2014 MLB thread

I didn't really consider the Royals as contenders but have become a fan with their style of play. Cain and Aoki have made sparkling plays on defense. When the umpire says "play ball!", wallet size no longer matters. Maybe the last-place $Phillies$ will soon figure that out. :##:

The Phillies and the Yanks have done t hemselves in by giving too many long term contracts to players on the wrong side of 30.

As a yankee fan, I completely agree. They need to develop the talent and stop throwing money at guys that cant help us win.

The issue is that we have to rebuild. Something the brass doesn't want.

They need Tanaka to not break down again and Pineda to show consistency and health. God knows what they'll get from CC. On the field who knows what A Roid has left in the tank and can Beltran come back healthy from his elbow spurs and Mark Teixeira...is he now truly just an injury prone shell of a player at only 35? So many question marks.... they'll miss Derek Jeter's professionalism but he wasn't all that good last year either. When of all your players the one who really did the most for the money was Brett Gardner..who still despite his 17 homers and decent doubles production wound up batting only .260 but for most of the year was your most dependable player other than the solid but overpaid Jacoby Ellsbury...things look pretty dicey. And while there are a few farm positives the depth of the Yankees minor leagues for future additions or strong trade chips isn't that good.

Congrats to the St. Louis Cards and the San Francisco Giants advancing to the NLCS after consecutive game 4 eliminations of the Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Dodgers.

I know... I'm glad I was around for the Yankee dynasty because we won't be in action for a while again.

I wish George Steinbrenner was still alive. He would not have let this shit happen. His son is to focused on the money aspect. Needs to be more like dad and say fuck the world. We need the evil empire back.

George made a lot of mistakes as well. The Yankee Dynasty was made possible because he was suspended and thus the people who knew what they were doing took over.

Yep, Ninja...George was a big spender and he did have great initial success with free agent splurgings but his constant interference and headline seeking, managing and roster changes did more harm than good a lot of the time. It was the period he was suspended in the mid 1990's that allowed some stability with Gene Michael and young Brian Cashman and once he returned George was mellower and interfered less outrageously, though he would still at times have some battles. Despite the mainly home grown/smart trade route the 1996-2000 Yankees were made up of, the superstars still appealed to George and we wound up with Randy Johnson(mixed results), Roger Clemens (looked successful but turned out steroid aided), Jason Giambi( broke down some after a couple of years, steroids aided) and Alex Rodriguez(we know how that's turned out, lol). Though we did get Hideki Matsui from Japan(very consistent) also gotta remember Hideki Irabu(aka "The Fat Toad"). The success of the Yankees from the time they got back into the playoffs in 1995 after 13 years of getting shut out was mainly because of others(including Buck Showalter and Joe Torre, who credit to Steinbrenner he did hire), the work of Gene Michael who was succeeded by Brian Cashman. Now the Yankees are being screwed with budget flexibility by the ridiculous contracts of Mark Teixeira(two more years to go), Alex Rodriguez (3 more) CC Sabathia (3 more), Brian Mc Cann (four more years) and the inexplicably generous Jacoby Ellsbury one(seven more years)and two more years of Carlos Beltran.

Yankees are making the mistakes of the 80's all over again with the deals they've made. The fact we don't have a farm system doesn't help either.

The only question for the O's now will be what game will they get finished off in.
As for the Cards and Giants, the pitcher yesterday may have just thrown away the series for the GIants.

Good grief, a bad throw by Cards reliever Randy Choate on Giants bunt allowed Crawford to score the winning run in the 10th inning giving the Giants the win, a walk off win on an error I thought only The Mets did that kind of stuff.

Very sad indeed; not supposed to happen in major league playoffs

I have to say, I don't know if I will watch the World Series this year.
Because I don't feel like I'm watching the two best teams in baseball, I feel like I'm watching two teams that got hot at the right time while teams with better records ended up going home.
The regular season is starting to become pointless in a way, it truly is.

I have to say that I semi-agree with you. KC and the Giants didnt win 90 games this year but their play this postseason shows that when it comes to the playoffs, its a blank slate. Regular season numbers mean nothing. Ill definitely watch cuz i think kc has been the most exciting team this postseason and i would love to see them win.

I'm roorting for KC as well. I'm tired of the Giants getting hot at the right time and winning.

Yeah I agree not the most exciting teams for the games for me either, with the Mets not anywhere near it I had hoped to see the Dodgers get in; now that would have been sweet and they came close just as they did last year but in the end came up short.

The World Series will have some spark coming from the telecasts this year cause you may recall I told you when Kevin Burkhardt joined FOX Sports for football he will also be a part of World Series telecasts as well.
So tonight will be KBs first time anchoring Fox's pregame and postgame coverage along with Nick Swisher, Gabe Kapler and Frank Thomas with David Ortiz joining in on some of the games. I know he will be great and won’t it be fun to hear his golden voice talking baseball again. He left for Kansa City Sunday for what is his first visit to that ballpark and lemme tell ya he is pumped. Kev has family in the area as well and is looking forward to catching up with them. As usual Joe Buck calls play-by-play along with Harold Reynolds and Tom Verducci this will be the first time calling the World Series for Harold and Tom. I am a big fan of Reynolds having the pleasure of meeting him and talkin some baseball with him.

The series is tied 1-1.
I'm rooting for Kansas City all the way on this one.

I knew KC had a fantastic bullpen but never thought they would be this consistent throughout the playoffs. KC 2-1.

Be nice to see KC get the two more wins it needs to win the WS for the first time since 1985. George Brett never gave up on his lifelong organization despite it being in a small market compared even to its NL rival St. Louis Cardinals, and very rarely in any serious competitive position since the latter part of his career there. That would be the sweetest thing... and another shot at clubs who think the only way to win is very long term megacontracts to "superstar" players. It's nice to have, but what you need most are good, solid players, good team chemistry and basically play fundamentals, and have a bullpen that can hold leads.

Looks like SF is about to get their third World Series title since 2010.. bleh.

I'm glad for San Francisco. The wild card is there for a purpose and they were the ones along with Kansa City who took advantage of it. The model they have is probably a better bet than the loaded superstars roster model...sorry, Players Association.. fat contracts are only good for players and agents wallets, but not necessary to building a winning formula at all. If it's a low rated World Series, shame on baseball fans. I was so happy for the Giants players and Madison Bumgarner going five innings in relief getting the win after two spectacular starts did a pitching tour de force for the ages. Kansas City gave as good as it got going seven games for this to be decided, something in the last quarter century has happened 8 times. We got a competitive, thrilling WS and I congratulate the San Francisco Giants on a wonderful year, and who can say they didn't get a kick out of Pedro Sandoval's getting the last out? What a fun player, inspiring and a post season dynamo!

And thanks to the KC Royals for a thrilling ride returning to the WS stage 29 years after their 1985 triumph against the Cardinals. We're too spoiled here in the New York area, expecting big names and big money to dominate the stage and there are some really good players on the Giants especially who make good money. More importantly though they have balance and chemistry, which clubs going for the rings like the Dodgers, Angels, Tigers, Yankees through checkbook baseball should ponder.
