On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

Anyone having mixed up the distinction I made between the usage of gloves intended to protect (intended, not effectively doing so) the employees from a corona contagion these days, and those usually having served to appear to protect customers from acquiring contaminated food, has not been paying attention to the process of reading.

Spain 72,248 infected, 5,690 dead, 213 of them in Barcelona.

Meanwhile in Canada. The cases keep increasing this week as we also move toward hitting the peak....with Quebec being the hardest hit. In other provinces, it looks like flattening the curve efforts are more successful at the moment.
Toronto has been something of a mystery. Ontario has reported only 994 cases. Toronto's proximity to Buffalo and Detroit makes them high risk. There are quite a few healthcare workers who live in Windsor and work at hospitals in Detroit.

Ontario has been recording their briefings. It's interesting that they are leaving the briefings to the public health professionals.

NY Times also compared the orderly way that Canada has addressed the COVID-19 crisis compared to the US.

Re: 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19)

...The Winter Party still happened in Miami as if nothing were happening in Florida, even though the mayor of Miami was at home in quarantine because he was exposed last weekend and has mild cold symptoms.

And of course... https://www.instagram.com/p/B9xmvymnzKg/
I am writing to let you know that on Saturday night (the 14th), I was informed that one of our Winter Party Festival (WPF) guests has tested positive for COVID-19 this last week. We are grateful to them for alerting us, particularly given that they were not experiencing symptoms during WPF. While we know there are many places people could have been exposed before and after Winter Party as this virus has developed, we wanted to make sure you have this information as soon as possible. The health and safety of anyone who participates in any Task Force event is of great

Followup: there were many anecdotal reports about attendees at the party coming down with a flu-like illness. This appears to be the first death of a Winter Party attendee from COVID-19:

‘Everybody Loved Him’: Man From North Miami Dies of Coronavirus [NBC Miami]
A man from North Miami was tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Sunday. Days later, on Thursday, he passed away.

Israel Carrera, 40, is the first person to die of COVID-19 in Miami-Dade County.

Carrera's boyfriend, Franco Conquista, told NBC 6 on Friday that Carrera was a hard worker who put in 13-hour days to support his family.

In interviews, Consquista said that he and Carrera got sick about 3 days after attending the Winter Party. Carrera developed "breathing problems" and died in a Miami hospital 9 days later.

We're now gone in to full luckdown here. Nobody ever thought churches and pubs would be closed in Ireland!! Now, no travelling more than 2km from your home unless for food, fuel, medicine or caring for the elderly. The rural areas are fine, but our big Cities (and our Cities are tiny in comparison to other countries) like Dublin, Cork and Limerick are being slowly cannablised by this bastard virus from China.

Ireland had hit the same upward slope pattern that other countries fall into before lockdown is put in place. :(

On Feb 4, Canada sent 16 tonnes of supplies to China through the Red Cross to help them try to contain the spread.

In recent days, some angry xenophobes have been making an issue out of this.

In the meantime, China has been sending out equipment and Doctors to different countries to help them cope with their outbreaks as China brings its caseload under control.

This also includes the Chinese repaying Canada for our help in early February.

United States updates:
  • NYPD has 500 employees who have tested positive. In Boston, over 150 healthcare workers at 4 hospitals have tested positive.

New York City police lost its first detective to Covid-19, marking the third NYPD death to the disease that has afflicted the department.

Detective Cedric Dickson, a 23-year veteran, worked in the 32nd Precinct in Harlem, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said...

On Friday, 4,122 NYPD employees were out sick, a senior NYPD official said. That's about 11% of the department's workforce.

At least 442 uniformed NYPD members and 70 civilian members have tested positive for coronavirus, the official said.

I feel bad for us, for our failures, and for the horrors the developed world is facing. But we do not have to face the worst. There are yet unseen magnitudes of suffering for the world to witness.

This is currently the scene at a bus station in New Delhi. Although the government locked down all 1.3 billion, these are poor people who work in the big city trying to get on buses returning to their rural villages. Some of it is fear of staying in place, but a lot of it is simply that without work they cannot sustain a life in the city. Starts at ten second mark.

Someone didn't get the memo about physical distancing.

India was reporting only 933 cases this morning. This over-crowding will probably change that.

Social distancing in India? I've never seen it. And it is the poorest, of course, who will die the most. I can see corpses in the street. More of the same: https://imgur.com/OKofwZA

Nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital Dies From Coronavirus [NBC6-Miami]
Jackson Health confirmed Saturday that a nurse who worked at Jackson Memorial Hospital died from complications of COVID-19.

“Our Jackson Health System family is mourning the death of longtime Jackson nurse Araceli Buendia Ilagan, who recently died from complications of COVID-19," a statement from Jackson Health read.

"Araceli dedicated nearly 33 years of her life treating some of our most critically ill patients. During her long and storied career, she also mentored and trained other nurses, and was a champion for the profession."

2 points. Firstly I think Germany's low death rate is put down to testing. From the beginning they've been testing serious and mild cases. So theyre going to have reported far more cases in their stats. Countries like Italy and Iran are only testing seriously ill patients. I expect NZs death rate stats will also be low because we are doing a lot of testing and also reporting suspected cases in our stats, even if the test is negative. Secondly I'm wondering if it's a given that the virus will take off in India. They're a tropical country and so far tropical countries and been spared huge outbreaks. Time will tell.

Should everyone copy Taiwan ?
This is shocking and amazing at the same time. Amazing how Taiwan do things with covid19 and shocking how Australia do it:

The very low case count in India: How hard is it for people to get tested?

If almost nobody can get tested, of course the case count will be low.

It's a tinderbox. They have a shortage of testing kits and their "quarantine centers" are filthy. They just put in a 21 day stay at home order, which hints that they know that they have far more cases than they have publicly reported.
