Coulter’s official title will be “Gay Icon.” “Ann Coulter is a brilliant and fearless leader of the conservative movement, we are honored to have her as part of GOProud’s leadership,” said Christopher Barron, Chairman of GOProud’s Board. “Ann helped put our organization on the map. Politics is full of the meek, the compromising and the apologists – Ann, like GOProud, is the exact opposite of all of those things. We need more Ann Coulters.”

You know that I'm a gay conservative, but there needs to be a little clarification about GOProud.

GOProud does NOT explicitly support same-sex marriage, but rather they don't take a stance either way on it. However, they do not support a "federal marriage amendment" because GOProud believes that marriage laws should be determined by each state.

GOProud does NOT support hate crime legislation because they don't prevent "hate crimes." If some homophobic violent person is calling you "faggot" right before he starts to punch you, you yelling out, "Stop! I'm unarmed but I will charge you with a hate crime!!" is probably NOT going to stop you from getting hurt. If somebody murders you because you are gay, will charging afterwards them with a "hate crime" bring you back to life?

Instead, conservatives of all stripes (including GOProud) believe that ALL violent crimes, regardless of motive, should be punished harshly, with no early release or parole. To help prevent gays from being targeted in the first place, most gay conservatives & GOProud recommend that gays learn how to shoot (& carry) a gun. At a minimum, gays should know basic defense skills (like basic martial arts), carry pepper spray, etc. This will help prevent us from being targets of violent crime.

P.S. I also read Ann Coulter's book Demonic:How the Liberal Mob Is Endangering America I was chuckling to myself as I was reading, because she says the things that we know are true, but are too afraid to say it out loud, because that would not be politically correct.

But desperate times call for desperate measures, and GOProud is nothing if not desperate. The group suffered a humiliating rebuff this year when the American Conservative Union announced that it would not in the future be welcome at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Many hardliners found GOProud’s presence at the conference so repugnant that they boycotted the event.

“Marriage is not a civil right,” Coulter told the roomful of gay conservatives. “You’re not black.” She also said GOProud was a natural ally of anti-abortion groups, because, “as soon as they find the gay gene, you know who’s getting aborted.”

A poll over at One News Now showed that 63% believe her latest coupling with GOProud “undermines her testimony as a born-again Christian,” with 27% saying it “damages her credibility as a conservative columnist.”

Not surprisingly, the reaction to GOProud's cynical and desperate decision to try to get some buzz by stimulating Coulter's voraciously attention sucking micro-penis has been getting generally negative reactions from both liberals and conservatives.

This is really what makes Coulter and GOProud such natural bedfellows—they are simply misunderstood. Try as they may to get us to just “lighten up,” we keep taking their words and positions seriously instead of winking and nodding at the inside joke.

What Coulter and GOProud fail to get is that self-loathing is no joking matter. Self-deprecating humor, a la Steven Wright or Rodney Dangerfield, is funny because it contains a kernel of truth about human insecurities. The “humor” Coulter and GOProud engage in, however, is dangerous, mainly because in its attempt to be “funny” it simply reaffirms and strengthens the stereotypes it means to lampoon. A woman against women serving in the military?
