bible.
a. an image of a deity other than God.
b. the deity itself.
3. any person or thing regarded with blind admiration, adoration, or devotion: Madame Curie had been her childhood idol.
4. a mere image or semblance of something, visible but without substance, as a phantom.
5. a figment of the mind; fantasy.
6. a false conception or notion; fallacy.

Personally the only way those people can be classed as an idol is of the "visible without substance" criteria. However they are widly admired and adored (most certainly blindly) by the gay community. Unfortunatly. Personally I like my GAY idols to be gay. Just a personal preference. Nor do I have any care for "diva's". It would have been nice to have added an Other (please specify) option but I suppose I can just do what I'm doing and not click an option and just tell you my opinion =P.

My personal Gay idol would be Sir Ian Ian Mckellen. He's just made of complete and utter awsome. No one in the world can be indoubt about his talents and commitments to the gay community. Also from what I've heard about him from people who've met him is he generally a very nice man. Plain and simple Ian McKellen kicks the "idols" mentioned in the poll like Magneto beats Wolverine.

That's what I thought too. For the life of me I can't understand why gay men seem so obsessed with female pop singers. PLEASE give me The Who, Zeppelin, or Pink Floyd anyday

I love those bands too but really like Madonna's "Ray of Light" CD. I like to mix it up when I have parties: The White Stripes, Pink, Johnny Cash, Madonna, Black Flag, Ike and Tina, X, The Donnas, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Social Distoriton, Chemical Brothers, early No Doubt, etc. (*8*) (!)

Well he said "Idol", which is what most people in this thread were arguing about the whole time. Not only this thread but past threads on this site has listed female popstars as idols. If they said icon then we wouldn't have to keep explaining it to them that those women are not gay idols.

While you're right, surge, in that these women aren't gay idols in the strictest sense, I don't think the OP meant it as a serious look at what makes a person a gay idol (I could be mistaken). We've watered down what the word idol means in pop culture today, what with all the various American Idol, Pop Idol, etc. versions running around. I just figure he meant icon or even diva instead, which is why I used that term instead.

I don't idolize anyone in its strictest meaning.

Love: Mariah & Madonna
Have Enjoyed: Barbra & Donna
Don't care about: Cher

I must say it's pretty ironic that the gay mans icon/idols are all women.

I won't bother voting on this, because women cannot truly be a gay guys idol/icon, as they are not gay men themselves.(just because we're attracted to the same sex, doesn't make them a good idol/icon)

Can't say I like any of them.

Why not have Freddie Mercury on there.... or at least Deborah Harry....
