^ You say the ship didn't go down fast. But it went down in a state of blackness.

Can you imagine finding your way around, up and down strange corridors at strange angles? and all in a state of blindness!

The lights didn't go out straight away.

...and just think, in 2097 we can celebrate the 100th anniversary of the disaster known as "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion...
I swear I must be the only person who likes that song

But seriously, I think that's Celine at her best O:) Not a massive Celine fan though.

I think most of the blackness was in the hearts of men.

Do not believe their care was for the common man. Their whole world sucked the ass of the rich.

Deference was their mentality.

The lights were on until surprisingly late. It is documented by those in the lifeboats, and their accounts.
This is true. The crew managed to keep the lights on for a long period of time after she was hit by the Iceberg. Her lights went out just minutes before she went underwater.

^ All your talk of 'common man' sounds like Socialism.

A ship at sea is not a commune. Rules, heirarchy and discipline must be maintained. Lots of the staff and the third class passengers were hot-headed, angry Irishmen, and as you know, they were planning their own revolution at that time.

I try to imagine how shocking it was to see the headlines about the "unsinkable". To put things more into perspective, in 1912, people were not connected to the media 24/7 like they are today. They had not been desensitized to news about tragedies such as this like much of our current population is. And the headlines did not reach most newspapers until Tuesday, April 16, even though it sank shortly after midnight on Monday, April 15. It took a day and a half for the news to reach the general population.

This is true. The crew managed to keep the lights on for a long period of time after she was hit by the Iceberg. Her lights went out just minutes before she went underwater.

The efforts of the crew are just another tale of heroism from the disaster. As soon as the ship hit the iceberg, they started working to shut down the boilers to prevent them from exploding and the crews in the engine room worked tirelessly, sacrificing their own lives to keep the ship's light on as long as possible. As you said, the lights stayed on until the very end, finally going out immediately before the ship began to break apart. They truly worked until the bitter end.

Maybe the Captain shouldn't have shut down the engines forcing steam release to keep the boilers from blowing.
Perhaps if the Captain ordered RMS Titanic full steam ahead while seriously being involved in the Marconi radio room with contact to the Californian & Carpathia he could have coordinated a rendezvous.
He would have closed some miles between the ships making rescue more feasible. There was nothing to be gained by full stop just to lower half empty life boats into the icy waters that would never be used as shuttle ferries for more passengers.

Also once it was known how fast RMS Titanic was sinking those life boats should have been over loaded on those smooth glassy waters that calm night. None should have been put down half full or even at capacity. The choice was obvious. The mistakes by the crew tragic.

Nope, dam the torpedo's Full speed ahead, stoke those boilers and move that sinking bitch closer to another ship.

The Captain was responsible for major managerial fuck ups, and he is too blame.

Success has a thousand fathers, failure, none. They did their best as they saw it. Condemnation now is hardly effective.

It is amazingly unfortunate that we cannot learn from our lessons. Think of the most recent international headline cruise ship sinking. All of the survivors report mass chaos and poor communication by the crew.

No one is ever prepared fully for random occurrence. Chaos ultimately ensues. Failing to prepare is choosing to fail.

As for the steerage passengers and their unequal amount of loss? Ships are incredibly complex to find your way in and around. Water tight doors that fell most likely altered the normal routes people took and that means finding new ways to the deck. The crew may not have have some dark desire to not help them but were more than likely overwhelmed by the situation.

It did cause the life boat rules on all sea going vessels to be modified. For every lessons mankind learns must be in blood.

For those on the eternal voyage, may you find rest at the end of your journey.

My post four hours ago was trying to say that the Concordia failed due to human error while the Titanic failed due to a combination of human error and substandard materials.

Ramming the iceberg head on would have been a very irresponsible thing to do. At 45,000 tons and travelling 20.5 knots at the time, the ship's inertia would have caused massive damage to the bow. Although the ship would not likely have sunk…

That TV doco, that I mentioned before, aimed to avoid the emotion and give a scientific reason for the sinking. It said the ship's designers were confident of the Titanic because the arrangement of the bulkheads was based on what they learned from the SS Arizona whose bow hit an iceberg yet was still able to float and steam on.

My 16 year old cousin who saw Titanic said the following: "Don't you ever think, if you watch the Titanic movie backwards, it's much better, cuz then it's about a magical ship that saves people".

I died laughing.

I love the new research that has been presented by NGC and the History Channel regarding the breakup of the ship. The new theory finally makes sense. I just wish Cameron had somehow fixed the sinking sequence in the movie. It's forever going to be pop culture's understanding of the sinking and it's incorrect.
