Susan Boyle releases new album November 1st

Susan Boyle returned to the America’s Got Talent stage to debut “You Have To Be There,”*a new song from her third album Someone to Watch Over Me. Backed by a veritable string symphony and a spectacular light show, Boyle belted the song square in her Les Mis-style wheelhouse and received a solid round of applause after. “I’m so pleased the audience enjoyed the song. I really loved performing that big number. I was also a little nervous introducing something new,” said Boyle. The diva’s overnight success story in the wake of her 2009 Britain’s Got Talent audition will be made into a musical entitled I Dreamed a Dream that’s scheduled to premiere in Newcastle, England, next March. See Boyle’s full performance after the jump.

Boyle has sold 14 million albums worldwide.

Soma Records -- 20 Years [SOMA CD095] Triple CD release featuring Daft Punk - Drive Unreleased 1994

Release date: 19/09/2011
Disc 1 -- Soma Classics
Disc 2 -- Slam DJ Mix
Disc 3 -- Silicone Soul DJ Mix

At the tail end of 2010 we combed through boxes of DATs, pictures and god knows what else to find artefacts of Soma's early days," Chris Lamb (from Soma, Daft Punk's first label) writes. "Imagine our surprise when we discovered a tape simply titled 'Daft Drive'. We hooked up the DAT machine and inserted the tape with the utmost care, pressing play and praying that for one, the tape contained what we hoped, and two, that it didn't savage it like a dog chewing on a bone.

In amongst the hiss and crackle, a monstrous 909 kick drum began to thud -- Daft Punk's Drive track had been rediscovered. Playing through was live Daft Punk: the freaky vocals, pounding Roland drums & synths and that distinctive DP compression. After standing in awed silence, witnessing this moment, the track faded off and we heard the sounds of French words that the recording had been made over; the remnants of their parents audio collection. The tape had originally been sent with Rollin' and Scratchin' to be released as Soma25 but Soma asked these two bright-eyed and techno-bound Frenchmen, to finish and send Da Funk instead and DRIVE was shelved for a later date. Until now.

It is our pleasure and honour to welcome Daft Punk back to Soma Records with this track from their past, and we see it as a fitting way to kick off our 20th anniversary compilation.

Arthur Russell's Dinosaur L Album Gets Reissued as Vinyl Box Set

Twenty years after its initial vinyl release, the late Arthur Russell's avant-disco album 24 -> 24 Music is being reissued as a deluxe four-LP box set. Serving as the sole full-length platter recorded under the Dinosaur L banner, the record flung together a haphazard and challenging blend of punk, funk and, occasionally, operatic vocals.

The mega-set is being presented by the Traffic Entertainment Group, who were responsible for the album's 2007 reissue. Sleeping Bag Records originally delivered the disc in 1981.

Similar to the original pressing, which featured hand-screened jackets, the new box will feature a screen job on its outer casing. Inside you'll find four twelve-inches, liner notes from Russell biographer and author of the disco history Love Saves the Day, Tim Lawrence, and a number of unreleased photographs by Janette Beckman. You can watch a clip of the box being prepared down below.

A tracklisting has yet to be revealed, so it's unclear which extra tracks may be paired with the original album's six tunes. Produced and directed by Russell, the Dinosaur L LP had him singing and playing cello, with accompaniment from longtime collaborators and friends Peter Gordon (saxophone) and Peter Zummo (trombone).

The 24 -> 24 Music deluxe box is available October 25 from Traffic Entertainment Group/Sleeping Bag.

UPDATE: Well, how awesome is this: Arthur Russell will be treated to another reissue this fall. On September 27, Audika Records will reissue his classic 1986 single "Let's Go Swimming," which will be remastered and come out on limited twelve-inch vinyl, CD and digitally. The re-release will include three versions of "Let's Go Swimming": Arthur's own mixes of the "Gulf Stream Dub" and "Puppy Surf Dub," and the legendary Coastal Dub remixed by Walter Gibbons.

It also features the previously unreleased 11-minute epic "Make 1, 2 (Gem Spa Dub)." Over here, you can see the reissue's new artwork, which was done by Russell's longtime partner Tom Lee. There's also a new video for Walter Gibbons for "Let's Go Swimming" that you can see at the bottom of the page.

This is the track listing from Traffic's one-sheet:

Meshell Ndegeocello back with new album ‘Weather’

Former Bay Area native Meshell Ndegeocello recently contributed a cover of U2’s “40” to Downtown Records’ “Raise Hope For Congo” anthology, as well as the Enough Project, dedicated to ending human genocide and war crimes, especially in Africa.

The blustery bassist also just wrapped a series of Prince-themed shows, wherein she reinterpreted Purple One classics both locally and around the world, including Paris. Is she retreating to her rustic upstate New York home for some well-earned R&R?

Nope.

She’s issuing a brand-new album, this time on Naïve, called “Weather” — a phenomenon she now experiences in all its East-Coast, seasonal glory.

Tracks like “Dirty World” are already up for auditing online. And this one marks a few interesting career turns for her. The suddenly omnipresent folk-rocker Joe Henry produced “Weather” (which hits the street Nov. 8) and guest-starred on it, and other curious cameos include Benji Hughes and ex-Ministry/Revolting Cocks noisemaker Chris Connelly. Ndgeocello even puts her own funky spin on Leonard Cohen’s definitive ode to Janis Joplin, “Chelsea Hotel,” this time around.

No tour dates are set yet, but check back here or at www.meshell.com.

“Brooklyn’s very own Madonna.” – New York Press

“Unabashedly slick electro-pop beats juxtaposed with coy, romantically depressed vocals courtesy of star-in-the-making Elizabeth Harper.” –New York Magazine (Cover Story) Brooklyn’s Sonic Boom – The 40 Songs That Define the Sound.

“[Harper's] passion proves to be the same kind of compelling counterweight to frosty sonics that helped make the music of her influences so memorable.” – Pitchfork (“Rising Artist”)

“sweetly spectral vocals over lush ’80s synths and beats.” – NYLON

“New York is no stranger to disco-influenced electro-pop, but there’s always room for another addition to the party….cool and collected vocal hooks from [Elizabeth] Harper’s sultry croon floating atop a straightforward dance beat rife with shimmering synths and bouncing basslines.” – XLR8R

“Any band that cites Madonna’s first album as a major influence is gonna get a listen from me…their super 80s vibe made the scene feel like the climax of a John Hughes movie, aka awesome. At the end of their short set, I had hearts in my eyes.”- BUST

King Krule / King Krule

Release Date: 8 Nov 2011

King Krule's (formerly Zoo Kid) second release brings with it, an expansion of vision, both musically and thematically. The connective tissue between these five tracks is still Marshall’s stark, direct lyrics, but over the span of the self-titled EP, there is an arresting sonic progression, as his songs open up to become a loose knit meditation and renewal of hope in the face of desperation. Shades of The Streets’ plainspoken and observant ramble dance with the heart on sleeve confessions of Billy Bragg. Archy’s influences are a patchwork for his voice to lay in, woven from several generations music as divergent as the 80s romantics, jazz, no wave and dub.

The first vocal track 'Bleak Bake', for instance, opens with levitating keyboards and Marshall clearing his throat, before sampled strings and 808 drum 'pooms' swoon in and he sighs. 'The Noose of Jah City' drives the knife in deeper -some of his most intoxicating incantations to date- with Marshall singing of being “suffocated in concrete” over a lushly upholstered backdrop of chiming guitars and shuffling sampled beats. While in the gorgeous 'Portrait in Black and Blue' he unleashes a bounding piece of classic croon. But even though the subject matter may at times be harrowing, the songs themselves are never anything less than exquisitely crafted, possessed of an almost spectral beauty, as epitomised in the shimmering instrumental intro “363N63”. Taken as a whole, the “King Krule” EP is the sound of a young man growing up and attempting to grapple with the realities of the world he inhabits, and a fascinating, brutal journey it is too.

Amy Winehouse - Lioness: Hidden Treasures

Today it’s been announced that on the 5th December, “Lioness: Hidden Treasures“, the third album from Amy Winehouse, without question one of the most talented, original, and best loved artists to emerge in popular music for decades, will be released through Island Records.
Following her tragic passing in July, some of the producers and musicians who worked closely with Amy Winehouse, among them Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, spent time listening over the many recordings that Amy had made, before, during, and after the release of “Frank” and “Back To Black”. It was said by all who worked with Amy that she never sang or played a song the same way twice. It quickly became apparent to Salaam and Mark that they had a collection of songs that deserved to be heard, a collection of songs that were a fitting testament to Amy the artist and, as importantly, Amy their friend.

The 12 track collection features previously unreleased tracks, alternate versions of existing classics as well as a couple of brand new Amy compositions, and has been compiled by long-time musical partners Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson in close association with Amy’s family, management and record label Island Records. “Lioness : Hidden Treasures” proves a fitting tribute to the artist, the talent and the woman and serves as a reminder of Amy’s extraordinary powers as a songwriter, a singer and an interpreter of classics.

The full tracklisting is as follows:

“Our Day Will Come (Reggae Version)” – reggae re-working of classic 60’s doo wop song produced by Salaam Remi. Recorded May 2002.

“Between The Cheats” – new Amy composition recorded in London in May 2008 for potential inclusion on album three produced by Salaam Remi.

“Tears Dry” – originally written by Amy as a ballad, this is the original version she recorded in November 2005 in Miami with Salaam. The later uptempo version appears on “Back To Black”.

“Wake Up Alone” – the first song recorded for the “Back To Black” sessions. This is the one-take demo recorded in March 2006 by Paul O’Duffy.

“Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” – Amy’s beautiful reading of the Carole King written Shirelles classic. Produced by Mark Ronson and featuring the Dap Kings with string arrangements by Chris Elliott who did all the strings for Mark’s tracks on “Back To Black”. Recorded in September 2004.

“Valerie” - one of Amy’s jukebox favourites. This is the original slower tempo version of the Mark Ronson produced post “Back To Black” single. Recorded in December 2006.

“Like Smoke” featuring NAS – Amy and Nas became really good friends after Amy name checked the New York rapper on “Back To Black’s” “Me & Mr Jones”. “Like Smoke” is finally Amy doing a song with one of her favourite artists. Produced by Salaam Remi. Recorded in May 2008.

“The Girl From Ipanema” – the first song the 18 year old Amy sang when she first went to Miami to record with Salaam. Salaam remarked that “the way she re-interpreted this bossa nova classic made me realise that I was dealing with a very special talent. Her approach to the song was so young and fresh, it really inspired the rest of our sessions.” Recorded in May 2002.

“Halftime” - Amy had talked to Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson of the Roots about working together. “Halftime” is a song that Amy and Salaam had worked on since the Frank sessions. The result is beautiful. Recorded in August 2002.

“Best Friends” – “Frank” era live set opener produced by Salaam Remi. Probably the first song that early Amy fans would have heard live. Recorded in February 2003.

“Body & Soul” with Tony Bennett - cover of 30’s jazz standard with hero Tony Bennett. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios London in March 2011 and produced by Phil Ramone. Amy’s final studio recording.

“A Song For You” - heartbreaking and emotional version of the Leon Russell classic made famous by Donny Hathaway. Hathaway was Amy’s all-time favourite artist and the song was recorded in one take, just Amy and her guitar, at her home in London during the spring of 2009 as she battled her demons. Produced by Salaam Remi.
