The Christian Right blasts Obama for observing the National Day of Prayer in private.
In the link, they provide a video of right-wing hack, E. Hasselbeck going on and on about NDP being celebrated at the White House a "national tradition" and how Obama is being a heretic, even though the very founder of Christianity specifically instructed that the faithful are not to pray in public like the hypocrites and pagans, but instead go into their rooms, lock the door, and pray in private.

When, oh when, will we be rid of the Christian Right?

I was reading another forum about this subject and someone put the Bible passage for what you referred to. It is:

From the Book of Matthew:

6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

So what I take of this passage is they need to become closet Christians. If only.
Do you know how many problems would be solved if they were closet Christians?

I read some other accounts of this. I wrote to one site and said that as a Christian, I'm totally ashamed of them.

Obama is president to Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Jains, Zoroastrians, Masons, Confucians, Mormons, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, Jehovah's Witnesses, Deists, and others, plus agnostics and atheists. Now, just which of those should he put a government blessing on by his actions?

I used to wear a cross pretty much all the time. Now I refuse to, and the answer I've given when other Christians asked me why not (one asked if I was ashamed to be a Christian!), I told them that if I had to rely on posting a sign for people to know I'm a Christian, then I'd be such a sorry Christian that wearing one would make people think it's just jewelry... which is what people think, anyway, because so many people wear crosses in vain, and so many wear them and act contrary to what the cross means (like, trying to get laws passed to force people to behave like Christians).

I often think it's a martyr complex: they want to be visible, so they can attract negative attention, so they can tell themselves how righteous they are.

Obama should tell them this verse, then when he gets asked if he prayed in private, say, Well, if I told you, it wouldn't be secret, right?

And Jesus made it clear that they have the reward they were looking for: attention.

^I can see that shirt becoming all the rage, Kuli.

Could be good, if it weren't for the fact that among Jews 'Pharisee' is a compliment. It's possible SOME people might take that t-shirt as antiSemitic.

Tanks! !oops!

I think....

Okay, so we put a New Testament reference on it.

Then a hundred of us wearing them could go to the next National Prayer Breakfast for Congress.....

There are NT reference shirts I'd wear. I'm particularly fond of Micah 6:8, for example.

Apparently we're the "heretics" when we quote to them the entire chapter of Mathew Chapter 6.

But it's okay for them to quote a verse or two out of Leviticus (pick one) as our Gay brothers, sisters, and patriots are being buried, or their families publicly humiliated by the "Christian Right."

They're just pissed because

Because he observed the New Testament's teaching in Mathew 6 verse 5 (The entire scripture being previously quoted):

5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
I mean, what kind of example is President Obama presenting when he doesn't pray like Bush or the American Right Wing of GOP does because he's obviously following the teachings of the New Testament???

SCANDAL!

HERETIC!

WITCH!

GODLESS SODOMITE!

LOL :-<

The only question that I have for most of those fuckers is this:

"After the RAPTURE, can I have your car?"

:p

I think these Rapture-believers should not be allowed to have driver's licenses. After all, they intend to abandon their cars at highway speeds if "the moment" comes when they're driving. That's...I dunno, attempted reckless endangerment? Conspiracy to recklessly endanger? Something like that.

I like the idea of denying them DLs because in order to fight it they'd either have to argue that they have a right to kill other people on the highway, or admit that they don't really believe in the Rapture.

Well you could give them the option of specifying the exact time of the Rapture, and if they won't - well there are a whole lot of things they should be prohibited from doing just as a matter of public safety.

No doubt they'd be more than willing to cooperate since they're such nice Christians and all.

I'm sure Congress would see bills introduced requiring technology that would identify the driver and turn on guidance software set to take over in case of the disappearance of that driver.

"You believe in the Rapture?"
"Yes."
"Do you believe you'll be Raptured when the Day comes?"
"Yes."
"Then you can't have a driver's license."
"WHAT?!?!"
"Well, do you believe you have the right to kill people who don't believe in the Rapture and WON'T be going with you when the Rapture comes?"
"Certainly not!"
"Well, if you're driving when it happens, people could die. You go in the same class as an epileptic with severe and frequent seizures. Sorry, matter of public safety."
"But--"
"But WHAT? But you don't really believe you'll be Raptured? You think the fact that I don't believe it means I can't protect the public? I'm willing to acknowledge I might be wrong. If I am...people will die if you get Raptured while driving. I can't take that risk."
"I'll sue you!"
"What for? I'd really love to see exactly what that pleading will assert. Seriously, bring it on."

"Well, do you believe you have the right to kill people who don't believe in the Rapture and WON'T be going with you when the Rapture comes?"

Here's the rub.

"I'm not killing them, God is."
