I keep finding these bugs on my patio, thankfully not in droves but every so often I'll see one flying around there and then eventually find one or two of them lying dead on the floor or sill. What's funny is that my patio is screened in completely, no holes -- but I think they are entering via a crevice in the wood. Pest control comes around monthly to spray but I guess no use.

Don't know what they are called though ... here's a pic of a recent deceased:

It's a bee it seems, I was going to say Yellowjacket but nope.

I beleive that the bug in the picture is in deed a Wasp, or possible a Yellow Hornet (not to be confused with The Green Hornet).

Definitely in the Wasp or Hornet family. Nasty little bastards when they live. They can keep stinging over and over. Painful but not lethal unless you are allergic or get swarmed. I would be glad it's dead.

Based on the wings I can see, it may not be a wasp or bee (hymenopteran) of any kind, since all hymenopterans have 4 wings, not just two. It may actually be a kind of dipteran ("fly" family) that just exhibits hymenopteran mimicry. If that's the case, it'd be doing a good job since if any of you guys saw it, you'd be loathe to swat it away or smush it for fear of getting stung.

It would have helped if you hadn't squashed it first.

I added that comment in my original post for you. I just always found the green hornet to be casually cool. Just an average joe superhero. None of those messy super powers to worry about. Plus he's 10x cooler then that fag "the green arrow".

It's a po' itty bitty little wasp. Prolly eats up mosquitoes or some other more horribler critter.
Wasps are good guys.

(P'Ricans are, too, to be sure.)

He's coming to get you!

Ah yes, I saw those when I had to do the old fashion bug collection a couple years ago. I believe its a mud wasp, and they can sting. I agree it's hard to tell from the picture that it has four wings, but I recognize the body shape and markings.

OK I'm pretty sure I found it. It's the Black and Yellow Mud Dauber, which is a member of the wasp family. They can sting, but supposedly do not do it often and also do not defend their nests, which are built out of mud. Here's some pictures of the lovely (or not so lovely) Sceliphron caementarium.

brandon posted a picture of a hornet, you on the other hand have a pic of a WASP, and it is likely a mud dauber wasp, or a paper wasp, depending on the area you live in. check around the outside of your house for a nest. look for things that look like a paper mache christmas ornament, or a chunk of mud that appears to have been thrown at your house. both are a type of nest, and you should carefully dispose of them otherwise you will have more lurking around.

Wow--you guys must be really bored.

Once I've seen any type of bug like that anywhere around, I call them dead bastards. It does look like the "dauber" to me, seriously though.

Great pics Silversmith.......

the green hornet as a feature film has been kicked around for years. the story/character concept as a whole would make for some great stories! of course he would need a good arch villain but i think the character would best lend itself to fighting corruption and organized crime! the gritty, true crime, 'street level' sort of stuff. ..|

Thanks guys! This was very educational ... I rather deal with this than NYC rats! A few specific replies.

Nope - did not squash it ... this is exactly how I found him/her lying on the sill.

As for the exterminator service not working, why do you think they're dying if not from the poison?

No clue whatsoever, unless they are one of those bugs that die after mating? Shame isn't it?

I have in fact noticed some of those, not many but it's like a chunk of grey gum with a hole in it - I figured they were nests but of course I don't mess with them. I live in an apartment complex and I'll have to alert the office to it. It's not a major problem per se but in a blue moon I find it annoying to want to use to patio (or get my bike from there) and there is one flying around. Those stingers are real ugly and look painful to endure!

I just saw one of those for the first time last week, I thought it was a flying ant at first. Thanks for identifying it:)
