In New Zealand, we're in the post 2nd shot phase. Our cases per day have about halved, and people are starting to get boosters. Our vaccines are almost exclusively Pfizer.

We are bracing for Omicron, but are managing to keep it out at the border so far. 5 cases of Omicrom caught at the border today. These cases are isolated and go into a managed quarantine facility. Delta eventually breached our defences, and I expect Omicrom will do the same sooner or later. Over 90% of the eligible population have now had 2 shots or pfizer.

I just got called a fucking idiot with spit leaking from my brain by a former U.S. Army doctor who says a vaccine has to contain DNA from the virus in order to work at all, and who said I was stupid for believing that proteins have anything to do with it. He's running his mouth off online with this crap, saying masks have no effect and that since the "so-called" vaccine doesn't make the recipient totally protected against the virus it's actually dangerous to get the virus.

They are truly "normal people", the good old experts: the world IS what they have experienced, and their "experience" is what informs the universe.
I recall an "art expert" trashing the restoration of the Sistine Chapel, and complaining that only people "with no experience" in art matters would give their approval to that disaster. The sort of well-informed academic who would publish volumes stating that Cervantes could not possibly have written the Quixote because he was not cultivated enough. Those people have always been there, what do you think made me the way I am, a natural evil disposition?

All that sounds pretty much like Spain, but I am surprised a place like NZ got as much as FIVE cases in one single day, even "at the border", and even if we consider that to count as one single case by making it a single group: barely seven or ten years ago, one could count omicron cases in the different regions of Spain with the fingers in one ear, and now people have finally started cancelling Christmas parties, and the government has summoned an emergency meeting with the governors of all the regions.
The booster has been approved for the over-40, while the kids have finally started to get their "one-third" doses, and people are now queuing up for their first or second shots, while during the summer vaccines had to be thrown away because nobody seemed to want or need them anymore.

Last week, Saturday Night Live announced that it would doing its show without a live audience out of caution over increasing omicron cases in NYC. In November, NYC had been running about 900 new cases per day. This week, NYC reached 9,000 cases per day.

The cast worked on completing a filmed segment for the show late Friday night. Before the show went up at 11PM, it was announced that the show would go on without most of the cast and crew. The rumor is that 4 members of the cast tested positive for COVID-19 and that 3 members of the cast called in sick. Weekend Update was done without Colin Jost (which hints at who one of the 4 COVID-positive cast members might be).

Keenan Thompson and Michael Che were the only cast member who were on the show in person.

The musical guest was told she could not perform after she was possibly exposed during rehearsals this week.

All things considered- and compared to The Diamond Princess experience (712 cases/3,711 people onboard and at least 14 deaths)- this is a success story.

48 test positive for Covid on world's biggest cruise ship [CNN]

Despite stringent measures supposed to keep ocean cruises Covid-free, operator Royal Caribbean says at least 48 people on board one of its ships that docked in Miami at the weekend have tested positive for the virus...

The Symphony of the Seas  was carrying 6,091 passengers and crew members. In a statement, Royal Caribbean said that a guest tested positive during the voyage, and subsequent cases were detected following contact tracing.

It said 95% on board were fully vaccinated. Of the people who've since tested positive, 98% were fully vaccinated. The total number of cases amounted to 0.78% of the on board population.

Royal Caribbean says it also implements additional health and safety measures, such as enhanced cleaning. On US-based cruises, masks are now required to be worn in indoor public areas -- this policy was recently updated to extend mask-wearing requirements for fully vaccinated passengers.

"Each person quickly went into quarantine," reads a Royal Caribbean statement on the Symphony of the Seas outbreak. "Everyone who tested positive were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, and we continuously monitored their health."
