And Kuli, I doubt all of them would balk at violence. The rhetoric I've heard from some of these folk would suggest otherwise.
Note that I said "violent overthrow": I've rarely met any who would actually use force to take over the country. But if they could do it legitimately, then the violence would be unleashed -- as I noted, there's an abundance of 'evangelicals' who nearly drool over the possibility of getting laws passed that would allow them to grab gays from bars and drag them off to stone them.
OTOH, if they were pushed too suddenly and too sharply, I don't doubt the possibility that all of a sudden the country's liberals would be wishing they'd listened to the NRA all those years. What could push them? Well, if tax-exemption for religious organizations were ended and donations to religious organizations were made no longer deductible, both at once, I think that could do it -- though just the second ought to be doable with little more than ripples, since many of the rank and file don't give enough (can't give enough thanks to plutocratic economic policies) to get a deduction anyway.
