Obama directly rebukes Ahmadinejad and the holocaust deniers. He takes the long view of history reaching back to 1944, unlike those that have demanded results in Obama's first 120 days and yes he read the remarks for those that complain he uses the teleprompter too much.

Al in all it is nice to be able to take pride in our President when he visits other nations and stands up for what is right - it's been awhile.

He makes humanity proud.

While I am glad for Pres. Obama's pointed rebuke of Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for his doubts concerning the Holocaust that are, indeed, hateful, I would like President Obama to put his sentiments into action in the form of support and aid. The disastrous Rwanda genocide comes to mind, in which the U.S., while aware, made decisions that slowed, even facilitated, the genocide. The most recent that comes to mind is the genocide in Darfur, in which the U.S. government was again slow to respond. We need more regulation in repsonding to incidences of genocide before and after the impact of such a devastating act. Not to fault Obama, but these genocides could have been better contained and aided. Creating policies to overcome the slow system in recognizing genocide should be on his agenda.

So much more refeshing then the past eight years of Bush and Cheney.

It's fine that Obama did this but acting like it's some great accomplishment that the President of the United States "rebukes Ahmadinejad and the holocaust deniers" is silly.

This is not a bold position for the POTUS, it's not like the world didn't know where the President of the United States stands on the Big Question: Holocaust, real or imagined? I mean seriously! Nor was the world on edge about whether the US President supports extremists denying it. Nothing real has been accomplished or even begun. I mean, it's not 1946.

His words at Buchenwald were fine, although what his going there achieves other than a photo op is a mystery. If he wants to shine a light on the horrors of genocide, why not keep his campaign promise and address the genocide of Armenians in Turkey.

that he states the obvious is remarkable?

holy shit

is the bar that low?

i guess it is

June 5 2009, the 65th anniversary of D-Day, the Allies' successful offensive to retake France from the Germans, occurred on June 6, 1944.
The thing that happened at Buchenwald was connected with D-Day, so I would think his going to Buchenwald was something he had to do for the Jews since he was hard on them in the speech in Cairo, and his Great Uncle helped the troops close the place.
As for being in France on the 6th, well, gee I guess it is for the 65th anniversary of D-Day.

Perhaps you are not aware that Iran is holding national elections in a few days or that one of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s credible reformist challengers is running a campaign that parallels the approach of Barack Obama. Many of the young people in Iran are looking for change they can believe in. The President’s recent emphasis on holocaust denial is not accidental or without appropriate gesture. So he DOESN'T deny the Holocaust? Damn, that's one amazing president. So lucky to have a president like that. He also doesn't look that old and his hair isn't even white yet. Obama is just too good to be true. He's black too, so inspiring.

^Absolutely right Opinterph, you would think some people here do not read the papers. His visit to Buchenwald also comes on the heels of his speech to the Muslim world.

I'm waiting for someone to come on here and complain that he did not mention "gay marriage".

Yes I know about the dates. My maternal grandmother's family was wiped out in the concentration camps; I grew up having the dates and details ingrained in my memory.

But what was the great accomplishment, that we're supposed to be so Proud of Obama for? He went to a concentration camp on an anniversary. I mean, that's fine but he's hardly the first US President to do so and it doesn't change anything.

And as for going because it's "something he had to do for the Jews since he was hard on them in the speech in Cairo," I'll just say very simply that "the Jews" might think a photo op for Obama at Buchenwald is bubkus for them.

Isn't he the first American President ever to confirm that the Holocaust happened? And actually took the bold risk of touring a WWII concentration camp? I'm pretty sure he is! Oh my gosh it's just so exciting to finally have a President we can Believe In! He surely is The One We've Been Waiting For!!!

:cry::=D::cry::=D::cry::=D:

awwww we have butthurt hilary clinton supporters, george bush republicans, and just republicans shining their lights.

they are still grasping at straws. so entertaining

The first within 129 days of serving in office, I think.

Look, after crazy-assed Bush getting booed from one end of Europe to the other, I see nothing wrong with people on this forum expressing their sense of pride and admiration for the President. After all, there's an element of national relief that we aren't led by Bush, or McCain, both bumbling embarrassments to the nation. There's also Obama as the symbol of our government that does evoke a chord of nationalism, and that, too, isn't bad, in moderation.

(I wouldn't get all wet n' moist, as iman does, but we have to expect some amount of excessive puppy love from some corners.)

It's pathetic.

I mean, there's nothing wrong with Obama taking a trip, giving one of his Keebler Cookie speeches, visiting a concentration camp, filling a few news cycles with good photo ops. That's okay, I think it's fine. But this A President We Can Be Proud Of stuff over a series of photo ops is just pathetic. It's the same nonsense Obama supporters have been drooling about month after month while The One We've Been Waiting For is still keeping us waiting for something of substance.

I supported Hillary in our primary but gladly switched my support to Obama. He IS doing a fine job so far, given what is on his plate to deal with. Just imagine the mess we'd be in if the recession had blossomed while Bush was still President.

And I'll tell ya somethin' else.

This whole trip, whatever else it might be about, is another diversion from the truth of what's happening here at home.

Delinquencies and foreclosures reached another record high, and more prime and fixed-rate mortgages are falling into foreclosure. And the "re-default" rate hit 70%.

Mortgage rates suddenly started going up again last week (actually the week before, I think), which is very very bad news considering the billions Obama is pumping into the system to keep rates low.

And today unemployment figures came out. It's bad news, up again. Nonfarm payroll employment fell by another 345,000 in May; the unemployment rate continued to rise, increasing from 8.9 to 9.4 percent. The economy has lost almost 3.6 million jobs over the last 6 months.

Blaa .. let it be told to you by someone right from Europe who doesn't get his news fed from the Fox-tube. Never in at least the last 10 years the perception of the United States of America in Europe has been more positive than during the last 5 months.

No matter what you think he actually does by travels and speeches like that - it still works in your nations favor - big time.

^ So, ahem, ya thnik this whole thing was *COUGH* timed, huh? Including the D-Day memorial date?

There's brand new and very bad economic news about unemployment and home foreclosures and rising mortgage insterest rates and nobody on any of the news stations is talking about it.

But everybody's showing loops of Obama at a concentration camp that was liberated 65 years ago, and fawning over how incredible it is that the US President is calling out Holocaust deniers. It's a bit surreal.
