The US has hit the highest one day death total of any country.

And another example of how incredibly contagious this virus is: there's another small cruise ship that is requiring evacuation.

Passengers to be evacuated from Antarctic cruise ship after almost 60% test positive for coronavirus [CNN]
Australian and New Zealand passengers will be evacuated from a stricken Antarctic cruise ship Thursday, after almost 60% of those on board tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Greg Mortimer, a cruise liner operated by Australia's Aurora Expeditions, departed March 15 on a voyage to Antarctica and South Georgia. Since the beginning of April, however, the ship has been stuck off the coast of Uruguay, after authorities refused to allow passengers to disembark due to the risk of coronavirus.

Of the 217 people on board, 128 passengers and crew have now tested positive for the virus.

The death count in New York City has now surpassed the death count from 9/11.

I'm not seeing the same outrage.

The death count in New York City has now surpassed the death count from 9/11.

I'm not seeing the same outrage.

Remember how shocked we were at the number of cases in Spain and Italy?

Something to think about: If New York were a country, it would be #2 on the list of countries with the most confirmed cases, second only to Spain. If New Jersey were a country it would be around #8 or #9 on the list.

  • Spain - 146,690 (up from 140,510 / 4.4%) - 14,555 deaths
  • Italy - 135,586 cases (up 132,547 / 2.3%) - 17,127 deaths
  • New York - 140,386 (up from 131,830 / 6.5%) - 5,489 deaths
  • New Jersey - 44,416 (up from 41,090 / 8.1%) - 1,232 deaths

New York's death rate is still lower than Spain or Italy and they did benefit from lessons learned from Spain and Italy. The only reason that New York won't reach the death statistics in Spain and Italy is that both countries have high numbers of people dying - in Spain the death count yesterday was 757 people and in Italy was 604 people.

Wondering who first came up with ''Social distancing'' or who design the idea ?
He or She should win some sort of award.

Our biggest challenge continues to be Quebec where the peak point does not appear to have been reached yet.

This has consequences for Ontario and the Atlantic provinces.

Our biggest challenge continues to be Quebec where the peak point does not appear to have been reached yet.

Friends in Montreal have been posting quarantine pictures since last week, so it looks like Quebec does have a stay at home order, but if I'm reading the story below, they are only planning to keep that order until 30-Apr?

medical experts state that a vaccine won't be ready and readily available for another 2 to 3 years

But the BCG vaccine is on-the-shelf and proven safe. I don't know why this isn't getting the publicity that it should and why can't it be used until a more targeted vaccine is ready?

One assumes that today, the US will pass the 500,000 case mark, with about the same number of cases per million as Germany.

So much for having the country re-opened by Easter.

I don't believe NY mass burials are anything unusual, but lots of people are reporting it as though it's a shocking new covid-related horror. It seems probable that mass burial sites like the one in the picture will receive more use during the pandemic, but it's not out of the ordinary.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/05/15/nyregion/new-york-mass-graves-hart-island.html

New York is unique among American cities in the way it disposes of the dead it considers unclaimed: interment on a lonely island, off-limits to the public, by a crew of inmates. Buried by the score in wide, deep pits, the Hart Island dead seem to vanish — and so does any explanation for how they came to be there
