Sure it is far eclipsed in weight and importance by the deaths of the people you mention, but will feeling bad about those deaths bring them back? Awareness and empathy are helpful, but sympathy and guilt like that is an unnecessary drain.

And the excuse of the intellectually and emotionally shallow to pretend to have some great depths of 'sensitivity'.

The fly isn't brought back by feeling bad about it either.

I don't think he was trying to portray personal depth; I think he was just being candid.
I hardly even think he was that serious about it.
I agree, the fly is not brought back either nor does it challenge any shallowness, but it is what he has experienced personally. I think a little egocentricity is necessary to survive. He's making a silly thread about it, not declaring some stupid fly should eclipse more important deaths in value. I think we should be allowed to occupy ourselves with the insignificant, it's healthy. Half of what we do here is grandly insignificant, just like this.
I don't think "real concern" is a prerequisite for action. I think understanding, awareness and appreciation are. None of these require personal emotional connection. While an emotional connection may serve as a greater impetus, that ultimately makes acts of service self-serving an sometimes less productive. When we are emotionally connected to potential service by a force such as guilt, we often seek to remediate the problems of the "victims" in need of service solely to the point of remediating our guilt. If we are connected by a detached consciousness and will to help, we often more rationally evaluate the needs of the person we encounter and do more than it would take to just get rid of our guilt trip.
As much time as many of us spend on here, we are all to some degree self-serving. I think there's a balance that each must find for themselves between service and self-service. I do not think a silly, melodramatic thread about the death of a fly drastically throws off this balance, nor is it meant to eclipse the importance of other's deaths.
JyStar made a post somewhere about something to the effect of being empathetic but not sympathetic, you'd probably agree since you're both blunt and critical. That sentiment is what I'm trying to convey. SS can be emotionally self absorbed and still contemplate the pain of others in a detached fashion.
What does OP mean?
You seem smart and all, I respect that to an extent, but there seem to be a lot of FLIES on your high horse.
