And of course it allows Trump to go on claiming that 'millions' of immigrants are being brought over the border and illegally registered to vote for Biden, thereby providing the incendiary pretext when Trump loses that the election was stolen from him.

She's being represented by one of the evangelical activist legal groups - Liberty Counsel. They tend to take these cases that further their "we only like the freedom of religion part of the First Amendment" cases.

They won't pay her fine, though.

Liberty has also fallen down the rabbithole, too.

Oh, they're just waiting for a plaintiff with standing to file that case. Both sides do it but one side has an objective of expanding rights and the other side is out to destroying as many rights as they can.

Where would republicans be without our bankruptcy laws? I always thought the idea of a debtors prison sounded harsh but at least now I understand how some might find such notions appealing.
 
Punitive fines imposed by a court can't be discharged through bankruptcy. That would require a successful appeal.
 
I didn’t know that, now I feel cheerful. If a Court said that woman owed me money I would hound her just for the sport of it.
 
Unfortunately, her free lawyers are sure to attempt to appeal. These days every right-wing hack lawyer thinks the SC is going to save their obviously guilty client - not only from the crime but from their own incompetence.

Unfortunately, they are probably correct.

Under normal circumstances, SCOTUS is only supposed to rule on arguments in the original case. However, we discovered from Dobbs that this activist court full of conservative Catholics will go beyond the question under appeal. For example, the question before the Court in Dobbs was, "Is a 15 week abortion ban Constitutional?". Instead of answering that question, the Court went beyond that question and invalidated a previous SCOTUS decision in Roe and said, "Doesn't matter because we've decided that there's no Constitutional right for abortion, even though we have said there is a right for the past 50 years".

Imagine what this group of radical justices will do with the question, "Can a County Clerk refuse to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples?"

Think 'Giuliani'. He was court-ordered to pay a $148 million judgment to the 2 ladies and declared bankruptcy. The judgment cannot be vacated by the bankruptcy. No matter what happens now, he will still owe that $148 million, and the ladies can sue to collect it.
