So... they were speaking in tongues in front of the White House.

They may have been, but not during that video. I've been present when people spoke in tongues, and eulalia doesn't sound like English. She was plainly speaking in English the entire time, and the murmuring and echoing replies of those in the circle were just English phrases of affirmation.

The practices in the video are not so much charismatic as pseudo-charismatic, more like the call and answer found in many Black Protestant denominations. The main difference is that when most whites do it, it is a poor imitation, a sham ecstatic response, much akin to whistling past a dark alley. The name-it-claim-it sect of Fundamentalism is evident, with anti-curses being proclaimed on St. Trump of the Snatch-n-Grab, or St. Pedo-Naster in the Orthodox orders.

  • It's an example of how fringe religious behavior has become mainstream. More and more people are moving out of traditional denominations like Methodism and into these charismatic Pentecostal movements.
Praying in public isn't considered fringe behavior in the U.S., at least not within the Christian majority. The differences in prayer practices and traditions are allowed, so this semi-ecstatic display isn't regarded as anything odd, aside from their ability to completely ignore Trump's greed, vanity, cruelty, arrogance, pride, lying tongue, lechery, and trust in earthly power. Hearing them attempt to sanctify him is a bit like hearing Roman Christians asking God to hem about Nero or Caligula with a hedge of protection.

To be more precise, the shift from "mainline" denominations to non-denominational neo-charismatic Fundamentalists has already occurred. Many, including Christian, Americans think "mainline churches" mean mainstream. Not so. Mainline referred to the most recognizable Protestant churches that were not evangelical, and by the 20th century, were increasingly liberal theologically and socially. Wikipedia cites that by 1970, they comprised the majority of Protestants in the US at 30%, but that by 2009, only 15%. It would be even less today.

Protestantism has actually become more homogeneous in a way, with mainline churches adopting the cultural practices, music, and rhetoric of the non-denominational pseudo-charismatics, and then the Baptists and superchurches also adopting the same. Many Protestant Americans can go to Grace Methodist this week, and sing praise songs and hear a sermon and next week, attend Victory Christian megachurch and sing the same songs, hear the same messages, and really not encounter any theological difference.

And it's possible because religious Americans have become less religious. They talk religion a lot, but live the same lives as their secular neighbors. And, now that the Christian right has become co-opted by MAGA, they have to abandon even more Christian tenets in order to support the GOP and Trump. This came on the heels of the Great Retreat as COVID caused many to stop attending anywhere, and they now are jeaous of their time and barely support their local churches.

It's a group of Texas pastors, at least one of whom is speaking in tongues.

Sharon Bolan Yerby is the woman in the foreground. She has a church in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area. She's not speaking in tongues. It's English, even if it's just a bunch of random Pentecostal buzzwords and phrases. It's the usual exhortation type of prayer which tends to sound like a locker room pep talk, only with random religious references.

In the first minute of the video, you can hear a male voice saying nonsense words like "balala". It doesn't sound like my favorite shyster, Kenneth Copeland, who has a "church" not too far from Sharon Bolan's church . Copeland always sounds like someone imitating a West African dialect.

Speaking in Tongues- The Remix!

Paula White, who is Trump's head of the White House "faith office", has similar West African rhythm (think, "put de lime in de coconut, she drank 'em bot' up") but White likes to roll her "r".

Like a lot of these con artists, Bolan is quick to put on the "martyr" mantle and claim that "Christians are under attack!" when challenged on why 50% of her "ministry" income goes to paying for her salary and maintaining her "former international runway model" cosmetic procedures.

If you are in need of a visual aid to help with creative names to call "God" during your White House prayer sessions, Bolan offers a blanket with the "names of God" written on it for just $95. Supplies are limited!

Yep. Upon re-listen, I can hear him in the background praying "batta, batta, batta, batta, batta" but he never gets to "SWING!" :rotflmao:

It’s fine to dislike Murkowski for being an oily politician for whom survival will always trump any principle but it’s not her job to save the country from a bad bill, her job is to represent Alaska and she did that. It’s Mike Johnson’s job to spare the people of Louisiana but he’s not going to do that. I can’t tolerate either one of them but I’d much rather have Murkowski represent me.

Ms. Murkowski, if you knew it was a bad bill, why didn't you vote no? I'm starting to agree with those of you who are saying that GOP congress critters bellyaching about bills they eventually vote for is just performative theater. I suspect they decide ahead of time who's going to publicly have problems with it on the floor, only to magically line up just enough votes to pass it when they actually vote on it.

Just going to point out something- Mike Johnson is a Republican from Louisiana but he's also Speaker of the House and the second in line in Presidential succession. He does have a bigger responsibility to the nation at large.

This bill is not a small piece of legislation that can be laden with pork. It's the 10 year budget for the Federal government and it is being passed under Budget Reconciliation. It includes raising the debt ceiling and massively exploding the Federal debt and the annual deficit, which means that the Treasury will be printing money to cover Treasury securities that will be declining in value.

Everyone, Democrat or Republican, is responsible for the financial security of the United States. When the foreign investors pull money out of securities and the interest rate on the Federal debt has to increase to attract more investment, every citizen in the United States will suffer for a generation. Voting for the bill under the excuse you got freebies for Alaska is a shit excuse for tanking the entire Federal economy. Murkowski is not stupid. She knows that is exactly what she just did.

Yeah right.....and I'm told that killing people is not the republican objective. She is just bold enough to admit it outright. While the rest of them hide it in legislative bureaucracy, budget cuts, and making agencies dysfunctional, so that people die slowly, painfully, and mercilessly. They know people will die because of what they're doing. People are already dying because of the loss of USAID. Those deaths are directly on Trump and the entire republican party that allowed it. Death by a thousand cuts on top of miles of red tape. They know what they're doing.

It is her job to save the country from a bad bill. Pure and simple.

Yes, it is her job to save the country from a bad bill. She took an oath to the Constitution and the rule of law. Not an oath to get what I can for my state and fuck the whole rest of the country. But that's the republican way, isn't it. I got mine, screw everyone else.

She could have had some honor and integrity and voted to save the country from a disastrous bill that will harm millions of people and will ultimately harm her state as well.

She could have been "John McCain", but instead she chose to be Benedict Arnold.

Tsk tsk. Those teachers at Christian religious schools can't help but taste the cookies.

A teacher at a Clay County church school was charged June 11 with soliciting a child online for sex, jail records show.

Joshua Dice, 34, was the second employee of Calvary Christian Academy in Middleburg arrested in the past three years on charges involving underage sex...

One of the abbreviated charges listed against Dice involved using a computer to seduce, solicit or lure a child “misrep age,” which may suggest the charge might involve online contact with an adult, such as a police officer, posing as a child to catch pedophiles.

Dice was also charged with traveling to meet a minor for sex following his arrest in the 600 block of Blanding Boulevard in Orange Park and using a two-way device (like a cell phone) to facilitate a felony.

This is the second teacher from Calvary Christian Academy in Florida. In 2022, a female teacher was arrested for having sex with one of her students.

A 26-year-old Middleburg church teacher has been arrested after a student there reported "multiple sexual encounters" when they would meet in Nassau County, according to authorities.

Caitlin Rose Crum of Jacksonville was charged Wednesday with sexual battery with a victim older than 12 and promoting sexual performance of a child. Her bail was set at $125,000, Nassau jail records show.

Greater Grace World Outreach is a Pentecostal group of churches. They have over 500 churches world-wide. Their main church is in Baltimore and it has about 1,500 members.

Greater Grace also operates church schools. In 2019, over 50 former students at the school came forward with allegations that they had been sexually abused by male employees at the church or the school. The investigation into the allegations revealed a 40 year history of sexual abuse at Greater Grace.

Former Baltimore church pastor indicted for child sex abuse allegations from 1980
A former Baltimore church pastor was indicted in Massachusetts on child sex abuse charges, according to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office.

Eric Anderson, a former pastor at Greater Grace World Outreach church, is facing two counts of assault and battery on a child under 14.

The charges stem from incidents that allegedly occurred in June 1980, Julia Sabourin with the attorney's office said.

Rev. Anderson's son had previously been convicted

Web of megachurch sex abuse leads to a trusted pastor and his sons

In all, 32 people told The Millstones they had been sexually abused as children by men of Greater Grace, primarily prominent church members or leaders. Some shared their stories for the first time, several before they had mustered the courage to tell their own families. The Millstones also learned of 18 additional survivors through people they considered trusted sources. And no place — not even the church’s most beloved institutions — was safe from predatory behavior. Not the annual conference of foreign missionaries or summer camp. Not even the church building itself...

It was Jesse Anderson, a youth volunteer who taught Bible classes to kids and teens and worked as a camp counselor. He had also been convicted of molesting a boy in the church and had escaped prison time for his felony offenses.

Anderson belonged to one of the church’s best-known families, the second youngest of four boys. His older brother, Jonathan Anderson, was also a Sunday School teacher and church camp counselor. And his father, Pastor Eric Anderson, was the longtime head of the Maryland Bible College and Seminary and a friend of Pastor Carl Stevens, the church’s founder...

Notably, none of the male sexual predators at Greater Grace is a drag queen.
