2011 Most Anticipated Music Releases

Dev Hynes, the former Test Icicles frontman who more recently recorded as Lightspeed Champion, now has another new alter-ego: Blood Orange. And now Consequence of Sound reports and Domino confirms that the debut Blood Orange album Coastal Grooves is on its way. The album arrives August 8 in the UK, August 30 in the U.S., and August 29 everywhere else. CoS also has a stream of first single "Sutphin Boulevard".

Below is the tracklist for Coastal Grooves, as well as the crispy black-and-white video for "Dinner".

On September 13 in the U.S. and September 12 in the UK, restless indie-pop mastermind Annie Clark, better known as St. Vincent, will release her new album Strange Mercy on 4AD. Clark recorded the album with producer John Congleton, the man who produced her last album, 2009's Actor. According to a press release, the new LP will feature the same sort of elaborate orchestration that we've heard on previous albums. Vintage keyboards, horns, violins, and woodwinds all make appearances. Song titles include "Cruel", "Cheerleader", and "Surgeon".

It looks like Radiohead aren't done promoting their latest release, The King of Limbs, just yet.

Next month, Radiohead plan to kick off a series of limited edition 12" releases holding remixes of the King of Limbs tunes.

First up will be their tune, "Little by Little" remixed by Caribou and their song, "Lotus Flower," remixed by Jacques Greene. The 12" albums will be released via XL and Ticker Tape, available through various record shops and Radiohead's Website.

Their first round of remixes will be available July 5th.

Canadian outfit Azari & III will release their debut album this August on Loose Lips Records.

With the help of a few different guest vocalists, Christian Farley and Alphonse Lanza have pushed a mixture of house, electro and pop for just over two years. They've put out a handful of 12-inches through a variety of labels, but none more far reaching than Reckless With Your Love, which went on to be remixed by Tensnake and and became one of 2010's most pervasive tracks. Word of their debut album first surfaced about a year ago, though none of the details were in until now.

"The album has been ready for quite some time," Farley recently told RA. The recording process was a "slow amalgamation" rather than a concentrated series of sessions. "Basically it was just one song, then the next, and the next... There was definitely no pressure involved in getting an album ready for a label or anything like that. And it's not like we got into some mansion in LA with a bunch of amazing gear and stayed there for two months just making an album. It was a long, slow, drawn out process."

Which isn't to say it wasn't inspired. "We went in there, balls out, ready to try anything. We had a vision, came up with this word 'Manhooker'" says Farley, referring to their 2009 track that gets a new vocal version on the album, with lyrics by "a really intense character from Paris" named Matilde. "I think we just wanted to make art. We weren't really trying to make anything except a beautiful piece of sound."

Azari & III are currently devising a live performance, featuring the core duo along with Fritz and Hans Helder, the former of whom has done studio work for the group in the past. "When me and Fritz started working together, it was like 'He's black, I'm white, I’m straight, he's gay, I'm tall he's short.' One day I knew he'd be on that stage with me and we would take it to another level."

Tracklist
01. Into the Night
02. Reckless (With Your Love)
03. Tunnel Vision
04. Indigo
05. Lost In Time
06. Infiniti
07. Change of Heart
08. Manhooker
09. Undecided
10. Hungry for Power
11. Manic

Loose Lips Records will release Azari & III's self-titled album on August 1st, 2011.

London's The Horrors announced that they will be releasing third album 'Skying' July 11th in the UK and July 26th in the U.S. on XL Recordings. It was produced and recorded by the band in their self built studio in Dalston, London. Excited to hear what direction they might be going in. I really dug their 2009 album 'Primary Colours' which was a bit of a departure for them. They are streaming a track from the new record "Still Life" that is pretty sweet! Slow and dark with a post punk 80's new wave feel to it. In other words brilliant! Definitely a top album I'm looking forward to hearing this year.

Skying Tracklisting:

1. Changing the Rain
2. You Said
3. I Can See Through You
4. Endless Blue
5. Dive In
6. Still Life
7. Wild Eyed
8. Moving Further Away
9. Monica Gems
10. Oceans Burning

omg i love them soooo much, I don't know how I feel about the new song, it sounds too 80s for me, but can't wait to hear more.

Grace Jones readies first U.S. release in 22 years

Long before the shock jock tactics of artists like Lady Gaga and Bjork, there was the inimitable Grace Jones.
Known for her androgynous features, sky-high flat top and over the top outfits, the Jamaican-born singer rose to prominence in the 1980s. She frequented famed discotheque, Studio 54, became a muse for Andy Warhol and served as style inspiration for many female singers to come.
She also topped the charts with her signature blend of New-Wave pop and synth-laden dance numbers like “Slave to the Rhythm” and “I’m Not Perfect (But I’m Perfect For You).
Now at the ripe age of 63, Jones is ready to release new material.
The new album is titled “Hurricane V2 (In Dub)” and is expected to drop in the U.S. on September 6.
It is a rerelease of Jones’ 2008 album “Hurricane,” and is entirely in dub. It is produced by Ivor Guest and will also include contributions from ambient mastermind, Brian Eno.
Where the original album was a bit darker and less poppy than Jones’ previous releases, the dub version is sure to be perfect dancefloor antidote.

Nirvana's Nevermind 20th Anniversary Celebrated with Deluxe Reissue Box Set

Nirvana's Nevermind turns 20 on September 24, and the band's label, Universal, is planning to celebrate the milestone anniversary of the landmark release with a bonus-packed reissue. The set will be a 4-CD/1-DVD package, featuring rarities, B-sides, and unreleased recordings. Also included are unspecified BBC radio appearances and an unreleased concert in its entirety on DVD. It hits stores on September 19.

During the band's seven-year run, Nirvana recorded only three studio albums; the 2004 box set With the Lights Out remains a definitive collection of rarities, b-sides, demos, and other ephemera. The BBC radio appearances, however, are most likely from four in-studio sessions recorded between 1989 and 1991. (Two of those recordings, for John Peel and Mark Goodier's radio shows, were included on the group's 1993 rarities LP Incesticide).

Two months after being released, Nevermind pushed the grunge revolution to the top of the album charts, and went on to sell 30 million copies worldwide. SPIN selected it as the greatest album of the 1990s.

Universal is also planning to celebrate the anniversary with "various events and releases" throughout the year, according to a statement.

Throbbing Gristle reactivate Industrial Records, ready “final” LP and reissues

“Industrial Records hereby announces it’s official re-activation. IR is the sole representative of, and ONLY official label representing and releasing records by Throbbing Gristle.

“TG’s contract with Mute/EMI expired in June 2010, and despite a number of other offers and proposals, all four members of TG elected to re-start Industrial Records to re-release the IR/TG catalogue and the final TG studio album Desertshore along with other archival recordings.

“IR has purchased ALL the remaining warehouse stock of the Mute Records editions of TG recordings. The first batch for sale comprises of the last remaining copies of the original editions of TGV DVD boxed-set, Part Two – Endless Not CD and double vinyl LP along with bargain priced ‘end-of-line’ titles including – The Second Annual Report, D.O.A. The Third & Final Report, Heathen Earth and 20 Jazz Funk Greats.”

These items are available now, exclusively at the TG Mail Order site.

Then, on September 26, IR will release a series of deluxe vinyl editions of the classic albums The Second Annual Report, D.O.A. The Third & Final Report, Heathen Earth, 20 Jazz Funk Greats and Throbbing Gristle’s Greatest Hits, each remastered by Chris Carter and pressed in a limited edition of 2000 copies and packaged with 8-page colour booklet featuring photos (some previously unpublished), press clips and “other visual ephemera from the Industrial Records archive.

These same albums will also be made available as digital downloads in AAC, MP3 and FLAC formats, and on CD as part of a TG Time Capsule series of reissues.

“Each title has been remastered by Chris Carter and comes packaged for the first time in the digi-pak format to better represent their original IR LP artwork. Each release in this ‘Time Capsule’ series, comes with an additional disc of selected TG live performances culled from our TG24 archive recordings. They are selected to represent TG live performances specific to the original release year of each album.”

Last but not least, the band confirm that they will no longer perform under the name Throbbing Gristle, concurring with the late Peter Christopherson’s words:

“About the future of TG live. I do not regard it as possible for any changed band or variation of personnel to perform live as Throbbing Gristle without all the original four of us on stage.”

TG are currently putting the finishing touches to “the final TG studio album”, their long-gestating re-interpretation of Nico’s Desertshore. This is expected to see release in early 2012.

M83 Reveal Plans for "Epic" Double Album

On 2008's Saturdays = Youth, M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez crafted a gorgeous, nostalgia-steeped ode to 1980s pop culture, the era when John Hughes movies dominated the box office and bands like Simple Minds and Duran Duran were everywhere on the radio. It was the group's most commercially and critically successful album — a radical departure from the spacey, atmospheric sound collages of previous discs like 2005's Before the Dawn Heals Us.

Now Gonzalez, who recently relocated from Antibes, France, to Los Angeles, is gearing up for his comeback and the band's forthcoming set (slated for October) looks to be their most expansive yet.

"It's a double album," Gonzalez tells SPIN, adding that it will have a conceptual element. "It's mainly about dreams, how every one is different, how you dream differently when you're a kid, a teenager, or an adult. I'm really proud of it. If you're doing a very long album, all the songs need to be different and I think I've done that with this one. Overall, it's pop — and very epic. Anyone who loved M83 before, they'll love this album even more. People that hated me, they're going to hate this, too."

Sonically, Gonzalez says he's splitting the difference between the slick, synth-pop of Saturdays and the more ambient work of Before the Dawn. Short interludes will be interspersed among longer tracks, and Gonzalez is testing out new instruments like acoustic guitar. He hasn't quite nailed down song or album titles yet — Gonzalez just wrapped up mixing the album two weeks ago — but he does reveal that guests will include Zola Jesus and Brad Laner from Medicine, the cult noise-pop band who were once signed to Rick Rubin's American Recordings in the '90s. Beck and Nine Inch Nails' bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen is also contributing.

"The track that Brad sings on is just gorgeous — he did incredible work on that," says Gonzalez. "And Zola's track is very orchestral and very big. It's almost like a duet."

Gonzalez' singing partner and keyboardist Morgan Kibby delivered many of Saturday's highlights — her feathery soprano offered a nice contrast to Gonzalez' dense, atmospheric squalls. This time around, Kibby has dialed down her contributions, although she did co-write lyrics and sings back-up. "We're best friends," says Gonzalez. "And she'll be on tour with me again, it's just I want every album to be a bit different." Gonzalez also adds that's he grown confident as a singer, after touring relentlessly behind Saturdays. "All the vocals on older records was very quiet and whispery," he says. "This time, I feel more like a singer, even if I'm not a great singer. There's so much improvement in my vocals. People will be surprised."

After his move to Los Angeles, Gonzalez is angling to do more soundtrack work, once promotion and touring for the new album wraps up, and he's recently teamed with an agent to start seeking out projects. (He'd prefer to forget about his work on the French movie L'Autre Monde (Black Heaven), which he told Pitchfork was a "shitty soundtrack" for a "shitty movie.") "I don't have anything now, but I have some cool projects, although I can't really say anything about them yet," he says.

Overall, Gonzalez seems most psyched about his change of address — reborn, even. "It's a different world," he says. "But it's the best place for me. I can see a different band every night, see a different movie every night. I feel like a teenager all over again."

Mixed by Brennan Green (Chinatown Records, New York) and Lars Nissen (Denmark), the album features co-compositions and co-productions with Andy Butler of Hercules & Love Affair, which is a pretty amazing talent pool if we do say so ourselves!
