Blooeyez, what state do you live in? Adverse possession laws differ from state to state. Also it's likely that they're going to claim a prescriptive easement rather than outright possession.

I live in connecticut
 
Just a thought.......Do you or have you paid municipal or other government rates or taxes on the land in question? To me, who knows nix about US property laws, this would seem to provide clues as to what can or should be done.

I bought my house about 4 years ago and have been paying the taxes
 
Quite a few states if someone can show proof of maintainence on someone else's land for say 7 or 10 years, they can claim it on a quick claim deed and there isn't much you can do about it.

I just acquired 6 acres that way. Owner moved out of state and I paid the taxes on it to keep it out of a sherrif's sale and now after 7 years I own it just on that basis.

do you feel this is ethical?
 
In my area, too, Buzzyboy is right. I've had to make sure I let the neighbors know that I didn't want them on my property. Had the land surveyed, too, and some even tore out the stakes!

This is how it came to be.

The thing is his parent lived there for 30 years

The person who I bought the house from said they asked and were given permission to park their truck there, about 3 feet onto my property.
Rather than being a dick, I didn't want to make waves.
But once they paved their driveway I was a little concerned, then they kept pushing over further and further.
I got a survey and here we are.

The worst part about that is that blooeyz's neighbors can pretty much do the same thing because they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Land/property disputes are probably one of the chief causes of homicide in America... the frustration simply builds to the point where neighbors simply hack eachother to bits like in this case:

I think that's the key. Can you get an affidavit from that person saying that he gave permission for them to use the property? Think of adverse possession as a sort of statute of limitations where you can't sue for encroachments after a certain number of years. If a person is using property with the permission of the owner they can't obtain the property through adverse possession.

I'm trying.
She's moved out of state and I'll have to fly her in and put her up in a hotel for the trial as well as pay her.
 
I'd say it's time to unleash your inner bitch.

Do the neighbors have kids? Great, call your local division of family services. Nobody with kids wants that to happen. Few people can stand up to the scrutiny.

Put up a no trespassing sign and when they encroach, call the cops.

Do they throw parties and so on? Again, cops and complaints about noise.

Make them understand that you could have a negative influence on their propery values. There are lots of ways.

Study the local zoning laws.Find out exactly what you can do to make the neighbors crazy while remaining within the law.

There are thousands of little things that you can do to make your neighbors back down. It just takes a little creative thought.
