On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

When first proposed there was opposition from businesses citing extra admin/labour costs (photo ID is also required, phone numbers must be recorded for contact tracing). Pub owners too were upset at the prospect of refusing entry to long-standing customers, particularly in rural areas where those customers would also be neighbours. But it all settled down when it was clear there were o options/alternatives available for re-opening businesses that had been closed for over 500 days.

Some objections from the public. Older persons who do not have smart phones, for example. This was remedied by allowing hard copy Vaccine Certs plus Photo ID. But objections have been relatively muted. Among the older age cohorts here, vaccine uptake has been <90%.

You have more rational people. Half the country here is brainwashed and insane.

I think there's a huge 'sense of Community effect' impact here. Teenagers have been accepting the vaccine not necessarily as they feel they need it for themselves as such, but rather out of fear of infecting older or vulnerable family members. Many have said so.

This weekend begins mrna vaccination of 12 to 15 year olds, and the same 'driver' at play.

On points raised in an earlier discussion, an interesting statistic released today. Of new cases detected (overwhelmingly Delta), 20% are fully vaccinated. However of those hospitalised, less than 5% are fully vaccinated. Not good news for the doubters!

For the -nth time, that's because you are not a country, you are a whole empire: the EU is not a proper nation, yet Western Europe have trouble with the Wild East, Slavic nations; besides, Ireland has a smaller population than Catalonia or the Madrid region, and with a far lower population density at that... even whole nations like Spain are relatively small and more homogeneous; then there is also a cultural thing, through which people tend to consider their own relationship with the rest of the universe out there, and are open to consider other interests than their own, rather than the egotist relationship of the rest of the universe with their particular castle and stem family that you may find in proudly and wrongly branded "individualistic" societies who, funnily enough, are the true herd people, pissed for being left out by those they call "sheep", led by "herd mentality".

That's it. Maybe that so-called "sheep" mentality of Ireland and Spain is actually related to "Christian sheep mentality"?
Or maybe they are just civilized people, instead of pioneer people fighting their will against Nature's, Destiny's and God's will

This whole covid crisis gives the first attention call to something I have been saying for years: vaccines have existed for over two hundred years, mass vaccination campaigns for several decades, yet there are people who always were taken for sensible, cultured, rational who are actually barbarians at the core, below the outer crusts of the last cultural fashions and technological devices.

Science and democracy, the "pillars" of modern Western civilization, are endangered by "enemy citizens", ready to erode that civilization from the inside.

The problem is that it is taken for granted that it's "the people" who have been ruled for decades or a couple of centuries, depending on the degree of power you consider, but the truth is that the order that we take for granted was always the work of the will of a ruling elite, the happy few: ever since "the people" ACTUALLY starting having a say, being listened to in their own terms, not in those they were fed with, the typical haughty ignorance of the "simple" people started destroying that "order" of which it had always been assumed that they were part, while they ACTUALLY are as barbarians to it as nations and people that were taken as the paradigm of "the enemy".

Oh, and also consider that the true great divide is not between rich and poor (rich people do hardly exist, they do not even reach 1% LOL), but between rural and urban areas, and that not meaning a divide between ignorant and enlightened but, running deeper than that, the reality that they are two totally different worlds with different interests, and not just because of the will of their respective populations, but deriving basically from their own fundamental nature, that, for example, that makes a spreading virus have a different impact in Manhattan and in Gretna (of whatever state you please).

With respect, I understood I was contributing to a discussion on the pandemic and related issues and not a political one. My earlier post was a response to two specific questions posed by another contributor.

Who are you to remind me for the 'nth time' that the Republic of Ireland is not a country? Your statement is as insulting as it is absurd. This country has its own constitution, elected parliament/government, and its own independent judicial system. We happen to be voluntarily part of a wider European Union which we joined by popular vote and are similarly free to leave by popular vote. Unlike other parts of the world (and indeed countries) we were not bombed, beaten or annexed into a Union against our will.

Further, who are you to suggest that the younger people coming forward for vaccination represents (or even suggests) 'sheep mentality, in circumstances where I stated the reason for same? You may call it sheep mentality, Christian values or whatever you wish. In circumstances where younger people are coming forward out of consideration/concern for older or vulnerable people, I prefer to refer to it as common human decency, and not 'sheep mentality'.

Finally, in relation to other points made earlier in the thread, I will point out that Eric Clapton was born and raised in Great Britain, and Van Morrison is Northern Ireland, not the Republic.

Well, if someone truly believes that this pandemic has not had anything to do with politics, and that the negationist movement is not primarily of political interest, for the negationists like for the rest, then, with all due respect, they are not understanding what this is all about; but, again, that would not be surprising news to me.

My earlier post was a response to two specific questions posed by another contributor.

And my response deals with what lies beneath all this pandemic, largely and wrongly ignored.

I was saying that as a response to city's post, not yours, and that assuming he is from the USA.

I guess you are perfectly entitled to mess up comments, adressees, intentions and what not, with your sloppy reading, no matter how clearly divided and indicated are the different quotes and respective comments.

Likewise, you are perfectly entitled to make up that I was calling people "sheep" and, what is more, specifically the young, while I was merely referring to, "quoting", the negationists who call us "sheep" for having received the anti-covid-19 vaccines, just like we received all the other ones decades ago.

Finally, in relation to other points made earlier in the thread, I will point out that Eric Clapton was born and raised in Great Britain, and Van Morrison is Northern Ireland, not the Republic.

Even if that is not addressed to me, I will take the opportunity to point out that Miguel Bosé was born in Panama, and he holds three more nationalities apart from the Spanish one.

I will stress the correct wording of my "this pandemic has to do basically with politics": the fact that it ever came to be, that is, that the virus was allowed to spread, is that no political leader, not even opposition ones, dared to treat a virus that it is always expected that will either be dealt with in China before the rest of the world has to worry about it (remember the SARS crisis back in 2003), or will stay in Africa to eat up as many people as it pleases, as a serious issue that would mess up voters' lives in the dashing, proud and prosperous Free World: politicians peddle fear of fancies than they can therefore make appear and disappear at their whim and interest, rather than solutions for problems that voters do not want to accept as actually existing and looming and threatening their well-being and peace of mind.

^ If you are not aware of any of that, you see, every day, how all your "expertise" and counseling goes directly down the drain for millions of people out there, because not all negationists go around parading, and some give in and follow the rules and even get vaccinated, only to the extent that it is of their own interest, waiting for the day they can "freely" mess up with the order they will not respect if it does not privilege or merely suits their particular interests or fancies.

Some Singaporeans prefer Sinovac Inactivated Virus vaccine VS mRNA Vaccine:

Another denier on a ventilator. Burke was Archbishop here in St. Louis from 2004 to 2008 and believe me, he is extremely hard-line. No mercy, no compassion, no caring, only condemnation and judgement; just follow the rules like a good Catholic. He denied the virus, refused vaccination and now he's on a ventilator. He challenged the virus and lost.

Cardinal Raymond Burke placed on ventilator after testing positive for COVID

In March 2020, just as the pandemic was unfolding in the United States, Cardinal Burke released a statement calling for churches and places of worship to remain open and seemed to imply COVID as a punishment of sorts.

Later in the year, the cardinal delivered a homily at a Wisconsin church promulgating a conspiracy theory that the virus was part of a plot “by certain forces, inimical to families and to the freedom of nations, to advance their evil agenda.”

On the other hand, I do not want this to come across like Catholic churches in general are like Burke or these crazy evangelical science-denying churches. Most parishes believe in science. This notice appears every week at my parish:

Following the mandate of the City of St. Louis, face coverings are required inside [Cityboy's Parish] for all people over age 5, regardless of vaccination status, so please wear a mask to Mass until further notice. We Catholics are unapologetically pro-life, and the most pro-life thing we can do right now is to be vaccinated. If you have not been vaccinated, please do so as soon as possible for your own health and safety, and to protect the most vulnerable among us. Let us continue to pray that God will bring hope and healing to our world!

When God sends you a lifeboat, get on it!

Cardinal Burke will be no loss.
