from 6am today the majority of restrictions have been lifted. Mask wearing in retail, public transport and other indoor settings (cinemas, hair salons, theatres etc) remains mandatory. Restrictions 8n relation to pubs (capacity caps, table service only, early closing times) have been lifted. Also capacity caps for outdoor sports crowds also removed. Household visiting capacities also lifted.

I personally think its all a bit too much a bit too quickly

COVID wave. Wave goes past peak and drops by about one-half. Nearly all restrictions and protocols are dropped...LET'S PARTY LIKE IT'S 1999!

Meanwhile, the new variant BA.2, which is about 40-50% more contagious than the original omicron variant, is taking advantage of all the Danes who are out in the nightclubs. Nearly 100% of their COVID-19 infections are BA.2.

There was one day last week where 50,000 people - 1% of the entire population of the country- tested positive in a single day.

The good news is that over 80% of thei population is vaccinated and about 60% have received a booster. Their hospitalization and death rates are relatively low when taken as a percentage of cases. They had about 1,500 people in the hospital this week. They've had about 530 deaths in the past month.

Compare that to Florida (population 21.5 million) which has a 65% fully vaccinated rate with only 37% boosted. Florida had 131,699 cases and 1,324 deaths last week.

I got my hands on these awesome N99 respirator masks.

I don't care what they say. I do not see myself going mask-less for the foreseeable future. These masks have adjustable head straps so you can pull them tight and a gasket on the inside so they formfit firmly to your face and make a good seal. They are extremely comfortable and very easy to breath through. They were $1.00 a piece which I don't think is too bad. I don't want to sound like an advertisment, but I love them and had to post about them!

I went to the store yesterday maskless. I'd walked halfway there before I realized I'd forgotten to grab a mask and just kept going; I just didn't care. I realized the problem when on the way back I just crossed streets without bothering to look for traffic: my level of caring about life is next to zero since I lost Skylix (https://www.justusboys.com/forum/threads/495819-My-SKylix-is-gone). Felt the same way this morning when I woke up with a cough and just didn't care.

I need a new mask for going to the store anyway -- Skylix chewed one of the straps for the nice one I have and ruined the elastic. I should see if the pharmacy down the highway has those ones you show, though I've grown to like the colorful patterns on the triple-layer cloth ones I've been using.

I second that -- especially when I hear people walking along the sidewalk saying, "I'm not getting any shots -- I don't believe it's a vaccine" (that was just yesterday), or "It's a hoax, there's no virus. That's an excuse for something they're covering up".

I feel like walking up to these people and telling them they're dupes of a conspiracy to reduce the world's population by helping nurture new variants... like it would do any good!

Some comments on this weeks numbers:

• At 1,244,138 new cases, the US did not hold the #1 position in new cases. This is the first time that this has happened since July of last year when Brazil overtook the US in the number of new cases. Russia was #1 and Germany was #2 last week.
• The week of 15-Jan, the US had a record number of cases at 5,758,932 new cases that week. Unfortunately, those people who got sick in January are still dying: an average of 2,424 died every day last week. The US peaked the prior week at an average 2,616 people dying per day.
• The US is expected to hit 1,000,000 known deaths by this summer.
• The reason that cases are declining in the US is that with 77,707,694 people who have had COVID-19 and 251,926,344 people at least partially vaccinated, the majority of the population has immunity to the virus.
• New research is coming out that shows that antibody levels decline about 4 months after the boosters, so we may be due for another round of boosters, or if a variant develops that eludes the antibodies produced by the vaccines, we may need periodic boosters.

Heart-disease risk soars after COVID — even with a mild case [Nature]

Even a mild case of COVID-19 can increase a person’s risk of cardiovascular problems for at least a year after diagnosis, a new study1 shows. Researchers found that rates of many conditions, such as heart failure and stroke, were substantially higher in people who had recovered from COVID-19 than in similar people who hadn’t had the disease.

What’s more, the risk was elevated even for those who were under 65 years of age and lacked risk factors, such as obesity or diabetes.
