This is precisely what I'm talking about. In the South any quantum of Black disqualifies you as White, and it might seem like it ends there - with black and white, but it doesn't. There are terms for the gradation of skin tone - say "high yellow," or "blue black" to any Southerner and they'll know exactly what you're talking about.
... and the infamous "paper bag test".
I've mentioned this before in another thread but if you take a look at the censuses in the 19th century, you'll see a lot of "MU" listed for race.
When you move to the 20th century censuses, you won't see as many "MU" race enumerations in most parts of the south (Louisiana might be the exception because of the Creole culture). Race became a lot less ambiguous after the Civil War when there wasn't slavery as the proxy to distinguish "class".
That awareness of skin tone in non-white people, usually favoring the lighter over the darker; is a manifestation of centuries of White racism. It's one of the reasons that privilege is so insidious, it doesn't stop with White people.
Turns out that Gavidia is not Cuban-American, he's a Peruvian-American who resettled to South Florida once he made some money.
In the case of Gavidia, would generously be referred to as "carmelito", but as a Peruvian-American, he's more likely to be referred to as "indio" or "moreno". But it's no longer about race or ethnicity. It's now about money and affluence. His COVID exposure was on a family Spring Break trip at a resort in Aspen, Colorado, not in Miami.
This is Admiral's Cove- the neighborhood where he lived in Jupiter:
You would think that someone who is an immigrant and worked his way up from hotdog vendor to millionaire wouldn't be supporting Trump but I guess now that he has money (and privilege), he can afford to insult his Jewish neighbors, revel in his Trump tax cut for the wealthy and pretend that he fits into the wealthy crowd in Palm Beach County.
He might have started out selling hot dogs but he's now at a point where he has the money for a young pretty wife, a fancy boat and he can live in a fancy neighborhood but in the end, he's just another deplorable whose snooty neighbors don't consider him part of the club.
