On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

Canada is seeing a spike in cases yesterday with 668 new cases reported, 311 in Quebec and 257 in Ontario.

Again, the majority are agricultural workers in Ontario identified through more aggressive testing in the Windsor Essex area....but also a number of cases from a nail salon in Kingston.

“After extensive testing this weekend of temporary workers in Southwestern Ontario, the province is reporting 177 new cases of COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex, with another 80 new cases across the rest of the province,” the minister said in a statement.

“Following some initial challenges with testing in the agriculture and agri-food sectors, these numbers reflect the implementation of our three-point plan to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 on farms.”

For Quebec, the spike is likely due to a short period since Thursday where there was a decision not to report daily numbers...which they have now backtracked on.

Unfortunately our Governor here in FL is more interested in gloating about keeping our economy on track on twitter then doing anything about the Pandemic.

And the news is dire.

Fauci says that the US could hit 100,000 new cases a day which will absolutely swamp the country's medical system.

I am so goddamned angry about this. I feel so incredibly bad for all the medical and other front line workers who are beyond exhausted at this point.

It. Did. Not. Have. To. Be. Like. This.

Ditto.

It's even more embarrassing that the country that usually has the top tier treatments for illnesses is in joined in the list by 3rd world countries that did not have the resources to deal with a pandemic. The US had the ability to contain the epidemic but through a combination of our failing political system and a group of science-deniers that have too much influence, we are in a mess.

One only has to look at Pence's "Faith In America" tour photos and protest rally photos to know that the public still doesn't get it.

The speed that COVID-19 is spreading in States that are trying to re-open is absolutely horrifying.
California needs to impose restrictions immediately. The rise in new cases means this event is nowhere near over.

I am unfortunately not surprised that this got worse than it needed to be with our current Government at State and Federal level. And the fact that apparently they thought the virus would adhere to an arbitrary time frame. They lead everyone to believe that things were going to go back to normal just because they said so and started opening things up again prematurely. I feel like I should be angrier about this, but honesty with all that is going on in my own Country, my emotions are running on fucking fumes.

Going back to the early days of this thread....I noted that it wouldn't be necessarily about the number of deaths...it would be about the choking of the health care system. It has happened in many countries so far as COVID got away from them. And now it is happening in Texas and Arizona as decisions are having to be made about who will get the resources to treat their case.

And it is also about the longer term damage for those who recover.

Another article on the toll this is taking:

"Stroke, delirium, anxiety, confusion, fatigue - the list goes on. If you think Covid-19 is just a respiratory disease, think again."

Wear the mask. Tell everyone else to wear the mask.

It has been 10 days since I went to a funeral in North Carolina. Yesterday I received a call from my cousin that I was staying with and she has been diagnosis with covid. I do not have any symptoms and it will 14 days on Sunday.

Because you've had an exposure, you meet criteria for testing. The drive-through testing site at the convention center accepts patients without a referral and without symptoms.

If you're 10 days out and you are showing no symptoms, it lowers the probability that you contracted the virus. Most people who contract the virus usually show symptoms within 4-7 days.

If you don't want to deal with the lines for antigen testing, you can ask for an antibody test to be drawn with your routine lab for your next doctor's visit.

I am checking my temp daily and it has been around 97 which is normal for me. I call my local hospital which is doing testing and they say that if I show any of the signs come in but they think I am OK at this time. I am able to do my daily walk without any breathing issues.

The news is reporting that the US hit a new one day total of more than 50,000 new cases yesterday.

Yikes.

Because of how this was handled (or lack or handling rather), this is going to into next year most definitely.

When Fauci warned that it could reach 100,000 cases per day...he likely wasn't joking.

Good thing that the US purchased the entire world supply of Remdesivir this week in an 'America First' Fuck You to the rest of us....looks like Americans may need all of it.

When Fauci warned that it could reach 100,000 cases per day...he likely wasn't joking.

The is US half-way there. The new case number for yesterday for the US is 49,908.

Here's the top 10 States for yesterday with their total cases and (+new cases):
  1. Florida: 169,106 (+10,109)
  2. Texas: 172,486 (+9,426)
  3. California: 238,957 (+6,682)
  4. Arizona: 84,105 (+4,877)
  5. Georgia: 84,237 (+2,946)
  6. Louisiana: 60,178 (+2,083)
  7. Tennessee: 45,315 (+1,806)
  8. South Carolina: 37,919 (+1,520)
  9. North Carolina: 66,751 (+1,424)
  10. Alabama: 40,111 (+1,149)

Pause for a moment and consider that, in ONE DAY, Florida has more cases (10,109) than Australia has had in the the past 6 months (8,001).

Florida is going to be the next New York, only without the competent governor that New York has.

^This statistic is something that the President of Brazil should be convicted of murder over.

But the word from Brazil is that they have been underreporting cases and deaths. President Bolsonaro tried to stop the public health officials from collecting statistics but the Brazilian courts overruled him. Een through Brazil is reporting statistics, it has reached the point that the people are dying so fast that they're not able to get accurate counts.

In spite of the fact that over 1,000 people a day are dying and the country has still not hit their peak, Bolsonaro has denied the problem, tried to cover-up the issue, lied to the public about the crisis and he has blocked attempts to close down public spaces.

Coronavirus in Brazil: What You Need to Know [New York Times]
How did Brazil became a global epicenter of the outbreak, and what have been the political consequences for its president, who has dismissed the dangers?

Latin America became the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in late May, largely driven by Brazil’s ballooning caseload, as the number of infections in the United States and Europe fell.

In recent weeks, Brazil has reported upward of 1,000 new deaths a day from Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, eclipsing the death toll in every country other than the United States. On June 19, the country reported 54,771 new cases, the biggest one-day total for any country hit by the pandemic. If the trend lines hold, some epidemiologists project the death toll of the epidemic in Brazil could surpass that in the United States by late July.

The country’s response to the crisis has been widely criticized at home and abroad. President Jair Bolsonaro has dismissed the danger posed by the virus, sabotaged quarantine measures adopted at the state level and called on Brazilians to continue working to keep the economy from collapsing.

Even as the country’s coronavirus crisis worsened in recent weeks, some major cities eased preventive measures in mid-June. Shopping malls have begun to reopen in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Beaches are starting to draw crowds again, even as some hospital systems are close to running out of intensive care beds...

Mr. Bolsonaro’s cavalier response to the pandemic pitted him against governors and against officials at the Ministry of Health, who were urging people to stay home to the extent possible. Two health ministers left after clashes with Mr. Bolsonaro, one fired and one quitting, leaving a military general with no public health training in charge of the response.
