Which is exactly why I didtched my Windows phone within 6 months of getting it.
The Virgin salesman said they had been inundated with complaints since Nokia had started using Windows OS

I know its not the way it SHOULD happen but why not assign a word that the phone WILL recognise?

Yes, it does that as well. My phone can do the network hotspot thing, also. About the only thing I CAN'T get my phone to do is the dishes! Or the laundry. But my partner likes to do those.

Because I use the names I actually call them; for example, "Tofer".

And it offends me to have to adapt to the programming, having had it drilled into me term after term in computer classes that it's the job of the programmer to conform to the wants of the customer, not the other way around.
 
I've found that speaking slowly has helped with the hits on my calls.

But there is only so much that speech recognition can do. AI can only "understand" so much, and extrapolate so much out of an audio signal. Have you ever tried to use the closed captions on Youtube videos? It looks like they've got Chinese speakers trying to figure out what English speakers are trying to say.

It doesn't have to be a wireless connection, but it can. It can also connect through Bluetooth connectivity..... but that's standard with phones, still somewhat new with desktops.

I think we may be splitting hairs a bit w/ "Bluetooth" vs. "Wireless".
It may be a different technique than "WiFi", but it's still "Wireless".

I agree on the Speech Recognition. It doesn't do well with my Radio Station Call Letters/numbers, either.
 
Bluetooth and "wireless" aren't exactly interchangeable. For instance, a peripheral device capable of connecting through Bluetooth will not be able to connect to non-Bluetooth wireless devices. And devices designed to connect through WiFi will not be able to communicate with Bluetooth only devices. The technologies are quite different, despite accomplishing similar tasks.
 
I understand one "speaks language/protocol A" while the other "speaks language/protocol B".

Neither one needs wires - it's wave transmission through the air.

That's why I differentiated between Bluetooth and WiFi, but called both of them "Wireless" - because they are both wireless technologies.
 
The problem with that though, is that "wireless" suggests network. Bluetooth is not capable of network usage. It is one-to-one, although some phones or peripheral devices can connect to up to two different devices at one time (to accommodate a keyboard and headset together, or phone and tablet with one headset).

Good thread. Need to bookmark it because I want to root my phone at some point in future. Luckily, it's a generic Samsung (no provider crap) and unlocked -- picked it up in India a while back. FYI Samsung Duos. Underpowered POS. I'm hoping rooting it and removing all the bloatware will make it more useable.
 
If you are referring to the Pantech Burst you are absolutely correct..im locked in for that piece of shit for another year or so!!!!!

What phone company? With Verizon I'm stuck with the contract but can switch back to my old phone -- which I've done twice when the "upgrade" proved to be less than an improvement.
 
My last contract was renewed in Nov 2012
I got a Lumia from Virgin
I hated it. I liked the phone but not the Windows OS
So I bought a HTC Desire (Android 2.2) after 5 months and liked it, except it didn't have enough memory and I couldn't work out how to root it
In November 2013 (still a year from my contract renew date and the chance to get a new phone for free) I bought a secondhand HTC Desire HD. I sold the HTC Desire on eBay for £10 less than I bought the HTC Desire HD for
I am so happy with it. It does everything I want it to do. I haven't come anywhere near running out of memory. My only gripe, and this applies to virtually every mobile smartphone, is that he battery doesn't last long enough.
I have another 8 months til I can upgrade for free but I would happily go for another HTC of some sort
