8.9 Earthquake in Japan

Godzilla's work :jab:

Now a nuclear power plant exploded :/

Got to give credit to the design engineers of many of the buildings!

It's been 47 hours since the big one struck and the past few days have been quite unrestful. Big aftershocks have occurred in the middle of the night that my tired body has slept through (thankfully), but have fueled the panic around Tokyo. Now, the reactor leaks have been the main news, and they say areas of the Kanto region (which houses Tokyo and Yokohama) and the Tohoku region will experience a power outage for a week. There are also more quakes / aftershocks predicted within the next three days; some say the shaking'll come here and there throughout the week. Fun times.

Meanwhile, outside the streets are oddly calm and empty. The sun is out and families are out for walks, some people still going into work, and the shopping district still visited by young consumers. The news outlets overseas seem to be making a huger deal of this than the Japanese media are, but it makes me wonder whether this isn't really THAT chaotic or if the Japanese government just wants to keep their people calm.

Sometimes, I marvel at the traditional Japanese art of pretending everything is okay during crises. It's times like these, however, that make you appreciate the life you have.

Thank you for the update. Please keep us posted. (*8*)

We all hope that your country is able to recover from this tragedy quickly. I realize that the biggest concern at the moment is that second nuclear plant which looks like it is going to go through a partial meltdown.

They deal every day with quakes that would make people suicidal in any other part of the world; they survived the WWII bombings, the first nuclear bombings on civil population and the total anihilation of their national pride, land, economy and traditional society; they got through Godzilla, the Lost Decade and they have also learnt to deal with prevailing pork-barrel politics, the hikikomori, the ganguro-yamanba-manba girls and to some extent even with Parisian people and Madrilian pickpockets when they are on a tour around Europe: this is just another straw.

All of us in the Pacific Rim, the Ring of Fire, could be in the same situation at any time.

Best wishes and prayers to all in Japan...

You mean FACING the same situation: that makes a whole world of a difference. Once it came upon you, you (we) could not be IN the same situation since we would need the same frame of mind to face it.

WTF do you mean?

If a 9.0 hit Oregon in the next ten minutes, I'd be "IN" the same situation, exactly. If not in Japan...

Not funny.

I live in the day to day realization that a major, historic earthquake could wipe out my city in minutes. It's real and possible.
We all have our impending landmark shit... I bet we will have some major catastrophe, whether Mom-Nate or man-induced, down here in BCN before you get anything coming from the St. Helens or the Juan de Fuca or whatever over there.

Bet all you want..

No one knows these things.

If I had my druthers, I'd wish destruction and ruin on your region before mine. :-)

You are a gay republican: I wouldn't be surprised that you are so self-destructive that it brims over and it makes you want to splash the rest of the world

I'm not a Republican, but a Libertarian.

You're just an asshole, it seems.... :-)

Yeah, yeah, yack-yack... "I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism."

An asshole with a man attached to it... not an asshole poser smiling in a ranch or in front of a teleprompter.
