Maher is on to something but the one thing that he didn't note is that this isn't new behavior.

Go back 60+ years and today's Southern Republicans were White Democrats who were known as the "yellow dog Democrats" because they would vote for a yellow dog before they would vote for a Republican.

It's not that they've taken over the the term, it's that they moved into the enemy camp because of the Voting Rights Act and several Supreme Court decisions they didn't like (e.g. busing, integrated schools, abortion, etc). When they moved, they also took their nasty politics with them.
