Zune or iPod?

I am on my third iPod. I have had one first and one second-generation shuffle, and both worked really well. I used iTunes with the music I had ripped from CD and downloaded/bought. I never had an issue with both, and both still work today.

I bought a 3rd generation nano last week (the one with video) and again, have had no problem. I made a playlist with the music videos and songs I wanted to sync, and I had my nano sync with the playlist. All of my album covers, videos, songs, notes, and iTunes purchased data transferred over. Took me 5 minutes to have everything there. Haven't had a problem in 2 and half years with any iPod.

Basically, I would choose an iPod. I never listen to the radio, need to record, or do any of the 'extra' stuff. If you want a MP3/AAC player that'll just play your music easily, use the iPod. You don't need to use the iTunes Music Store; you can buy MP3s from other music services and sync them (if unprotected) and rip your own DVDs and download music videos (such as here http://luke-musicvidz.blogspot.com/). I use iSquint to convert to iPod video format on Mac. Using these steps and attempting to be technologically-intelligent make the iPod the better choice.

And BTW, all of the horror stories about iPods are very few when placed into perspective. Some harddrives are doomed from the start, and viruses do not come from iPods. You can easily retrieve music from an iPod on Windows (by showing hidden folders/files, you'll then find an IPOD_CONTROL folder with all your files inside). And watching videos is fine on the 2.5" screen (it's even good on my nano's 2" screen). It's a music player, of course video is going to take the backseat.

So all in all, even though you chose a Zune, the iPod is much better. It has incredible resources available and at a reasonable price.

no offense mate but.....

umm whats your point i have used an ipod with no problems therefore it is better than everything else you dont compare the devices at all you just say one is better with no justification you have not used a zune or zune software

to say something is better you should have some sort of point counter point compare the devices you have done none of this

You say no offense but you start off offensively anyway; what I was giving was an a typical experience with an iPod/my own POV. Maybe a little idea of someone's use could help him make a decision.

BTW all electronic devices have problems, not just iPods. He is taking a risk no matter what he buys.

You don't even know me to say I haven't used Zune players and/or software, because yes, I have used Zunes before as well as the Zen models from Creative. In my opinion the iPod functions better with an easy interface and support from the company that produces it, and also provides music/videos/podcasts at reasonable prices.

i never said that devices dont have problems you did that

so you have used the NEW zune with the NEW interface? not that it matters but have you even seen it

I prefer the ipod as well.

You guys looking at the problem reports of the ipod have to remember, there are MANY more iPod users out there than users of any other music player, so you are more likely to hear of someone complaining of a problem, than say a Zune owner complaining of a problem.

Almost all of Apple's products are completely top quality in my experience, and the iPod is no exception. I have used many Apple products for the past 10+ years and they have been the most reliable in their class by far.

Before it was "cool" to have an iPod obviously a lot of people made the choice that the iPod was the best music player available.

zure need pc, ipod uses either. so if you use a mac, get an iPod. otherwise, whichever you like more.

Thanks, hotatlboi. Of course iPod problems will be more reported; a greater portion of people own the product. But then again, there are a lot of iPods in existence: (On September 5, 2007, during their "The Beat Goes On" event, Apple announced that the iPod had surpassed 110 million units sold.) That means the number of iPod problems affect a small amount of consumers. If anyone is going to cite issues experienced with iPod, then they should also cite problems with Zunes.

And thank you gangineer. The iPod offers compatibility with both Mac and PC. If any music player wants to overtake the iPod, they have to lure Apple/Mac users. Zune as well as Creative players don't do so. People using Mac will be more likely to choose iPod, and those with iPod will also return when a replacement is needed.

And yes _AJ_, I have used the new Zune and its respective software. Not my cup of tea. I enjoy my flash-based iPod, as do most customers (the iPod nano is the best-seller). It's a good choice; flash-based memory is more durable and lasting than hard drive models. So please, no more 'holier than thou' posts.

Well that's your problem, I am not gonna argue with someone supposedly 4 years older than me. I don't need to prove anything to you, so good-bye.

now who is trying to be holier than thou :-)

why dont you like the zune interface?
do you not like the zune pad do you prefer it just as a digital pad or the touch pad on the zune?
what of the zune interface would you like on your ipod?
for me i would like the twist part of the interface which allows you to switch between album artist and so on by clicking right and left

since you have "used" it why dont you tell us more would love to know your thoughts rather than ipod is teh best

Dunno anything about Zune, but I have one of the small clip-on iPod shuffles, and I love it.

As for iTunes, well you don't have to use it - I never have. I use linux, so iTunes is pretty useless for me.

-T.

WOW guys its ok i understand ipod is a great device mabye ill get him the ipod to. he luvs the zune though... hell he did give me gud sex over the new years

I had a friend that got a Zune for Christmas and he loved it... However, some of the gadgets like the radio tuner for the car and such were not as good as the ipod... then he wound up getting a VW Rabbit over the holidays and they come with a built in port for the ipod... problem is, you can't find a cable to hook the Zune in... so he wound up trading the zune for the ipod in the long run..

Thanks for offering another real-world use and perspective.

The only reason the iPod is "better" is because of the accessories. While that man had to trade in his Zune for a iPod, because of a CAR, he most likely liked the Zune better. Sadly it doesn't have the accessories.

I was reading a review of the Zune 2. They talked about how Microsoft got the MP3 player right, and that if this had come out a few years earlier, it would have dethrowned the iPod. Sadly, the iPod now has a stranglehold on the market. Mostly because of the accessories.

Your saying the Zune interface sucks. I don't get what your talking about. It is easier to use than the iPod interface. I remember having a problem finding the video and podcast sections. It is more customizable than the iPod and well it is just prettier.

The screen is bigger, better resolution. The sound quality is better. The navigation is better. It is big, but that comes what that huge screen, and it is a harddrive. Although the Zune 4 and 8GB's are really small.

Once the Zune is compatible on Linux and Mac and more accessories are made for it, this will be a iPod killer. It is already selling really well as the best alternative to iPod, but imagine the sells when Mac users can get to it. It took iPod about a year or two to be Window's compatible.

You do make a good point...| But the 4 & 8GB's are kinda good but if you want to look at tv shows and or movies get the more higher one 80 GB. One problem with the zune 4 & 8GB's are its kinda hard to read the songs, you know choose which ones you want, when you go to all songs you can get confused.

What you don't get is what I originally said: I used the interface, but prefer my iPod's. That's MY opinion. I never said it 'sucks'. It is a nice interface, true, but I am used to my iPod's and would choose it. You're a different person, you have different tastes. Get it?

And prettier? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And BTW, both 'Podcasts' and 'Videos' are listed on the main menu of the iPod, in plain view.

actually your original post says nothing of the sort it just says the ipod is better and nowhere ever mentions the zune for a comparison whatsoever

Yeppers. In the original post, you said that the iPod interface was superior and easier to use.
