It's not getting much publicity, but several activist groups have announced a purchasing boycott for 28-Feb against any company that has abandoned DEI policies. This includes Target.

Rebecca Cutler. Remember that name. She's the new head of MSNBC, hired from CNN.



After Trump's election in November, MSNBC's ratings dropped 57%. They have rebounded somewhat with the return of Rachel Maddow to Monday thru Friday in the 9PM slot but the viewer numbers for her show have been about 1/2 of Hannity's viewers over on Fox.

In January, the head of MSNBC, Rashida Jones, the first black woman to head a cable news network, resigned. Cutler was named as her replacement earlier in February. Since then, she has fired Joy Reid (a black woman), pulled Katie Phang's show (an Asian woman), pulled José Díaz-Balart's show (a Latino man), pulled Ayman Mohyeldin's show (a Muslim man), pulled Jonathan Capehart's show (a black man) and closed the Miami bureau.

Cutler also laid off the production staff of these shows and told them they could apply for other open positions at the network. In the case of Joy Reid's staff, they found out that their show was canceled from media reports and did not find out that they were losing their jobs until they confronted Cutler in a meeting at MSNBC headquarters. Reid's show, the Reid report, had been on MSNBC for 11 years, so many of the staffers had long tenures at the network.

There has been a major backlash at the network from black media outlets.

They're expanding "The Weekend" which is Alicia Menendez, Symone Sanders-Townsend and Steele. Because minorities are fine in groups, just not as the sole anchor?

My opinion on MSNBC? Too much Trump, not enough news. Most of my Democratic friends have tuned out the news because they are sick of that ugly Oopma Loompa face and the lies that come out of it. That, of course, is what autocrats want.

If MSNBC wants to rebuild their viewership, they need to go all-in. That's why the Reid firing was a mistake. Like her or not, Reid was stridently liberal and not shy about her opinions, which is what a certain segment of the liberal base wants to hear. She also covered a lot of issues for the black community that other networks don't cover.

The reason that Maddow's show is working is that she is showing what activists are doing. Every night, she starts with historical footage and she talks about what happened in the past, what progressives can do to resist what is happening now and she puts Democratic politicians on the hot seat when they need to be called out. She did that with Jeffries last night and it was overdue.
