Alas, after a certain age, every man is responsible for his face (do you agree)

The guy in that photo is too young to have any lines on his face, he's what 18 if he's a day.

But I agree you can tell alot about a man - or woman for that matter - from the lines on their face. The way their eyes crinkle when they smile, the lines around their mouth from the way the laugh. Of course, wrinkles come with age, and mostly are due to the loss of elasticity in the skin as they body matures. I do like the term matures, it's so much better than breaks down

Sometimes life can be cruel. And sometimes that can be reflected in our faces, not for what we've done, but for what has been done to us.

Today I discovered the most dreamy guy* ever:

I'm sure you've been told again and again never to judge a book by its cover; but there's a saying that after a certain age, every man is responsible for his face. It shows clearly on your face, what sort of person you are. If you are fun, you may have "smile creases" on your face. If you are the angry sort, you may have "creases on your brow". Just by looking at someone's face (when they are of age) can you tell a lot about their personality.

Rarely, do I find anyone from porn attractive or memorable, but today I came upon this picture and this guy, I totally fell in love with. His face is so soft and pretty and you sort of get the sense that he's very gentle and patient/ and that he'd make for good boyfriend material. (And I always liked guys who were skinny and not muscular).

Do you agree with the statement: Alas, after a certain age every man is responsible for his face. And why or why not?

Nah, genetics play a bigger role. Leaving out drug and alcohol abuse.

That's true backagain, my family don't look anywhere near their ages. My aunt is in her 70's and could pass for someone in their 50's. I'm in my 30's and could pass for someone in my 80's :p

disagree completely . Your face is a genetic accident slightly altered by external irrelevant circumstances over which you have almost no control . Accident .

every man is responsible for his face ?
How about genetics ?

no, that's being vain. someone may have the ability to control the expressions on their face but no one has control on how their face will look when they get older. there are plenty of people that spent most of their lives happy that you may find unattractive and plenty of people that spent their lives angry that you may find attractive which leads back to the point you said already that you should never judge a book by it's cover. you cannot tell how somebody is or went through just by looking at them.

Well, I used to adhere to that old adage. You deserve the face you have at 30 or 40 or 50 or whatever number they attach to it.

But then my perspective changed in a couple of ways. MAN! There are some young dudes whose faces are ravaged by drugs and alcohol. You see some mugshots and its hard to believe some of them are of guys only 19 or 24. Like, that face years ago would have been reserved only for a 50-something Nick Nolte.

But not any more! lol

Or you see more young dudes with slashed faces or faces covered in so many tattoos that you can barely tell if something is a wrinkle or just a buttcrack on a Chinese dragon.

And then I had to start to take into account how many faces are being eaten off these days. Whether by angry chimp or crazy festival-goer, some people have their faces mauled. And generally they can't be held responsible for the face they get in the end.

But if you discount the premature effects of drugs, alcohol, tats, ice pick slashings, irate chimps and crazy cannibals, I suppose that with age still comes facial compromise.

Now I only question the part of the old saying which seems to insinuate that a man deserves it (the face he has at a particular age). Deserve? If one has crow's feet, it tends to indicate years in the sun - more years simply than some 17 yr-old boy might have been in the same sun.

Or gravity simply has a 40 year head start on older men. There isn't a lot one can do to defy the weight of the world whether it comes in the form of stress or some damn g-force.

I only look at markers on other guys' faces which seem to indicate specific behaviors. Well-hydrated, well-fed men tend to retain a more youthful facial appearance than do hard-drinking, dehydrated smokers who scowl.

But then that would be a bit of a no-brainer.

Theres more to life than having a pretty face..

I'd like to think I earned every wrinkle on mine!

No, not really. You have what you were born with and what your DNA says it will become. I can agree on some of the smaller things, some wrinkles or creases. And one can certainly maybe partly control the fat, double chin, chubby cheeks, etc. Other that than, the general shape of our face you have no control of, without resorting to cosmetic surgery.

It seems a bit presumptuous, and more than a tad shallow. I can push that saying forward enough to make it mean "If you're born with unattractive features, it's up to you to get surgery done to make yourself acceptably attractive. If you don't, you have only yourself to blame if people want nothing to do with you." And that's fine for individuals. If you want to have nothing to do with unattractive people in any way shape or form, you can just not deal with them, or not look at them. But I recall one JUBber saying that ugly people should stay home, because he "shouldn't have to see that ugliness when I'm out". Fuck that shit. Everybody has a right to be ugly.

Maybe if we had face molds we could reconfigure and then place over our faces to mold them to that form, we could be completely responsible for our faces. :D

It's akin to a highway: the builder isn't responsible for the geology underneath, just for the surface he's made.

I think LIFE is responsible for your face. I have been told many times that I have aged very well. I have almost no wrinkles at my age.
But I also took care of myself and avoid too much sun.

And then I see the faces of guys on some dating sites and go Yikes! And many are only in their late 20's to mid 30's! Holy cow, what have they done in life? Most look way older, or just plain SHOT. Not a great first impression at ALL.

Seriously, with what's out there lately, I'm re-considering girls.

If it's not real you can't hold it in your hand. You can't feel it with your heart. And I won't believe it but if it's true, you can see it in your eyes. Oh even in the dark.

But the saying isn't about whether someone is ugly or beautiful. I think I may have sent out mixed messages when I posted a pic of that guy. My interpretation of the quote was that your personality shows on your face after a certain age. At a certain age, you become almost like an open book in a sense. People can tell just by looking at you what kind of person you are, whether you are shy, aggressive, confident...etc.

It's a statement that can be read anyway you want to read it, I guess. You can read it to mean "your inner self shows through on your face eventually", or you can read it as a tagline for a commercial for Oil of Olay. I think your reading is a nice read of it, but I don't believe it. There are far too many assholes out there who hide their intentions behind an attractive and earnest face for decades. And for some, their faces will only display one thing to nearly everybody for their entire lives.
