8.9 Earthquake in Japan

I'm in Tokyo. The earthquake happened while I was at work. I ducked under a table and waited for the furious shaking to subside, all the while seeing electric poles sway from the window and the walls creak as the building shook. After what seemed an eternity, the shaking stopped and I had hoped that was that - but aftershocks came every twenty minutes or so, some quite powerful. The big quake was around 2:30 this afternoon; as I write this, it's 9:00 PM and we're still feeling aftershocks. The trains were stopped and the buses had queues of over 100 people (at least). You would've been lucky to find a cab there, too. I work near one of Tokyo's major stations, and it was thrice as packed as it usually is. I walked home from work - an hour of dodging people in the cold, crowds everywhere. The supermarkets were closed, and the 24-hour convenience stores completely sold out of food. Now I'm home, and can still feel the tremors.

MArtyj, stay safe! Form what I've read, it's the largest quake in Japan's history...be careful!

Oh my gosh!! (According to wiki,) 45+ people wiped from the earth, 40 gone missing! Soem of those 40 are probably suffering under crushing building remnants.

What can people who are not in Japan do to help calm the suffering of those people? (real) Psychic JUB members, please convene and advise me on what I can (try to) do. Not kidding or trying to be funny, so please don't laugh.

I've been tracking the tsunami across the Pacific. It passed through Midway Island 30 mins ago - due to hit Hawaii in an hour (which has already had nearly a dozen minor (2.3 - 4.5) earthquakes this morning connected to volcanic activity). The Philippines have got off relaitively 'scott free' due to them getting it 'end on' rather than 'broadside'. Therefore, due to the nature of the initial quake, Hawaii will be the benchmark for how serious a threat it may be to the Western seaboard!

Holy shit...the videos are just devastating, and the live feed of Hawaiian beaches is eerie with the reefs being exposed hundreds of feet out into the ocean.

Reports are showing between 200-300 bodies coming in from the ocean so far in Northern Japan. Crazy.

Wow the impact looks huge and the way the water just smacks about all the cars and boats etc makes all of man made accomplishments puny.

Is there no word on the death toll yet?

Glad you're safe.
Hopefully, we in the US will learn how we can offer aid soon.

I heard it this morning but only just seen it on the net, it looks awful, all that devastation. You folks who are near the coast on the other side of the Pacific, please find somewhere safe and high up, and the pacific islander, I do hope they won't be hit, there are some very low lying islands dotted all around...

Keep us informed martyj, and glad you're ok!

I glad you're safe Martyj.

I've heard how dependent Japan is on nuclear power and people had been evacuated from the zone around some nuclear plants. I live within the 10 radius of the US's 2nd largest nuclear plant so it's something that's always in the back of mind.

Wonder what Pat Robertson of the 700 Club will say is the cause of the quake. They are not after all a Christian Nation.

Since very few Japanese "have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior" it should be obvious to everyone that they're being punished for their infidelity. [-X

A few friends and my Aunt live near the Oregon Coast, and they said that they are evacuating most of the people from the Oregon Coast. Not just the people on the shore. Hopefully it is not as bad as they are predicting. Luckily I live in the Valley, but I hope that everyone who is on the Coast cities are able to stay safe. I also hope everyone else who is effected by this quake is able to stay safe. Stay safe, and good luck everybody.

I'm glad you're okay, martyj.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Japanese people as well as other affected by the quake in other countries.

It's so sad to hear news such as this. My heart is torn apart by all of the potential loss. All we can do for now is hope that those who have lost contact with their loved ones will be reunited as quickly as possible. It's fantastic to hear that your safe martyj. (*8*) This just goes to show that no matter how powerful mankind becomes, we are no match for the planet we call home. :(

This is simply tragic. I have been watching it on CNN all morning. I'm praying for everyone in Japan!

I was at the gym when the live clips were coming in. I found it really disturbing at some of the reactions. I saw a couple people that had big smiles on their faces as they were watching it, as if they were enjoying watching it happen. I will never be able to relate to those people.

BBC says the magnitude is 9
9 is 10 times more powerful than 8.9 true ?
