I'm an American so...

Hero: Abraham Lincoln for ushering in a new age of civil rights and liberties.

Villain: The Neo-Con Religious Right. I have never seen such an abomination of irrationality and self delusion. Pastors who can't be happy with anything in the country, blonde bimbos who think they're witty for putting down any opposition to their beliefs (yeah, the protesting widows of all those killed soldiers totally don't care and would have divorced their husbands anyway, right?), and youth who think that revelling in the bigotry that's so frowned upon is somehow freedom and that they're free to attack others without being harmed themselves (I'll take a shotgun to the face of anyone here who says they're a member of Young Americans for Freedom, so help me God.)

But I do have some roots in my parent's homeland of China so...to the best of my knowlege...

Hero: Wong Fei-Hong. Hero of the people. Martial arts master and healing doctor.

Villain: Chairman Mao. Oppressive and cruel, unable to create the eutopia that he fooled others to believe in. When all was lost, he turned youth against their elders. And I'll never forgive him for what he did to the written Chinese language.

Hero: John Howard

Villains: Gough Whitlam, Paul Keating

I have grown to believe that the only thing that matters these days is the amount of 'unlimited' limit on your credit cards and a relative freedom to travel and work as you please.

The rest really does not matter.

Heroes: Bill Clinton, Tiburcio Vasquez, US Marines [lot of 'em], MLK, Jr.

Villains: Rush Limbaugh, Leaders of Christian Wright.

Hero - Thomas Edison

Villian - Franklin D. Roosevelt. He took a depression that was starting to recover and turned it into the great depression that lasted about four times longer than any other depression in history. He did this greatly increasing government spending, more than doubling tax rates (up to 90%) and by essentially trying to control business in the same way as communist countries do. He set up a commission that would determine how much of product a business could produce, what price they would charge and what they would pay their employees. Ultimately the Supreme Court declared the commission unconstitutional. How did FDR react, he set up another agency to replace it that didn't go as far. I believe it was Congress who put an end to the second agency. Had it not been for Hitler and subsequent death of FDR, FDR may have destroyed this country. There has never been a bigger threat to our freedom than FDR.

HISSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

And Clinton I think is bad-ass. He was a very good diplomat. He earned the respect of other nations. Even the ones that were bordering on adversaries. And his cavalier attitude toward things of naughty nature amused me greatly. The saxophone was also a nice touch. ^^

Clinton was completely clueless from a diplomatic standpoint. His administration made blunder after blunder, creating numerous international crisis, especially during his first term. They were so stupid that they would make announcements as to what a country was going to agree to before they even discussed it with them. In large part, his complete lack of leadership lead to the 911 attacks and the Iraq mess we are in now. His policy with Iraq was to draw a line in the stand and say don't you dare cross this line. When they did, he would draw a line and say you better not cross this one. Had the Clinton administration and the UN had the balls to enforce the sanctions at the time, the inspections would have never stopped and there wouldn't have been a question if weapons of mass destruction existed. If Clinton had stood up to the countries, like France, that were violating UN trade sanctions, Iraq would not have had the ability to seek the materials to make the weapons.

In addition, his administrations complete failure to perform any oversight of businesses (SEC's job) that lead to the problems of WorldCom, Enron and many others harming thousands. The primary reason the economy did so well during his presidency was Y2K. The year 2000 issues caused an amazing amount of high end computer systems and software to be replaced. Virtually every mid-sized or large company had a Y2K project. Let's also not forget that the newly Republican controlled Congress forced changes that turned around the negative slide of the economy.

He was the ultimate at making promises and not following through. His opinions on issues changed as often as his dick went up and down. Let's not forget the broken campaign promises, especially gays being able to serve openly in the military. Don't ask don't tell was essentially a cop out that kept the status quo.

Villains
Hitler, Stalin, collective reward for polish communists like W. Wasilewska and B. Bierut at least in the war and shortly after the war period (especially for saying things like "we demand, in the name of polish nation, to give the city of Lwow to Ukrainian Soviet Republic"), F. Dostojewski, a reknown russian writer, is a good example of a traitor as well, for, being polish of both parents, he not only turned russian, but hated Poles and portrayed them as badly as he could in his books.
Frederick the Great, Catherine the Great are considered great villains as well, because they partaged Poland. Somehow that does not apply to Marie Therese, who started the entire affair. Bismarck is considered great villain, for fighting Poles ruthlessly. Jozef Ankwicz is shown in schoolbooks as archetypic traitor; when foreign powers partaged Poland, they demanded from polish parliament to accept it. Russian soldiers were guarding the parliament, and were told not to leave until the parliament passes approvement of the partage. Parliamentarists agreed to give Russia what it wanted, but when it came to Prussia (which took Major Poland, the craddle of polish state), they protested against this partage by sitting in complete silence. After a couple of hours Russians were tired of this, and asked if the parliament accepts the partage or not. Then, Jozef Ankwicz replied that "silence means approval". He was executed during Kosciuszko uprising
Another great villains/traitors were the leaders of Targowica confederation. Because after the Great Parliament introduced the reformatory Constitution (the second state constitution in the world), some polish magnates asked Russia for help, to quash the reforms and re-establish Russian rule in Poland, securing the internal anarchy and their influences. This resulted in the second partage of Poland. These men included F.K.Branicki, S.Rzewuski and Sz.M.Kossakowski (who was cute http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Szymon_Marcin_Kossakowski_(1741-1794).jpg)
Earlier, there was B. Radziwill, who tried to carve up his duchy out of Lithuania during the Swedish Flood war. There were other traitors in this time - K. Opalinski, who surrendered polish army to Swedes without a fight (he wanted to become a duke of Major Poland in cooperation with Brandenburgians)
Then, there's Great Elector, Frederic Wilhelm, elector of Brandenburg and prince of Prussia, who betrayed Poland in this war, allied with Swedes and got independant.
Somehow, swedish kings themselves, though having done immense harm to Poland (artworks stolen, cities destroyed, up to a third of population killed), are not seen as great villains, while they should; Charles X Gustav, Charles XII
Teutonic Knights - a collective for owing their existance in over Baltic to Poland, and then attacking it when it was weak, taking its lands, claiming in Europe that Poles are pagans etc and attempting to destroy Poland as a whole.

Heroes another time or never. I should be learning, not writing at this forum :)

My choices are all sport related as sport is such an important part of the Aussie way of life and Australia reveres and treasures its sporting heroes. Conversely, we can be very disapproving and unforgiving towards any sportspeople who have disgraced their reputations or made our blood boil.

Heroes (there are so many... these are just a few who come to mind) ....... Don Bradman, Dawn Fraser, Ian Thorpe, Steve Waugh, Kieren Perkins, Cathy Freeman, Rod Laver, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Ken Rosewall, Louise Sauvage, Greg Norman, and even an animal .... the great racehorse, Phar Lap.

Villains Can't go past cricketer Greg Chappell and the infamous underarm bowling incident in the third final of the 1980/81 World Series Cup between Australia and New Zealand. Australia had scored a reasonable 4/235 but with one over left in the match, the Kiwis needed 15 runs for victory.

After a couple of blows by Richard Hadlee and Ian Smith, then a couple of quick wickets, New Zealand were left needing six runs to tie the match with one ball remaining.

The final delivery was to be bowled by Trevor Chappell (Greg's younger brother) to number 10, McKechnie. Greg Chappell (as Captain of the Australian team) ordered that he deliver the ball underarm. To the disgust of McKechnie and the obvious dismay of several Australian players, Trevor Chappell rolled the ball down the pitch carpet bowls-style, making it virtually impossible for McKechnie to hit a 6.

New Zealand Prime Minister, Robert Muldoon, called it, "the most disgusting incident I can recall in the history of cricket", and "an act of cowardice".

It still makes me cringe when I think about it.
