American Idol: Season 10

I kinda enjoyed Iggy actually, Constantine's performance was a gazillion times worse. The only thing running through my mind was that the entire music industry must've been busy this week if THAT is the guest performer. Seriously, was Taylor Hicks busy? At least he won.

I agree that she had the biggest range of the people you named, but they're probably still here because, whether successfully or not, they took chances with some faster-paced songs and they switched things up, different arrangements every week. This isn't American Range, it's American Idol. People are looking for more than big finishing notes, they want character. She hid behind her microphone.

Or teen girls are texting like beasts and this show has been hijakced by them for three seasons now, which is why only girls have been eliminated thus far, and a girl will never win again unless they limit the number of votes per phone. Just saying.

I mean not for nothing, but what risks did Jacob, Stefano and Scotty take? They did the same boring shit every week.

That said, I'm so glad my girl Haley has stepped it up and avoided the Bottom Three for two weeks now! We need to start a campaign to keep her on this show. LOL. Did you guys notice she was the only contestant who didn't seem shocked/unhappy about Pia's boot? Haley keeps it real. She was totally thinking, "Um this is a game show and we all just got one step closer to the showcase showdown, bitches." Love her!

I don't think sexism has anything to do with it. It's just that, ever since around season seven, the vast majority of American Idol's voters are either preteen girls or middle-aged housewives, and they vote for the ones whom they find attractive, rather than anything based on talent. Crystal losing to Lee last year was the perfect example since one was so obviously far ahead of the other on the talent scale.

Exactly. Yes, last season it was really glaring. Not only was Crystal consistently good all season long, but she OWNED Lee in all three performances at the finals. Several publications noted that Lee winning was the first time an Idol winner -- whether you agreed/liked all the past winners or not -- had problem staying on pitch when he sang. His "Beautiful Day" on finale night was ghastly. No other reason for his win than the teen girl power-voters

I didn't mean Indiana Jones risk but, as a performer myself, I can tell you that 99% of us are tempted to perform ballads because it's easier to stand there and focus on your voice rather than moving around, working each area of the crowd, bouncing up and down AND trying to stay on pitch. In that regard, they did take risks because they've all done faster-paced songs. Huge risks? Nah, but risks nonetheless.

Yes, her style of music generally portrays a brand of honesty that you'll never ever find in mainstream pop music. This makes even more sense, if she's smart, she knows Jacob won't get the teenygirl vote cuz he's ugly as bat-shit so he's not really a threat, and probably is a good/fun guy to be around when he's not thinking he's god's gift to a microphone.

This is why I think it will be a Scotty, Stefano showdown. I think Stefano looks like a hobbit but he portrays the conventional sort of hotness that makes pre-teen panties wet. Maybe his DUI and drug bust will cost him some votes. #fingerscrossed #teamhaley

Yeah, I saw Haley smiling when the camera panned to the others during Pia's elimination. I was going to point it out when I posted Haley's reaction to Jacob but decided not to hammer my apathy for Pia further or mention something that would make everyone turn on Haley. ;)

Out of the eight left, Haley is probably my third favorite after Casey and VFTW pick Paul. I'd love to see her outlast Lauren, but it won't happen. I fully expect Lauren to be the last girl standing since she's country to appeal to the south and a younger girl. Most of the females who HAVE done better in the last few years of tween/frau domination were younger, like Alison and Siobhan. I could see her outlasting Haley, Jacob, Paul and Stefano at this point, which is... ugh.

OK, I get that the tween girls who vote can't actually vote against somebody, they can only vote for people. So it doesn't necessarily mean that they hate Pia, just that they're indifferent to her. That said -- really, fewer of them voted for Pia than Paul? Who had an abortion, live, onstage Wednesday night? Seriously?

Pia aborted Tina Turner's River Deep, Mountain High. She didn't even carry the song to term. :(

This is an excellent point, thank you for making it. With all the Monday morning quarterbacking we're all doing (myself included ) to explain Pia's exit, we should all remember that the voting isn't set up to vote someone off. If it were -- if Idol asked you to vote out the worst singer -- then we could argue that Pia's lack of stage presence of whatever was the main reason for her boot. However, with the competition set up as voting for your favorite, all it means is that she got less votes than the other kids. This slight (but crucial) distinction in logic favors the theory that 1) teen girls power-vote for the boys and simply garnered them more votes than Pia and/or 2) a lot of Pia's fans felt she was safe anyway and didn't think they needed to vote.

However you feel about the following people, Idol has a real problem now with consistently good female singers not winning against lesser competition (Crystal/Katherine McPhee), missing out on the finals (Melinda) or just plain going way too early (Pia). Want a more sobering statistic? In the past three seasons since power-texting among teen girls has developed, the Final Four has only yielded three female contestants. Think about that. THREE out of TWELVE. And this season will likely make that statistic even worse.

Here's how I think idol should proceed in the future to deal with this problem. Why not make the judges actually do something? What if every week, the judges picked a winner -- the best performance of the night -- and that person essentially wins immunity that week, and is therefore automatically safe from elimination? They could do this until say, Final Three week. I think it's much better than the stupid save twist because it would achieve the following:

1) Make the judges seem relevant, and it would actually force them to choose the best person each week, rather than just giving bland "A for Effort" critiques to everyone.

2) Allow the show to save a consistently good female performer each week and at least give her a shot at the finals.

3) If the same person kept winning week after week, it would build a narrative that this person DESERVES to go to the finals, and America responds to that kind of narrative (it's why America always roots for challenge winners on Survivor/Big Brother etc).

Other talent-based reality shows like Project Runway already incorporate this into their schema, and it works well. I mean, they could also just allow one vote per phone each week, but I doubt they'll ever do that, because then they won't be able to boast those ridiculously inflated numbers ("50 million votes came in"...never mind they're all from an All-Girls' prep school in the South). I really think this could spark new life into the show and remedy a glaring problem. Otherwise, we'll never see a female winner on this show again.

If there's one silver lining to the teen girls power-texting fiasco, it's that Miss Piggy won't win this show either. She may make it to the finals (ugh), but those teen girls will make sure whatever sex-less guy she's standing next to takes the crown.

I find vestigial comfort in that. I hope she bawls like a baby when it happens. Idol owes me that.

Yeah, Lauren was never winning, and Pia's sudden elimination only proved that a girl is never going to win again under this format. Which is hilarious because the show was purposely stacked with "good" females and "bad" males this year but one of those "bad" male singers is now going to win. Anyway, anything past final four is probably a push for Lauren, since she's splitting the country votes with Scotty.

Though, I wouldn't blame Taylor beating Kat on this, since I doubt the tween girls thought that Taylor Hicks was a totally cute hottie or anything. (But I did...) I guess America just wanted a spastic Muppet to win in 2006.

I've got some vestigal comfort for you right here. :sex:

I agree that nobody except Tina should ever attempt that song. So Pia made a mistake, but I'm pretty sure she was not voted off by hardcore Tina fans. :)

And she was still the second best singer on the show. I'm trying to decide if I'm going to continue watching or not. I may just fast forward to James's performances. I'm already fast forwarding through the judges' comments, and I stopped watching the results show years ago...

I know, I just wanted another chance to verbalize how awful her performance was, especially in comparison to the original. And with the abortion thing you just sorta set it up for me.

Just to bring some perspective about the kinds of people who are voting on this show, this...

...lost to this:

'Nuff said. Pia should be flattered.

This show is going down, i dont even watch it anymore.

Its sad i dont even know who the last american idol was?

I hate to tell you this but it is not going down soon. It is still the 1 and 2 spot of the ratings so it will be back next year at the very least.

I think, like BB, we watch so we can bitch and complain about the contestants, the judges, the dr sessions, the hateful, the mean, the endearing, the talented. And being in a community like this where you can voice it all among people who do.

It's pronounced "Dwize?" I've been calling him Lee "Doo-zee" since, well, the three or four times I've uttered his name. I couldn't even remember last year's winner until Sgt Pepper posted those videos.

Apparently Pia already has been signed by Interscope and she's starting work on an album immediately. Nigel even acknowledged in an interview that, since he knew the results, he knew that Pia wasn't the frontrunner when it came to voting. Kind of makes you wonder what the point of this show is if the producers are actively ignoring the results to push whomever they like.

But unless the record company really whores her out, I hope she enjoys her album selling 30k or so before she fades into oblivion and all of her outraged fans forget that she exists.

As much as I liked Pia on Idol, I have to admit, this scenario is almost guaranteed to happen. Unless she stumbles into a "Since U Been Gone" type hit (which is incredibly rare and unlikely), she'll be forgotten by the time The X Factor premieres.

Truth is, I don't watch this show anymore to see who will make it as a recording artist in the real world. History has proven that who becomes a genuine pop star has little to do with winning this show, and indeed if they do win and make it big in music (Kelly and Carrie), it's completely unrelated.

With that in mind, I pretty much watch the show acknowledging that there is the real world, and then there is the Idol world. In Idol world, an Adam/Kris finale made me extremely happy even though only one of them had a realistic chance of making it big...and Adam still hasn't quite done that yet. In Idol world, for me this year, Pia was better than Scotty, Jacob, Paul, Casey, Stefano and (of course) Lauren. In the real world, I don't think Haley Reinhart would light up the billboard charts, but in Idol world for me this year, she deserves to win the whole damn thing.

Just thought of something, I think the judges sent Pia home! She was always safe as long as she did ballads, perhaps because the only thing teenage girls like more than hot guys is a good ballad. That might've been the only thing keeping her in the competition (along with her tiny waist and big chest).

The judges pushed her away from ballads and the moment they did she went from safety to getting the boot. This is the judge's fault! :rotflmao:
