And Let's not forget about the other Deplorables

So Jones will be laughing all the way to the bank.

His 'Blue collar jury...living on another planet' only awarded the SandyHook parents 4 million dollars.

Jones was clearing 800K a day with his lies.

This is fucking obscene.

Isn't he facing two more suits? I suppose this is good news for whoever's next in line, there's still some meat left on the bones. Remember this is AmeriKKKa, a $4mil settlement for a rich well-connected white guy, the Canadian equivalent would be like taking his whole house and all his cars and clearing his bank accounts and leaving him with nothing but his boxers and a sock. I'm still amazed this made it to a court room period, I would've presumed it would've ended in a 250K settlement behind closed doors. It's kind of unprecedented to hold someone accountable for simply lying and spreading conspiracies and the ensuing damages.

Texas does trials in separate phases: economic damages and punitive damages.

In Texas, punitive damages may not exceed more than two times the amount of economic damages plus the amount equal to non-economic damages not to exceed $750,000 or $200,000, whichever is greater.

Since Jones has been found guilty, the $4 million will be the economic damages. Punitive damages are capped at 200% of economic damages, so they could hit him with up to $8 million in punitive damages.

They asked for $150 million which would have put Jones into bankrupty. $12 million would be painful but wouldn't be enough to put him into bankruptcy. If Jones' lawyer is smart - which so far has not been the case! - he will tell his client to pay them the money to to shut his mouth.

Considering Jones behavior, his lying and his disrespect of the judge, I bet she's going to send him to jail for perjury and contempt. He's lucky that he's not in one of the redneck areas of Texas- a (male) judge in the Republican areas of Texas would have already thrown his ass into jail.

I'm still stocking up on popcorn because Jones' attorney did something that made this trial worthwhile: he accidentally released all of Jones' emails and texts which is going to be really handy to the DOJ investigations of Jan 6.

Boy. Oh boy.

Insult the judge. Insult the jury.

"We screwed up and sent all that stuff to the plaintiff's attorney, so can we please get a mistrial. Pretty please?"

$12 million is chump change.

But if he beats a perjury charge then there is no justice for the nakedly evil.

However, if the Jan 6th committee now has his cell data and texts, there is some compensation.

I don't think this is the last defamation suit out there.

Perjury isn't something people go to prison for years over. The leaked records will mean far more to the Bankruptcy court he lied to than anything else.

Unless of course there are sedition and conspiracy charges to be had.

It's telling that the Judge refused to exclude any mention of the leaked records, OR grant a mistrial, makes me wonder esactly what he was sauying and how bile it actually was - or criminal.

Criminal charges carry actual punishment, no matter how much money you award to the victims, he'll just lie and live out of the Cayman Islands, or Cyprus, or somewhere similar. That won't even shut down Infowars, which will just continue under "other ownership."

That's the problem with cockroaches, there's always some crevice for them to scurry into...

That crap won't stop until it's no longer profitable, and that won't happen until you regulate social media, and re-evaluate what "free speech" actually means. You have to inhibit it by making it toxic to the carriers, if the ISP is responsible for what is being disseminated, they'll cut him off themselves.

LET THE WHINING BEGIN!!

Alex Jones pleaded for the prayers of his Infowars audience as he lashed out at his “damn” lawyers for mistakenly handing over a copy of his cellphone data...Now, it appears that the January 6 committee will be getting a copy of his text messages and emails as well. Attorney for the plaintiffs, Mark Bankston, told the court in Texas that he has already been contacted by “several law enforcement agencies” to turn over the data and said he intends to do so....
“I need your hope, your prayers,” said Jones on his show the day after the court bombshell and as he waited for a jury to return its verdict.

Alex wants your thoughts and prayers.

May that do him as much good as it did the victims at Sandy Hook.

What a vile and loathsome piece of shit.

The benefit of this, though I can't measure if it's a negligible or significant amount, is there are a lot of republicans who are not racist or are only mildly racist and seeing this graduation from "mean memes about black people being apes are funny teeheehee" to promoting racist terrorism and hate groups is causing a lot of people to re-think their political beliefs and they're sliding to the left with their tails between their legs like "Yeah maybe black people were right this party's super racist."

After one of my more peaceful exchanges about color politics I practically talked a guy into switching to democrat on twitter last night. There's no more hiding or "No you're just being sensitive" this is as naked as bigotry gets. If republicans could reanimate Hitler they'd have Zombie Hitler speaking at their rallies. The die-hards are exposing themselves as well, they never have an intelligible response for "Why all the swastika flags at your rallies?" they jump right into namecalling and slurs and their own toxicity might be our best weapon against their politics. The tried-and-true racists are smaller in numbers and normal, sane Americans are starting to understand there's nowhere good this is heading. Might even happen soon enough to avert Holocaust 2.0.

Has it been affirmed that the Jan6 committee is getting his data or are we just assuming that because if this country functioned properly that would be the next logical (and only and moral and ethical) step? Don't be fuckin up this wet dream for me.

It's confirmed. It's in one of the links above. The plaintiff's lawyer has had requests from "several" law enforcement agencies and already said he'll cooperate. He confirmed the Jan. 6 committee specifically - but that's not the important one, all they can do is say "for shame" they aren't a court, they can't put anyone in jail, or take their money.

That may be true for some, but don't fool yourself about what the teehee crowd will do if they feel they can get away with it. The extreme haters get away with this shit, the others will go right along.

As a black man, do you really feel that giving them the benefit of the doubt is going to break your way. They may not don the sheet, but they'll acquit the lynch every damn time.

I would hope it isn't the last one.

And now that the texts are in hand, one would hope that evert set of parents who now sues him would receive at least the same amount.

Just tying him up in court for the rest of his miserable life would undermine his empire as well.

I didn't see that any judge had ordered the lawyer not to turn the records over to the law agencies and Jan 6th committee, so I assume they have been delivered today.

It's fait accompli that the attorney has them, this isn't a criminal case so there is no apparent jeopardy involved. Jones will have to sue in another court to stop the guy from doing anything, and long before that, like a good officer of the court - he'll comply with lawful requests and subpoenas.

Whether or not they're admissible in a criminal trial remains to be seen, but since the civil judge didn't see fit to exclude them, probably other civil judges will follow suit.

Alex Jones Ordered to Pay Extra $45 Million in Punitive Damages [Bloomberg]

So, now the judge has to interpret the "per defendant" cap.

It's less than the $150 million in the suit but it still sets up the ability for Jones' attorney to has for the damages to be be reduced to the capped amount, either via motion to the judge or upon appeal.

TLDR: The judgment amount is high enough that Jones will try to tie this up with endless appeals.

They'll go with the appeals. It's apparent that this judge is hell bent on inflicting as much damage as legally possible. It's probably a certainty that the grounds for appeal will be the release of his texts.
