2011 JUB Meet - Portland, Oregon - August 5-7

Like I said, I don't drink, neither does Sausy. He drinks soda or water, I drank water the entire time I was there at Daniel's apartment.

Sometimes sarcasm or jokes never seem to be translated well with people who are intoxicated or who had a few beers. I am always sober and hell even I can't see if a person is being sarcastic or making a funny joke.

LilBit I am sorry I didn't get the chance to talk with you more but I'm shy so I hope you don't think I was being a stuck up bitch.

^No, not at all! I'm actually painfully shy myself (when I'm not medicated), so I didn't take it personally at all. We also managed to end up at opposite ends of the table at brunch, which kind of hindered conversation. I did enjoy meeting you, and I hope we can meet again. I also enjoyed meeting Tony.

As an aside, I'd forgotten about the blackberry patch that Thad1527 and frankfrank discovered.

The next day frankfrank picked a good sized amount and brought them over.

mikey97006 took some home to incorporate in pastries, and StationToStation and I are enjoying some now. Very tasty blackberries!

Thursday
At 3:30 a.m., my taxi arrived to take me to the airport. I hadn't slept at all that night. This, I was later to discover, would set the tone for the rest of the weekend.

I didn't sleep much on the RDU-Houston leg of my flight, but I did manage to sleep almost all the way from Houston to Portland. I arrived at my hotel around noon, and it was too early to check in, so I stowed my baggage and called swerve and opinterph. They also weren't able to check in yet (we were all staying at the same hotel), but they swung by the hotel and picked me up, and we all went to Elephant's, where we got an incredible meal that included the best au gratin potatoes I've ever had. (Many thanks for the recommendation, Ted!)

Then we met up with NineofClubs very briefly, then returned to the hotel. Swerve and opinterph's room was ready, but mine wasn't. Fortunately, swerve and opinterph were gracious enough to let me hang out with them until my room was ready. After a shower and a change of clothes, we all headed up to NoC and StS's apartment, where we met Frank and Thad.

StS recommended dinner at a nice hotel (whose name I've forgotten), where the cafe had a classic Hollywood theme. I ordered the gayest drink on the menu, and StS ordered the third gayest drink. The food turned out to be incredible. Someone ordered a dish of sauteed mushrooms that was divine, and I got a (I'm not making this up) gorgonzola cheesecake.

After dinner, Thad and Frank had to go, but I went back with StS and NoC to relax at their place for a while. StS and I shared some funny YouTube videos, and NoC opened a delightful bottle of wine. Finally, NoC and StS escorted me to the tram stop, and I got to witness the colorful amalgamation of people that wander the streets of Portland after dark.

All in all, a fun day, and not too exhausting.

Yes it is the Hotel Deluxe it's a hotel homage to the Golden age of Hollywood , too bad swerves and openturf missed that it's my favorite bar in town, since they decided to split with the group and go to the rainbow room. I'm glad the rest if the group experienced the best local mushrooms and food items on the menu. Yes you ordered the Rose Colored Glasses and had the Rita Moreno champagne cocktail, IMO the gayest drinks on the menu lol! Our server was so cute and food so delish! :) the other server was a sassy pants too. I love that bar, it's where Id an affair to remember, and I did with my fellow jubbers!!! That night :)

^I think the lavender-flavored cocktail was the second-gayest.

Anyhoo...

Li'l Bit's Rememberies, Part II

Friday
I woke up fairly early and got breakfast at my hotel. Aside from the coffee, it turned out to be excellent. I got a skillet with home fries, veggies, scrambled eggs, and local goat cheese.

After that, I went out and did a bit of shopping with swerve and opinterph. I found some delightful tea, we looked at some meteorites and other neat rock/mineral/fossil-type stuff, and swerve got the worst falafel he'd ever tasted.

After that, we went to NoC and StS's place, where dinner preparations were already underway. By this point we were also joined by Kulindahr and Mikey. NW007 showed up a bit later, and GamerBear and Antdak showed up after them. We all lugged the food and drinks up to the roof, where we had a lovely view of the entire city and the outlying areas. Dinner included lamb and veggie skewers, salmon, a Greek pasta salad, a selection of local cheeses, a salmon spread, a cherry-hazelnut spread, and a wide selection of breads.

StS had to leave us to go to a friend's birthday party, but he returned after dinner. At some point, he decided that pants were optional. A note for future reference, Bobbi darling: if you're going to drop trou, make sure you're not wearing ratty drawers.

Eventually we all drifted back to out homes and hotels, because we had a busy Saturday ahead of us...

Is that the same hotel we had brunch in a couple of years ago???

IF SO -- I agree that it was a cool looking bar -- it wasn't open when we were there though...

:):):)

your job next time to have my underwear preselected before I take off my pants!

^Just don't steal mine. Mine is too damn pretty for you.

Odd thing is that StationToStation recently bought much new underwear.

Maybe he felt the JUB Meet didn't warrant the best stuff? :-)

Li'l Bit's Rememberies, Part III

Saturday
Saturday was a busy day...

Swerve, despite having only gotten three hours of sleep, came down and joined me for breakfast at our hotel. He had tried to call me and let me know how exhausted he was, but I was in the shower, so I missed him. In spite of the sleep deprivation, we had a lovely breakfast (I got the banana-walnut pancakes this time, along with scrambled eggs and veggie sausage. Apparently Swerve and I get very different brands of veggie sausage at home, because he thought the hotel's sausage was spicy, but I thought it was pretty mild. All in all, though, it was a great meal.) Opinterph even managed to make an appearance, if only to grab a cup of rather disappointing coffee before going back upstairs to shower and change.

Swerve and opinterph needed a bit of time to wake up and get ready, so I met Thad and Frank to take the tram to the Saturday Market. I may be getting my days mixed up, but I believe this was the day we saw the most unusual car accident ever. A guy rear-ended another car, which in turn hit the car in front of it. The three drivers pulled around the corner and off to the side to exchange information. Nobody was hurt, and the damage to the cars wasn't particularly extensive. The surprising thing, however, was that everyone was smiling and pleasant! Everyone exchanged information without yelling or pointing fingers, and once they were done, they all went on their way. Never let it be said that Portland is an unfriendly city!

When the three of us got to the meeting place at the market, we were the first to arrive. Almost immediately, a woman with a badge came up and gave the three of us a citation! Frank was cited for an attempted mustache, Thad was cited for "being just my type and resisting arrest," and I was cited for being "too good-looking." !oops! Turns out she was collecting money for hot meals for the homeless. I had to admire her approach, so I gave her a donation, and I got a hug out of it.

Eventually everyone arrived, and we wandered around the market for a while. As Frank can tell you, I live in an area that takes its arts very seriously, and we have a lot of skilled craftspeople, so I was really impressed by the goods for sale at the Portland market. I ended up buying a neat little ceramic oil lamp. There were some other things that caught my eye, but I didn't have much room in my luggage to take stuff home.

After that, we met up with SinfulSimon and walked along the waterfront for a while. SS had a busy schedule, so he wasn't able to spend much time with us, but I really enjoyed meeting him.

IIRC, our next stop was the Oregon Health Sciences University, where we took the aerial tram down the hill. We got an interesting view of the city, and swerve got a great video of the ride.

After that, I think our next stop was the underwear store, where there was a (very unenthused) live model, whom Thad took for a mannequin. :~) I managed to find a few lovely items in purple (which figure prominently in a later incident...)

At this point, my timeline gets really wobbly. I think our next stop was a little park that was reclaimed from an industrial waste site. It was a neat little place, and it seemed to be a popular spot for sunbathing. (We found one particularly lovely young thing laying out in nothing but a Speedo. We passed by his way several times, and I believe someone got him on camera.) :~) This was also where swerve got interviewed.

From there, I believe we caught a bus to 23rd street, which was a neat little commercial district. We walked for a while, checking out the cool businesses and interesting people, and we eventually ended up back at NoC and StS's place, where we were met by JustBelieve18. It turns out that he's much less enigmatic in person than he is in his avatar. :~) We had a nice chat about teaching, and he discovered that NoC mixes a lovely G&T.

Dinner was a laid-back affair in the apartment, and we spent most of the evening sitting around and chatting. At around 1 a.m., I was one of the last people there, and I figured that I had missed the last tram back to my hotel, so I asked StS if he could call me a cab. He suggested that we go to Matador (StS's favorite hipster bar), and I could get a cab from there. I was fine with that, so I waited a few minutes for StS to change into appropriate attire. (Apparently hoodies are de rigueur for hipster bars. NoC was stunned, because he had never seen StS in a hoodie.)

While StS was getting changed, I suggested that NoC, Kuli, Sausy, and I greet him pantsless in exchange for the lovely display of ratty underwear from the previous evening. His reaction was underwhelming, unfortunately.

We got to the bar, got our drinks, and went back to the dance floor. It was big enough for one and a half people, and I think there were five or six of us dancing, so it was an interesting experience. The DJ looked like a frightening librarian out of a Tim Burton film, so of course I immediately loved her. There was a photo booth in the bar, and on the side there was a card that said "We <3 boobs! Please share!" and the wall was covered with boob shots. I was enthralled, and when I pointed it out to StS, he suggested that we get our pictures takes (without boobal showage). (I'll post the pictures once I figure out how my scanner works), and as we were waiting for our photos, two guys decided to make out in the booth. I think StS was jealous, because he kept giving them the stink-eye.

At closing time, StS had trouble hailing me a cab (they were all full, apparently), so we walked back to his place, where he called me a cab. It was at this point that I realized that I had left my shopping bag (containing my oil lamp and my purple undies) at the bar. Fortunately, I was able to call them and ask them to hold on to it for me, and I picked it up the following day. (StS went with me. Before I could even open my mouth, he loudly announced to the whole bar "He left his underwear here last night!" Clearly subtlety is not one of his virtues.)

I think I finally got to bed around 3 a.m.

Here's the picture from the photo booth! Apparently the "defects" are intentional because hipsters like fucked-up pictures. :~)

Gah. I knew I'd forget something. I was reminded (thanks, swerve!) that we went to the Portland Rose Garden. I think that was Saturday, but I honestly can't remember when. I think it might have been after dinner. 'Twas lovely. We discovered that the most interesting-looking roses are generally the ones with little or no scent. There were some lovely purple-grey roses that I would have gladly stolen if it were more feasible and less illegal. :~)

It's really difficult to compare meets all of which are different from each other (like the Portland and St. Louis meets were near-opposites), but this is probably my favorite of the six JUB meets I've been to. Some people who know me better, though, know that "chillin' out" is usually my favorite type of social interaction and, if there are activities, things such as casual walking (even if fairly long distances), picnics, etc. are my favorite. The Silverado's stop was cool, too - the clubbing didn't dominate the weekend, and it was definitely very helpful that the music volume wasn't too loud. (Yes, it was loud, but there's a level that causes a number of unpleasant sensations, and that wasn't true at Silverado's.)

I hope to see some or all of you at future JUB meets. Well, not ALL of you - there wouldn't be room or maybe the JUB meet would need to be held at a stadium, LOL!! As great as this meet was, I felt sad that some who had hoped to show up, eventually couldn't get there. Sinfulsimon did PM me that he enjoyed meeting all of us during the small amount of time he was able to carve out, I thought that would be a good thing to pass on.

My thanks to all who made this long and excellent JUB Meet possible, and again I'm very happy I could be a part of it.

Li'l Bit's Rememberies, Part IV

Sunday
Sunday started a bit later than the other days. We all met up for brunch at Crush. The food was good and plentiful, and the drinks were interesting. I got a mimosa with prickly pear puree, which ended up being much pinker than I expected.

From there we migrated to Mississippi Ave, where we walked off the meal and visited a few neat little shops. One of them was full of neat stuff like animal skulls. There was a mummified cat fetus in a glass coffin that caught my attention. Fortunately, it was way too expensive, because I just may have ended up buying it if it were cheaper. :~)

I believe our next stop was a return to Crush, where Bobbi had left her [strike]vagina[/strike] wallet. Then Bobbi and I retrieved my bag from Matador and then went back to NoC and StS's place.

At five, we went to Silverado's, where I made an interesting discovery: apparently I'm a stripper magnet. For some reason, they kept coming straight towards me and chatting with me. One of them offered me a lap dance, and I accepted. I had never had one from a guy, so I was kind of intrigued, and it only cost $20 plus tip. How did it go? Well, let's just say that now whenever I hear "Poker Face," I get an instant stiffy. !oops!

After that, we went back to NoC and StS's place, where we watched I love Lucy and True Blood. GamerBear and Antdak stopped by, and we all split a pizza for dinner. It was a nice, low-key way to end the weekend.

Eventually, I had to say my goodbyes, and most of the guys even flashed their tits before I left. (Thanks, guys!)

Monday

I got up early-ish to join Frank and Thad for breakfast at Lenny's. (DENNY'S!!!) After we ate, we said our goodbyes, and I went off to catch my plane.

As it turns out, my flight was delayed, so I missed my connection in Houston. The customer service desk wasn't very helpful, but eventually I managed to find the right place to get a hotel voucher and a meal voucher. They put me on a 7:15 a.m. flight to RDU, which meant waking up around 5.

I barely got any sleep, and I actually woke up before the alarm went off, so I was able to take my time getting ready. The hotel restaurant wasn't open yet, so I had to wait until I got to the airport to get breakfast. I slept the entire way to RDU, and when I got home, I fell asleep almost immediately.

All in all, it was a great trip. Lots of neat sights, but not so packed that I was exhausted by the end. I got to see some old friends and meet some new ones, and the group was small enough that we all really got to interact with each other.

Can't wait for the next meet! :~D

I just noticed swerve's BLOG about the JUB meet, and some things have been changed, taken out, added to, etc. - definitely a detailed and good overview of what a "good JUB meet" is all about. I enjoyed reading through it, especially as it has been written by somebody who is very descriptive and great with words. Cool!!

I am so happy that I was able to go, and I feel very happy for all of those who were also able to experience one of the "CLASSIC" JUB meets a week ago, even those who could show up for only a short while. As the hosts already know, I'll gladly use any excuse, even a flimsy one, to make my way to Portland. It is a long way from here, and it hasn't traditionally been a destination of mine...I've spent more time there in the past year than in the previous 63 years of my lifetime.

Between LilBit's posts, and swerve's blog, a reader can get a great overview of the JUB meet, and it will be evident that there were a lot of great times to be had.

[STRIKE]But first you'll have to drop your drawe[/STRIKE] YEP...done! It was a long read, but necessarily so when such good times are being summarized. Between your blog, the swerve blog, and the LilBit posts, any reader can now get a VERY good idea what a JUB Meet is all about, because between the three sources all of the hours and activities are pretty much covered.

Your blog, for example, covers a great deal of the "missing" time period after most of us had to catch our trains.
