I don't think its as big a deal as the media is playing it. Are you worried?

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

Of course you wouldn't.

Unless one of your crackpot sites told you that it was a huge conspiracy to make it look like it wasn't serious.

Tell you what.

Fly to the area it is epidemic in and then let us know if we should worry.

I understand that the Chinese government is creating a 1000 bed hospital to deal with the outbreak.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

I"m definitely paying attention -- and hoping that the quarentines work. I don't think that the actual illness is too horrible -- but, hope that there is no worldwide epidemic.

Hi guys!!!

:):):)

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

Yeah buying the hype, even one person gone is too much.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

It's not that big a deal RIGHT NOW in the U.S. and Canada. It is a big deal in China and it has the potential to be pandemic. I will get the vaccine if and when they develop one. Will YOU?

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

It's only a matter of time before a new highly contagious virus spreads rapidly around the globe and wipes out millions of people.

This might well be the one.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

While the news media likes to play "the sky is falling" and stir the pot, it is usually based upon an actual event. I doubt that China's Communist government would allow posing for fake pictures of a non event so I believe that there is a problem that could spread world wide given all of the travel to and from China.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

My neighbor is returning from Wuhan today. The flight from Chicago is apparently populated by entirely by N95 mask wearing escapees from the quarantine. I need not mention that I did not offer to pick him up from the airport.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

Yes, I believe that it is serious. Not yet in the U.S., but it could spread fast under the right conditions.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

I am concerned, because if health officials do not stay on top of this thing, it will get much worse. Even with the best efforts, I still think it will take thousands of lives worldwide, just like influenza.

Mikey.......if you're so comfortable with it you're free to check it out first hand.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

Hmmmmmmmmmm...

I'm scheduled to attend a large trade show next week (Wednesday-Friday) in Denver where there will be a great number of vendors from China.

I'm considering not going but will assess on Wednesday.

Don't accept any free blankets.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

there are now 2 confirmed cases in the States - one yesterday in Chicago and one this morning in Seattle

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

Having been involved in the epi-centre of the SARS crisis in Toronto in 2003, and seeing it literally close down one entire hospital because of quarantine, I would recommend that people not treat Coronavirus casually.

Something that has gotten lost in the hype which explains why everyone should be concerned: MERS and SARS are coronaviruses that were difficult to pass from human to human. The majority of the early cases of MERS and SARS were passed from the animal host (e.g. camels, civet cats, et al) to humans. SARS had a low human to human transmission factor which is why it died out quickly once isolation and quarantine measures were put in place.

The Wuhan virus has been confirmed to pass from human to human and it seems to have a higher transmission factor which is why it's showing up in so many areas of east Asia, Europe and North America. That's a significant difference. It also puts healthcare workers in the high risk pool.

Fortunately the mortality rate seems to be about the same between Wuhan and SARS- about 10% of the people who contract the virus will die from their illness.
