  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

A question for the older people on the board.

What happened to the promise that Technology would allow us all to take three day workweeks?

Actually, I've heard some companies are starting to offer four day work weeks, so it might not be THAT far off.

But it's not because of technology. It's to cut costs.

Are there not some European countries that have brought about a four day work week? I'm thinking France, maybe Spain?

AND ME FEET STILL HURT

The REALLY older generation is in the same boat (80+).

The advance in technology the last 15 or 20 years has extended the life span so greatly, the 'new' stuff is beyond most of their comprehension.

The Digital TV transition is a good example. It is just now becoming common knowledge that there are a number of very Senior people don't have TV anymore and they don't understand why.

When my Grandmother's old TV finally died, I got her a new one with a Remote Control. She never did figure out how to use it or change the channel without a physical dial on it. She was convinced the world was going to hell in a handbasket.

 where are we going? and why am I in this basket? :p

Get off my Lawn!

Seriously though, a few years ago, Grandma (along with many of her Peers) got very, very scared. Local News on the TV runs for nearly 50% of the programming on the only channel she could tune in, plus the newspaper (if it bleeds, it leads).

I remember just before she broke her hip and I visited for a week in the middle of the summer. She'd turn off the Air Conditioning about 9:30 PM--that she kept set at 78 degrees--and of course the Attic was about 150. So the house got hotter and hotter. I opened the window in my bedroom and caught such HELL for it...it was 'too dangerous' to have any window open because it was 'too dangerous because of all the Molesters out there.' So by midnight my bedroom was about 90 degrees and miserable.

She had actually considered putting bars on the windows like the old lady two doors up the street but decided it was 'too Expensive.'

This, considering the Per Capita crime rate in her town is the lowest it has been since the 1910's. Really. But the town is no longer a farm town of 5,000 souls; it is a suburb of Denver that now has around 85,000 people.

Technology for the Old People no workie, folks.

So have we gone backwards? I still don't think so. :D

Now GET OFF MY LAWN. :grrr:
