Florida.
Alligators. Pythons. Meth. Porn performers.
And now measles.
Weston is an affluent Miami suburb to the west of I-75. It's having a measles outbreak.
Manatee Bay Elementary School sent out letters letting them know that at least 6 kids have been diagnosed with measles. Measles is one of the most contagious respiratory illnesses- each infected person can infect 12-16 people. In unvaccinated populations, it spreads like wildfire: 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people will get measles if they are exposed to someone who is infected. It's particularly dangerous to infants under 1 year old because children typically receive their first measles immunization at 12 months. Measles immunization is about 95% effective in preventing measles if a child has had two shots before starting school.
During the COVID pandemic, Governor DeSantis hired one of the horse paste seller doctors, Joseph Ladabo, somehow waiving the Florida State requirement for getting a medical license to install him as the Surgeon General of Florida.
Ladapo is out telling families not to vaccinate their children against measles. He's proposing that they should get "natural immunity" by getting measles. He also said that parents don't need to keep their kids out of school, even if they haven't been vaccinated. The State of Florida, through Ladapo is taking the "parental rights" angle: parents have the right to make a decision as to whether their children can get measles.
How far can the state go before a serious outbreak hits?
