Re: Amy Winehouse - When Is It Too Soon To Make Fun Of A Tragedy?

I was only aware of this late singer's life when reading newspaper reports on her addictions.

I had never listened to her music until after her death;then I understood that she was one of the very, very few in contemporary popular music who not only could sing, but sing with a quality that mesmerised me sufficiently to want to hear more of her enchanting voice.

Re: Amy Winehouse - When Is It Too Soon To Make Fun Of A Tragedy?

It all depends on your audience. Let's face it, those who believe Winehouse was an addict of all sorts, and who feel she brought it on herself, are going to be more accepting of making light of the situation. Those who see her death as a tragic "cry for help", or a situation that could've been prevented, are not going to appreciate levity towards the situation.

Re: Amy Winehouse - When Is It Too Soon To Make Fun Of A Tragedy?

well, how long do you want people to wait after you kick the bucket before cracking jokes?

Well, as soon as they learn the new of my death!!! I hope that people will laugh so hard after my demise that their rib cage will hurt. I don't want to see people crying after I am gone. My life has always been a joke, I expect hysterical laugh after the punchline!

Re: Amy Winehouse - When Is It Too Soon To Make Fun Of A Tragedy?

Well... She said she wasn't going to rehab ....

Re: Amy Winehouse - When Is It Too Soon To Make Fun Of A Tragedy?

There is not time limit, that's on you. People were making fun of her soon as she died. I listen to a lot of podcast and comedians were cracking on her left and right but they are like most people, when Greg Giraldo died from drugs, none of them made jokes, they were sad/upset, and when that Artie guy who worked for Howard Stern almost died, I heard none of them make jokes either so its all relative. It the person matters to you in some way, then you don't fun of them.

Addiction is a disease even though it looks like a behavior problem. The majority of addicts don't find recovery. The irony is that she may have died from withdrawal. Funny? I don't think so.

In my case they don't have to wait at all ... anyone is more than welcome to crack jokes about me whilst I am still alive ... at least then I might get to hear them ... whereas when I am dead I will be, well, dead.

she still chose to do them for the first time she wasnt addicted to it before ever doing it

Re: Amy Winehouse - When Is It Too Soon To Make Fun Of A Tragedy?

It's never 'too soon' to make fun of a tragedy.

Everything is worthy of being sacrificed on the altar of humour ... and for some of us, laughter is the only way to deal with the fickle tragedies of the world.

Let me see if i understand you properly , when thousands were murdered on 9/11
you made fun of that .
When Princess Diana was killed in Paris you made fun of that .
When one of our soldiers is killed in Afghanistan or Iraq you find humour in that .
When thousands of children are dying each day through lack of clean water and
dying slowly and most painfully through hunger that they will even try and eat
dirt and grass you have a little giggle before the alter of humour .
Would you still be having a giggle if you were slowly rotting away in a hospital
bed from a very painfull terminal illness ?
Just asking .

Re: Amy Winehouse - When Is It Too Soon To Make Fun Of A Tragedy?

Sigh.....

Wasn't a tragedy.

I like the person known as 'hooded rat'

Re: Amy Winehouse - When Is It Too Soon To Make Fun Of A Tragedy?

I think it might be good etiquette to take the wishes of the deceased into account. In the case of Amy Winehose, I suspect she would not have been reduced to a quivering heap of insecurities by a certain amount of premature mockery.

But I can only speak for myself. If I were to succumb to something worthy of a darwin award, I hope I would be roundly mocked for it, even by people who for whatever reason felt some tenderness towards me.

I don't think grief and satire are mutually exclusive.

Re: Amy Winehouse - When Is It Too Soon To Make Fun Of A Tragedy?

They tried to say that it was too soon, but I said no, no, no...

Re: Amy Winehouse - When Is It Too Soon To Make Fun Of A Tragedy?

I thought she was a tragedy while she was still alive.

Too late? More like the show's over...

Re: Amy Winehouse - When Is It Too Soon To Make Fun Of A Tragedy?

Hey there Bankside .
I can see your point , but you and i both know that there is a huge difference
between satire and just being a nasty little git who have to make fun of someone
dying because they themselfs have no life .
No matter what anyone thought of the woman she had a wonderfull talent and
to die at the age of 27yrs through whatever reason is such a waste of a life .
Also if anyone saw her father on tv that is the aftermath and tragedy of being
a drug addict . :(

Re: Amy Winehouse - When Is It Too Soon To Make Fun Of A Tragedy?

The day she died, I ended up telling my friends:

So, they tried to make her go to rehab...In hindsight, she probably should have said yeah, yeah, yeah...

That may just be my sense of humour, or it may be the fact that someone who actively engages in something they know will likely end up killing them (especially hard drugs and the like) knew the risks and had options to get out of that lifestyle...But decided not to.

As such, I find it hard to feel sorry for someone who purposefully chose to self-destruct rather than get help...That may sound harsh...But, I suppose that's my view on it.
