A very sad day in America....

So if a twinkie is a smooth young blonde (golden cake) filled with delicious cream then what is a Ho Ho?

a smooth young black (dark chocolate cake) filled with delicious creme.

The Hostess creator had a Filthy mind...

Im from england so its fine, ive never even had a twinkie. Im guessing now i never will :(

And now, it's time for today's useless trivia...

When Twinkies were first invented (way back in the 1930's, believe it or not...) They "cream filling" was not vanilla flavored, but actually was banana flavored. (Made with REAL banana's back then, what a concept)

But, with the onset of World War II, and the rationing that came along with it, banana's became too rare and costly to use, so the company switched to Vanilla, the same flavor that remains to this day.

Fascinating, isn't it ?

On behalf of Twinkie lovers everywhere, this has been Joshua_me with your useless Hostess trivia of the day. ..|

The only Hostess product I buy is the occasional (maybe 2 or 3 bags per year) of Hickory Sticks.

What, pray tell, is a "hickory stick" and how is it I've never heard of them ?

Are they like Slim Jim's or something ?

I don't know what Slim Jim's are, so we're sort of even.

Think of Hickory Sticks as long, skinny French Fries, cooked crispy like potato chips, and seasoned with a strong, hickory-smoke flavour. They're very tasty if you like hickory.

And Neil, your chips are known in the U.S. as "shoestring potatoes," less the hickory spray.

So, Slim Jim's have nothing in common then. We have Shoestring Fries - long, thin, French Fries that you bake in an oven, but they're nothing like Hickory Sticks, either.

Like any other American kid of a certain generation, I was raised on the spongy, almost crustless bread products such as Wonder bread and Millbrook Bread.

My family always had "American" bread and "Italian" Bread in the house. The American bread was for every day sandwiches, but it didn't toast nearly as well as the crusty Italian bread. Italian bread was delicious in sandwiches, but you got a bigger sandwich if you used American bread. (although with Italian bread, you had an excuse to make two different small sandwiches!) And Italian bread toasted...HEAVEN!

But growing up, my Mom bought either Wonder Bread or Millbrook for us. I always favored Millbrook, because they had the Peanuts gang in their advertisements. As I recall Millbrook was made by Interstate Bakeries, which also owned Dolly Madison snack products, (which competed directly with Hostess). My favorite was Dolly Madison Zingers which were a cream-filled competitor to the Twinkie, but had a coating of raspberry gel and coconut on them. They were delicious!

meh...

Twinkies and Ding Dongs I can live without... (HUSH all of you ! )

But "Wonder Bread".... Well, I gotta admit it's a childhood love that never went away....

A little tuna salad, some lettuce and tomato... And I'm a happy camper.

Hell, just slap some Nutella and banana slices on two pieces and I go to bed happy.

I can't be the only one.

Yes, today's high fiber, five whole grain bread that makes you drop a log Paul Bunyan would be proud of is much better for you, (I swear, I expect a blue ox to come charging through my bathroom with every movement) But. There's something just "special" about Wonder Bread.

It's the stuff we grew up on.

It's the stuff of rainy afternoon sick days and marshmallow fluff.

The stuff of bologna sandwiches and watching "The Price is Right" with your Grandmother over Christmas vacations, bathed in the illusion that everything was going to be alright.

It is the very definition of "comfort food".

It's not going anywhere.

This. Exactly this. Made me cry.

If they go under, I'll grieve. Still love their products.

I stopped eating junk food long ago, so this won't really effect me. Although i suppose it will be weird knowing i won't ever get to have another twinkie. I imagine my dad will stock up on twinkies when he finds this out.

mmmm I love twinkies, and especially love tasting their cream. ;) *|*

oh wait you meant....
