In the land of the free, there's a lot which one is not free to say.

My point is that those who cried free speech for football players should do the same for Roseanne. However, both she and the players are
obligated under contract to behave in a manner that won't bring embarrassment to their employers.
What she said was dumb, you can't fix stupid.

Dofferent reasons for people criticizing the NFL and why her show got cancelled. So comparing the two doesn’t really work.

Conflating the consequences of a nakedly racist tweet with a gesture meant to draw attention to the innocent people being killed by police really doesn't work comfortably in this case.

No they shouldn't, [Text: Removed] protesting police brutality and calling black people apes fall under the same umbrella.

Re: ABC cancels "Roseanne" after star's racist tweet

No they shouldn't, only a tried and true bigot would think protesting police brutality and calling black people apes fall under the same umbrella.

Freedom of speech and expression is a large umbrella. Personally, I take issue with the NFL's decision. As uncomfortable as it is to see for some, players calling attention to police shootings is not wrong.

Now, I don't like Rosanne, I don't like what she said. The government can't stop her or the football players, but their employers can.

There is a huge sifference between the two. NFL didn’t even have players on the field for the National Anthem for a very long time until they were paid to do so. And they only instituted fines for players doing the kneeling just recently, so the Players before this new rule weren’t doing anything wrong. They were allowed to protest at the time. And actually they still are since they can not show up on the field until the Anthem is over if they so choose.

It is literally not the same thing.

Good luck convincing certain people that censoring racism and protesting racism aren't the same thing :rotflmao:

Re: ABC cancels "Roseanne" after star's racist tweet

The right to protest assholes and the right to be one are both protected, unless you are in a stadium owned by others or you have a TV show, your employer has the right to make rules in the work place or a forum can do the same.

Of course Roseanne and the players are not the same, however they are protected by the same Constitution.
https://www.aclu.org/issues/free-speech
Over the years, the ACLU has frequently represented or defended individuals engaged in some truly offensive speech. We have defended the speech rights of communists, Nazis, Ku Klux Klan members, accused terrorists, pornographers, anti-LGBT activists, and flag burners. That’s because the defense of freedom of speech is most necessary when the message is one most people find repulsive. Constitutional rights must apply to even the most unpopular groups if they’re going to be preserved for everyone.

Umm, read the thread title boo, what did you think this topic was about? :? I'm well aware of who the ACLU is, I've done volunteer work for them before on behalf of LGBTQRWULSKFHTBSPD, because equal rights isn't a color or orientation issue but one of human fucking decency. I like to spend my free time advocating for the liberty and happiness of others, rather than trying to prove through obfuscation and intellectual dishonesty why things are fine just the way they are.

Who here said employers aren’t allowed to make rules? Are you arguing for the sake or arguing?

You very first post in this thread was a blanket statement about freedom of speech sounding like someone who didn’t understand it himself. For someone’s world view that extends from the front to the back of his yard I wouldn’t be talking down to anyone.

What if their happiness is hanging a Confederate flag in front of their home? Do you support their liberty?

Re: ABC cancels "Roseanne" after star's racist tweet

Nope. My advocacy for liberty ends with the promotion of racist symbols that celebrate slavery and a legacy of viewing my people as sub-human. Shocker, I wouldn't defend someone's right to wave a Nazi flag either, for the same exact reason.

Just because it is someone’s right to do something like that, doesn’t mean someone needs to “support” or “defend” it. Just because it their right, doesn’t make it right.

You are not supporting "it", just their right to do it, there is a difference.

So, then you aren't really for free speech.

Re: ABC cancels "Roseanne" after star's racist tweet

Free speech is a fallacy, it doesn't exist otherwise there wouldn't be so many rules about what you can say and when and how you can say it, especially in respect to the government. Since it's already regulated, makes perfect senset to add dangerous hate speech to the offense list. With America emerging into a police state it's almost silly for people to even talk about freedom, ours are being chipped away by the handful.

I do not support someone’s right to spout racial slurs or hate speech just because our Government grants them that right. If you want to deem that not for “freedom of speech” be my guest.

The government does not grant rights, it recognizes them.
