Beyond smoking a few joints in college, drinking a hashish-laced espresso (ditto), and inhaling poppers a few times when clients shoved them at my nose, I didn't and don't do drugs, and I've been drunk only once, again in college.

I thought I was a great hustler. A boy scout of hustlers really, providing good sex and good feelings. A good companion be it for a few hours or days. And I don't think I was the exception. The other hustlers I knew were similar.

I was and remain proud of my years in the sex trade. THey were good years, and I believe much good came out of them.

Oh very often escorts aren't just for sex. Anyone can get sex.

Escorts often will help people act out particular fantasies... Fetishes... Things that few people are into and an escort won't judge.

I am in the process of shooting a bunch of interview videos for a series about escorting and they tell stories about guys who just want them to flex their muscles while the client jerks off feeling their legs or sniffing their dirty gym socks. I'd always thought there was something noble about escorting.

I guess the best way to put it is that, in a way, rent boys are nurturing their clients, who already know that they're glory days are over.

Perhaps my clients regarded themselves otherwise, but I thought that many--probably most--of them were still IN their glory years. Their company was enjoyable and the sex was often great. The benefits were reciprocal.

Additionally, I'm a pretty conservative guy, as is my partner. My boy scout characterization is accurate, and the sex I have at home is pretty vanilla. Hustling had many seductive aspects, and one of the most seductive was that on occasion I would be asked to assume a persona and engage in the sort of sex that I only fantasized about, or had never even imagined. It was an adventure. Again the benefits were reciprocal.

Funny, but I sometimes did think of myself as somewhat noble. Or if not noble, at least a stand-up sort of guy, putting in an honest day's work (if you will) at a fair price.

Yes, there are studios that make bareback porn. Judging from the mail I get from readers of my blog... it's a lot more common for people who AREN'T in the industry to bareback. It sure is a lot more common, in my experience, for people to get drunk, meet a stranger and then make some very bad choices about sexual activity and partners. That generally doesn't happen in porn.

I do remember reading a study done in the 90s about infection rates among high-class gay escorts and the general gay population and it found that you were much more likely to come into contact with someone with an STD from someone who didn't escort, plus non-escorts were much more likely to have unsafe sex or not know how to protect themselves AND they didn't get tested regularly.
