I did some of my own checking on Wikipedia, and yes, Berliner is the name of a jelly donut. However, the article called the idea that JFK was laughed at for making his famous statement an urban legend. Apparently he used the term correctly, that those in the audience would understand what he meant, and their minds would not drift toward thinking about the pastry. This is not the first time I've had to follow up on something I"ve said on JUB, and I'm sure there will be more.

A Berliner is a German doughnut with no central hole, made from sweet yeast dough fried in fat or oil, with a marmalade or jam filling like a jelly doughnut, and usually icing, powdered sugar or conventional sugar on top. They are sometimes made with chocolate, champagne, custard, mocha, or advocaat filling, or with no filling at all.
They are called Berliners because invented by a baker in Berlin Germany in 1756, actually the people in Berlin call them pancake.

“All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words ‘Ich bin ein Berliner!’”

Well, there was no laughter at JFK when he said these famous words - everybody knew what the meaning was.

I still remember where I was when he was killed only 5 months after to his legendary Berlin visit. Several years later I stood at the site in Dallas where it happened and of cause I saw the Zapruder film. But that is another story...
