In a world spiraling into war, with AI rising and jobs falling, it’s easy to miss the little things — like a spate of young Republicans praising Hitler.

Not so long ago, hugging Hitler was one of those lines you just didn’t cross in a decent democracy, and for good reason: fascism, the Second World War and genocide. Murdering millions of humans should never inspire admiration.

But that’s what’s been happening with increasing regularity, revealed by a recent string of unhinged text chains revealed among young Republican leaders. This isn’t an outlier or a one-off. It’s a pattern and a problem.

Last week, the Miami Herald revealed the contents of an extensive group chat started by the secretary of Miami-Dade County’s Republican Party, for conservative students at Florida International University. The chat quickly degenerated into a cesspool of racism, violent fantasies, and Hitler-admiration. The n-word was used over 400 times, including in ruminations on the best ways to murder African Americans (curb-stomping and crucifixion were mentioned by one allegedly pro-life member of the chat). The chat also included extensive references to women as “whores,” fantasies about all-white immigration laws, and free-flowing hatred toward Jewish Americans. The chat group was named “Gooning in Agartha” — which is a strange combo platter suggesting ornate masturbation rituals in “Nazi heaven.”

The Dolores Huerta part of the story made me gasp. There's still a tendency to excuse the behavior... "Well, maybe the girls misunderstood his intention"... "Memories get cloudy with time"... Yeah, we're supposed to believe the women but it's not always easy when it's someone who is a hero to many. How did this get kept quiet for so long?

We're finding more and more that men in power have gotten away with really awful treatment of women and girls. I wish I could say that the US is closer to reckoning with the way that women are treated but it doesn't appear that we're there or that we will be there any time soon.

There's a lot of stuff that got named after Chávez after 1993. It's time to remove his name where possible. There are better men and women who deserve to have their names recognized.

DeAngelis is a senior fellow at the American Federal for Children, which donates to candidates that support school vouchers to divert taxpayer money to religious schools.

DeAngelis is also an anti-LGBT activist. He has appeared on Fox News accusing schools of "focusing on LGBTs instead of ABCs".

And like all of these reality deplorables- bachelors/bachelorettes, Kardashians, Duggars, Chrisley, et al- they exist and profited because people watched the shows. They're all deplorables and it shouldn't be a surprise that they end up being found out as criminals.

Nor should it be a surprise, given the number of posts in this thread about evangelicals diddling with minors, that the Duggars would have at least two sons who were in possession of CSAM or involved in exploitation of minors. Nor would it be a surprise that there's a segment of their fan base breathing a sigh of relief that the victims of the abuse weren't male.
