Well, today the elderly living under shady pines in Spain (at least in Catalonia, now that I think of it) started receiving their third jab.

92.5% of those above 70 received two doses, and around 80% of all oldfarters above 40 have received them too. Those between 12 and 29 are the ones lagging behind.

Apart from that, The Lancet publishes that one-third of the dead by or because of Covid-19 were diabetic.
 
A sobering statistic: the population of Alabama decreased last year because there were more deaths than births.

Such a gap had never been recorded, not even during World War I, World War II and the flu pandemic of 1918, Dr. Harris said. Going back to the earliest available records, in 1900, “We’ve never had a time when deaths exceeded births,” he said...

In Alabama last year, 7,182 deaths were officially attributed to Covid, according to data from the Alabama Department of Public Health.

In a highly anticipated announcement, Pfizer said on Monday a Phase 2/3 trial showed its Covid-19 vaccine was safe and generated a "robust" antibody response in children ages 5 to 11...

The trial included 2,268 participants ages 5 to 11 and used a two-dose regimen of the vaccine administered 21 days apart. This trials used a 10-microgram dose -- smaller than the 30-microgram dose that has been used for those 12 and older...

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a former FDA commissioner and current Pfizer board member, has said a vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 could be available by Halloween.

We're jabbing up here in New Zealand after a very slow start. 74% have now had their first dose. I expect it'll be close to 90% by the end of October. 39% 2 doses.

It's probably a measure of how Americans have lived in a bubble- that we have to go back 100 years to find a pandemic that killed so many people so quickly.

But a lot has happened since 1918- vaccines, antibiotics, high flow oxygen therapy, intensive care units, ECMO, positive pressure mechnical ventilators, CAVHD/dialysis- things that have lowered the mortality and morbidity in 2020-2021 but weren't available to people who had the 1918 flu. It's still shocking- that in spite of the vaccines and all the treatments we have in 2021, the chances of dying from COVID-19 are still around 2 per 100 cases of COVID-19.

Even more shocking, the overall death rate has been 1 per 500 Americans (667,000 deaths/330 million Americans) and it's still not over; 13,542 Americans died of COVID-19 last week and it's still going up week-to-week!

The 1918-1919 pandemic has a lot of parallels in human behavior. Americans were distracted by a World War. There was a lot of woeful ignorance in people refusing to change their behavior. There still is ignorance, in spite of all the knowledge that we've gained in 100 years.

No one seems to be acknowledging that we're living in two different Americas- one vaccinated, the other not vaccinated.
