I would say that was true when I was a child. I don't know if that's true today.

It changed after Carter/Reagan when white Democrats and evangelicals switched to the Republican Party and New England moderate Republicans moved toward the Democratic Party. A lot of Americans watched their parents change parties. You can pretty much guess how someone will vote based upon a) where they live, b) whether they attend church weekly and c) whether they pursued higher education.

These days, it seems there's the tribal crowd who vote straight party ticket and then there's the rest of us who are increasingly frustrated with both parties.

This is true . There should have been $$$ limits as were proposed years ago and was shot down.

And you have a mercifully short campaign cycle. In the US, the campaigns are perpetual.

Minimum 30 days. Maximum 50 days.

By law, that can be extended... but it's not always a good idea to do so.

In 2015, then prime minister Stephen Harper extended the campaign length (lawfully) from 50 to 76 days. He was leading for most of the campaign and lost it to Trudeau in the last 2 weeks.

By the way, candidates who break the campaign financial limits can do jail time. Mine did when he spent $2,500 of his own money. His defence was that the company doing his Robocalls didn't complete the contract and and the undone portion of it would have brought him below the campaign limit.

The judge didn't buy it.
