What is a rip-off is people who do not take responsibility for their own actions. I said it before and it has gone unnoticed. No one gets an abscessed tooth without years of dental hygiene neglect. Putting the story aside, as time goes on, the U.S. will continue to fall further and further behind other countries as long as we put $$$ above the welfare of citizens.
 
Sad story! It's ironic the US Govt is willing to spend trillions of US dollars on senseless wars yet it can't provide its own citizens access to affordable basic medical care.

If you can't afford doctors, go to an airport. You'll get a free x-ray, a free breast exam, and if you mention alqueda, you can get a free rectal exam and colonoscopy.

as to the young man who died .... so he went to the dentist .... had an abcess ... he was given prescriptions (presumably the correct ones) .... so the medical establishment did everything correct for him ..

he gets the pain Rx filled and not the antibiotic ... for whatever the reason.... doesn't matter

which states that ANYONE regardless of ability to pay MUST be treated ..... so when he became sicker for not choosing to fill the antibiotic Rx, why didn't he return for emergency treatment ... the illness spanned two weeks!

i have worked in health care (hospitals, private clinics, teaching, etc) for 41 years ... and i want everyone reading this to understand something ... EVERYONE IN THE US HAS (FREE IF NEED BE) ACCESS TO MEDICAL CARE .... please read that again ... anyone can walk into any hospital in the US and receive care ... regardless of the ability to pay

what everyone doesn't have (free) access to is PRIVATE care ... funded individually or by insurance (self purchased or provided by employer)

if that young man had presented to any of the MANY hospitals i have worked in 41 years .... he would have been treated

anyone who says otherwise just doesn't know what they are talking about ...

i'm really sorry for him and his family, but it was HIS OWN MISTAKES and poor judgment which caused his death
 
There is a lot of insensitivity in here. The young man didn't have a death wish. If he had known better, he would have done better. The professionals should have advised him better on what he needed to do.

I had a fall on Thursday and tore my skin under my chin. I have been letting it heal on its own, cleaning it several times a day. It is starting to heal but I'm thinking that I should probably get a couple stitches to hold it together closer. I'm curious to know if anyone knows roughly how much something like this might cost at an urgent care center? I don't know if it would be $500 or $50,000.

It will heal on its own but may leave a larger scar without stitches so I'm wondering if it would be worth it.

I have major medical insurance but it does not kick in until over $4.5k.

I can tell you that in 2009 I had 3 stitches (with no complications, X-rays, etc.) on my hand at a cost of $1200, at an ER; I don't know how much that would be at an urgent care center.

Thanks, I just got back. They told me that it was too late to get stitches. I would have needed to do it within the first 12 hours preferably, 24 hours is pushing it. 3 days is too long. So looks like I will have a scar under my chin.

They said it would cost around $200 to get stitches. The urgent care center sounds a lot cheaper to me.

Instead, they gave me a tetnus shot for $120 and it will last me 10 years.

Now I need to figure out if there is stuff I can do to minimize the scaring.

I'd wait till the scab falls off. Do not pick the scab. If there are no signs of infection, thorough cleaning of the wound may prevent a scab from forming. Anyway, while the scab is there, use Neosporin. Once the scab is gone use the scar cream.

But a lil scar on a man is sexy if I do say so myself. ;)

if it has been 3 or 4 days since your cut... you probably won't get anyone to put stitches in for you .... the risk of anerobic infection if the wound is closed is too great ... stitches need to be put in within the first few hours ... or at least the same 24 hour period

in order to stitch it safely would require debridement of the wound (cutting away the wound edges to expose new skin)

use triple antibiotic ointment (Neosporin) and some steri strips .. you can find them in various sizes and configurations to fit most any wound situation

thanks...that's pretty much what the urgent care center told me. I didn't realize that I had to go in so soon. I guess I have to just do my best to try and minimize the scaring. This is the first time in my life that I'm letting the hair on my face grow out. I can't shave that area right now so might as well give it a go for a few days.

THANK YOU! I always knew there was such a law, which I think I've sometimes heard referred to as the "anti-dumping law" where ER's can't just summarily dump somebody out of treatment on a whim. I've been very thankful that such a law exists!! Though I've never needed to "run for cover" under that law, I've been aware of it a long time and I've been long aware that it's the *ONLY* way that some people are able to get health care.

Those of you who think you should vote for Republicans, be careful about getting what you wish for. I've been saying for close to a year now that, if Republicans concentrate EVEN MORE power than what they currently have, I fully expect that they will try to repeal EMTALA. This is 100% my opinion and guesswork - note that I said it first, right here on JUB - I've *NEVER* heard such a thing being mentioned by anybody. Doing so would be so unspeakably CRUEL, to the point that they realize it's a political Third Rail in political campaigns, but I BETCHA this is a secret part of their agenda...JUST AS doing their best to make unions illegal, and to keep as many people from being able to vote as possible, was in their secret agenda, and they've since "hit it" BIGTIME in a number of states in 2011 alone.

If this happens, watch the life expectancy in the United States PLUMMET. It won't take long for more "enlightened" places like Sri Lanka, Moldova, Mexico, Egypt, etc. to equal or surpass U. S. lifespans.

How things have changed. In 1989 I had a knife accident where I sliced into a dime-sized flap of skin which was barely attached and hanging from my thumb, and it cost a little more than $200 for I think TEN stitches. In 1991, right during the middle of the Gulf War in January, I fractured my thumb (the same one!) by slamming it in a door, and the ER treatment - INCLUDING the X-ray, and the splint - cost, I think, $189 (in McAlester, Oklahoma).

More than likely the costs have increased enough since then, that merely putting in an extra zero wouldn't bring it quite up to current, for either of these. That was barely more than 20 years ago for both!!!
