ABC rejects 'Big Brother' successor
Controversial 'Golden Cage' thought too costly

AMSTERDAM -- U.S. broadcaster ABC has declined the option to acquire the successor to "Big Brother" -- the controversial "Golden Cage" -- from John de Mol's company Talpa.

According to a Talpa spokesperson, ABC was put off by the costs involved in producing the program.

Broadcast in the Netherlands by RTL, "The Golden Cage" has contestants living together in a luxurious house with one goal: to irritate the other inhabitants into submission. The winner gets the house.

I don't know about the rest of you, but that show sounds AWESOME! LoL

I disagree. This would bring out the Donattos of the world and I have enough of them as is. People will go far beyond the limits of good taste and you'lll wind up not liking anyone.

Note that they were put off by the cost. Not the idea, not the execution - the cost.

I don't know... I'm picturing a Paradise Hotel. *Barph* I watch for the competitions, not to see everyone bitch at each other 24/7.

The main goal is to drive eachother crazy? That actually sounds entertaining. Stupid, but entertaining.

Nik man is there any poster on here who doesn't flirt with you lol

We already have that. It's called The Real World on MTV.

No, the main goal on The Real World is to get drunk and fight or hookup or cry. Sometimes all at the same time.
No one wins anything. But they do all lose their dignity. :-)

what if ABC just keep the idea but change the name of the show ?

therefore ABC don't need to pay for anything correct ?

ummmmm no copyright infringement by another name is still copyright infringement.

How?

can cooking ingridients be copyrighted ? answer is NO.

It's different because no one invented the ingredients used in the cooking. Stealing someone's completely original idea for a game show and changing the name is copyright infringement (if the show is copy written) much the same way stealing someone's book idea and changing the name would be copyright infringement.

how come the morning shows looks the same from different TV channels.
The only difference are their names.

example:

Sunrise
Good Morning
Today ..... etc.

Because they're all talk shows that take place in the morning. Talk show is an entire genre. Obviously you can't copyright an entire genera.

But idea's can most certainly have and can be copyrighted. There's even a develop body of law through which genes can be copyrighted to prevent developed countries from taking advantage of inhabitants of lesser developed tropical regions.

^ i think "Big Brother" can NOT be copyright as long as you don't use that name "Big brother".

Also i think genes should not be patent because genes doesn't belong to any companies.

exactly....like how FOX had Trading Spouses and ABC has Wife Swap....both are based off the premise of another show from I believe the UK....but they switched it up so that the shows are different in "gameplay" but same in premise

Ummm no. If there's a crucial difference in your show (like Real World where no one is voted out and there's no prize but it's still a reality show about people living in a house) you're fine but you can NOT just change somethign as miniscule as a name. Not only is it illegal but it's fucking amoral.

There's a new developing body of law because of genetic splicing and medical development. You see if you drug company A spends millions of dollars in genetic research to develop a unique genetic code for a specific plant, which is needed in the production of a a drug. There is a desire to patent said code so drug company B can't just use the outcome of their millions of dollars of research to develop a similar drug.

Or more often third world countries seek to gain ownership of gene sequences that are crucial for drug development so that drug companies can't just swoop in take advantage of local knowledge fly away and make millions of a natural resource from a different region.

You can trademark words for God's sake. People can claim ownership of just about anything and that includes ideas. I guarantee you. I know. I have a few myself.

I say one thing, then I will comment no longer....

CONGRAJULATIONS ABC, FOR SHOWING INTEGRITY AND SANITY!!!!!

I think that sums it up fairly well. 2 shows, 2 networks, one basically same premise with alternative rules and execution.

Through all this arguing back and forward I realized I failed to comment about the actual thread topic. While I like BB, I highly doubt ABC's version would be anything to write home about. Those kinds of shows like that (The Will, The Benefactor, etc) are canceled for a reason other than sucking.

Plus I doubt anyone could do my three fav reality shows justice if trying to copy CBS. CBS just manages to do them so well.

i dis-agree with you completely about copyright ideas.
example:
if i got an idea to go for holidays first and therefore NO one is allow to go for holidays unless they pay me copyright fees ](*,)

i dis-agree with you about patent gene codes because the company did NOT invent genes, they are already there !!!

You can't "disagree" these aren't opinions just facts I'm relaying to you. And if you think that isolating and manipulating gentic code is not work and a decent amount of invention you have a severe misunderstanding of what genetic work is. It's hard as shit.

And a holiday is not an entity. It's not a quantity. It's not something that you're going to market. It's not a valid comparison to a TV show or a movie... it just doesn't make sense.
