On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

Cases reported: 392,331
Are the people who are now ''cured'' say in January still counted in here and why are they not dropped off the list ??

Updates from those in "queerantine":

Andy Cohen has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Greg Rikaart has been diagnosed with COVID-19. The post that announces it has an image of a child so I can't link to it directly.

Nyle DiMarco has been ill and suspects that he also has COVID-19.

Daniel Newman recently returned from Mardi Gras in Sydney where someone in his group contracted coronavirus. He is sick but wasn't tested, so he's not sure he has coronavirus.

Sam Smith performed in Australia for Mardi Gras Pride. He's in quarantine.

West Hollywood Mayor John D'Amico Tests Positive for COVID-19 [Advocate]
West Hollywood Mayor John D’Amico has tested positive for COVID-19, and is currently self-isolating in his home for up to two weeks.

According to reports, the well-respected mayor did not attend a city council meeting on Monday and instead participated over the phone, saying he wasn’t feeling well. Two days later, he announced he tested positive for COVID-19

Terrence McNally, Tony award-winning playwright, dies of coronavirus complications [CNN]
Acclaimed playwright Terrence McNally died Tuesday due to complications from the coronavirus. He was 81.

McNally, who last year received the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre, died in a hospital in Sarasota, Florida, according to his publicist, Matt Polk.

He was a lung cancer survivor and had a lung disease called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Polk said.

McNally won two Tony Awards for writing the books for the musicals "Ragtime" in 1998 and "Kiss of the Spider Woman" in 1993.

He won two more for his plays "Love! Valour! Compassion!" and "Master Class."

A new symptom is red "allergy eyes" being reported out of Washington state.

We’ve had patients that just had the red eyes as the only symptom that we saw and go to the hospital and pass away,” she said. “I’ve even had the disaster medical control physician say, ‘Do they have the red eyes?’ And I will say yes. And he’ll say, ‘I’ll find you a bed.’ It’s just something about this, the way that it affects these patients.”

''red eye'' means too late?
They pass way ...

No.

One of the problems with SARS-CoV-2 is that it doesn't cause the usual sniffles, sore throat and runny nose that most common cold viruses cause. It has unique symptoms.

Those symptoms in order of frequency are
  • Dry cough that sometimes comes with a pressure feeling in the chest.
  • High fevers- commonly over 102F (38.8C).
  • Headache.
  • Extreme fatigue.
Some people also report:
  • Loss of sense of taste and sense of smell.
  • Redness of the eyes.

None of these symptoms are predictive of severity or mortality. They are only useful in comparing symptoms of flu versus COVID-19.

It's not unusual for viruses to cause redness of the eyes. What is reported as being unusual with COVID-19 is that typically viruses cause redness of the whites of the eyes. With COVID-19, the redness seems to be described as being the edges of the eyelids.

Louisiana is beginning to confirm what we suspected- that the 1.2 million people who attended Mardi Gras in New Orleans provided a perfect crowd setting for a viral epidemic to spread.

Gov. Edwards: Mardi Gras caused many cases of coronavirus in New Orleans area [Fox8-NO]
Governor John Bel Edwards believes that Mardi Gras had a lot to do with the number of coronavirus cases in the New Orleans metro area.

The first confirmed case in the state of Louisiana who tested positive did so 13 days after Fat Tuesday and did so in the New Orleans area, and if you look at how long it takes from exposure and people becoming symptomatic that's the period of time that you are talking about between two and three weeks...

Edwards is warning that the New Orleans area could run out of hospital beds by April 4.

The Democratic governor’s request to President Donald Trump comes as the number of people in Louisiana confirmed to have COVID-19 surged to nearly 1,400 on Tuesday.

47610 infected, 3434 dead in Spain; 9937 and 516 in Catalonia, which is finally more like what one would have expected in relation with the cases in Madrid from the very beginning, and which must keep growing, and more than probably surpassing the number in Madrid.

New Orleans is quickly reaching a crisis point. They have 170 EMS employees. 94 (55%) have been exposed to coronavirus. 28 (16%) are in isolation at home because they are showing symptoms.

28 New Orleans EMS employees quarantined, 94 exposed to the coronavirus [WDSU-NO]
94 New Orleans EMS employees have been exposed to the coronavirus according to the NOEMS Task Force. However according to the CDC guidelines for healthcare providers, they can work if they're not showing symptoms, as long as they wear a mask and are monitored for fever and other symptoms.

28 EMS employees who are showing showing symptoms have been isolated at home. No employees have tested positive for coronavirus but numerous test results are pending.

There are a total of 170 employees.

New Zealand gone into lockdown for 4 weeks. Schools, shops closed. Everyone to stay in their home except to shop for food at the supermarket. There's going to be a lot of people that won't play by the rules unfortunately.

New Zealand had 47 new cases yesterday, bringing their total to 205 cases. They using a slightly different standard- they're reporting cases before there's a confirmation via testing. Hopefully the lockdown they put in yesterday (24-Mar) and their isolated geography will quickly bring down their case growth rate.

Soap kill viruses,
why not use washable masks ?
The current tie-on masks are a paper/cotton blend and are designed to be disposable. They should be changed between patients.

The masks that healthcare workers are using when patients have coronoavirus have high-filtration factors (N95 masks- they filter 95% of airborne particles). Water and oil damages the mask and would lower the 95% effective rate.

Cloth masks made out of fabric can be used for the public, particularly for people who have colds, flu. The goal with these masks is to block virus from the mouth and nose from getting into the air, particularly coughing and sneezing. They do not have to fit airtight around the face, so they can be washed and reused.

While we're on the subject of soap: For hands, soap does two things- it removes any virus and bacteria that have adhered to the skin which is why the handwashing instructions say to wet your hands first, apply soap and rub your hands together under running water for 20 seconds. Soap does damage the virus shell, so it kills the virus. If you are not in a place where you have access to soap and water (e.g. out in public), a hand sanitizer with >60% alcohol content can be used.
