Ok here is a good point. There are southerns who are highly educated and will tell you that the confederate flag is a discriminitory symbol and a defense for prejudice people to hide behind as an excuse for "Heritage."

Now all Mexicans can see a mexican flag and say... yea.. its a symbol of their heritage. All Gays can point to the rainbow flag and agree that it's a symbol of gay pride! So... why are there southerns themselves that say its a symbol of racism and hatred? Why When they are the the group that is supposed to associate it as heritage and yet thats where they are from? Why only a select few now consider it heritage and not ALL southerners?

Because the Confederate flag they use is the Confederate battle flag and became a symbol of segregation and defiance when it was adopted by the KKK. The true flag of the Confederacy is the Stars and Bars
http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/us-csa1.html I will agree the Stars & Bars should be acceptable as part of Southern heritage just as the flag of other countries is acceptable as part of the heritage of people from other countries. Preferably, we should all be honoring only one flag, that of our nation (whichever that may be).

^I disagree, honoring material items is the cornerstone of 80% of the world's problems. We should be honoring people, not clothe.

But in way we do honor clothe in our National Anthem The Star Spangled Banner most other countries National Anthems are honoring the people or person or even the county it self our is honoring the flag

I don't get it, we honor people by honoring songs and fabric? I say we honor people by respecting them, not things that represent them. I'm not saying we should go around cutting up flags and farting when someone sings the national anthem, but I can think of some people who could use a lot more help than just a "Hey, nice flag you got there."

Once we've mastered the art of respecting for PEOPLE, then we can move on to all the symbols and insignia.

I am talking about countries national anthems the English National Anthem honors their sovereign a person
God Save the Queen (standard version)
God save our gracious Queen,1Long live our noble Queen,God save the Queen:Send her victorious,Happy and glorious,Long to reign over us:God save the Queen. O Lord, our God, arise,Scatter her enemies,And make them fall.Confound their politics,Frustrate their knavish tricks,On Thee our hopes we fix,God save us all. Thy choicest gifts in store,On her be pleased to pour;Long may she reign:May she defend our laws,And ever give us causeTo sing with heart and voiceGod save the Queen.*
The National Anthem of the People Republic of China Called the March of the Volunteers Honor the people of China

Arise! All who refuse to be slaves!
Let our flesh and blood become our new Great Wall!
As the Chinese nation faces its greatest peril,
All forcefully expend their last cries.
Arise! Arise! Arise!
Our millions of hearts beat as one Nation,
Brave the enemy's fire, March on!
Brave the enemy's fire, March on!
March on! March on! On!

Canada's National Anthem is in honor of the land

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee

Where as our National Anthem Honor our Flag a symbol

O! say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Most countries National anthem honor either a person, the people of the nation, or the nation itself our is the only country not to do so. We honor the flag in ours

A friend gave me one and I have it in my house. When I have company I display it over the sofa to get a reaction out of people. I've never had one person say oh I'm happy to see you are proud of some sort of heritage. No. I get dirty looks and ask what the fuck is wrong with me. I've had 6 black friends come over and they seem VERY offended. I don't know why this issue has taken so much interest for me... but it has. A friend of mine who is jewish and a major activist in gay rights stopped in my living room and tried to ignore it. Finally she said she felt offended and asked If I knew the true history behind it. I said I totally agreed but apparently there are some people in trailer parks and on a predominantly gay forum named JUB which seem to disagree and that me displaying it is a test to see if I'm right or wrong.

My uncle is taking me and joe to Indiana near the KKK mansion. I am planning on burning it in public for them to see. What a treat. Till then I'm using it as toilet paper

Why is it mean to display and test people.. if its truly heritage for those that are from the south and nothing to do with a discriminatory message?

I dont take pride in a White Supremacist flag. I'm just seeing if my company will see it as heritage or if some will see it as racism! Because apparently.. some foolishly consider it a good positive thing

The flag is the ultimate representation of honor towards important people. it is symbolic of these united states. To imply blind adoration of a temporary Queen or of an equally temporary piece of rock is misguided. IMHO

The stars and stripes represent an idea. And while you can say ...

"Oh woe is me it isnt everything I think it should be"

you then have to step back and realize it is everything of all who make it.

Idealism can be carried into space, it has no boundary.

I'm not a troll i've posted about tech support. pics of me, music, entertainment, the election, I'm having a good time. I Do not go outta my way to piss people off and bring misery into the world! I like to challenge the thinking of others and learn new things myself. I like to challenge what is considered the "norm" or the ways that society has set itself in. My mom always said you can't change the world.. but you can always put a dent in it. Someone once said the earth is round and everyone thought he was crazy and looking for attention. You just never know. People take words too seriously.

No people take themselves too seriously. Standard JUB CE&P tactics. Don't like the message then attack the messenger.

BTW I am not defending your point of view. Simply your right to bear it and share it.

Its ok to disagree. I like to see how the world works.. how i work.. how i work with other people... and to use my brain into thinking about things most people wouldn't think about. I like who i am and how I think. I feel I contribute to this world and I have a purpose. So there.

There seems to be no point to this thread. So you hung it up in your living room and random people came over...so?

Always remember: you will encounter ideas that are different from your own. How you accept them is what makes you who you are.

Oh, and I imagine the mods will come through and clean this thread of all the incendiary posts towards one another, as this is CE&P where such talk is unwarranted.

Marley, what Cher is doing is sorta like performance art. He doesn't do it because he likes the Confederacy. He's wondering why other people make a fetish out of it, if fetishism is a part of this. He's making a semiotics experiment in order to get into people's minds a bit.
I'm sure quite a number of other people have done similar things.

(Smile[or don't]! You're on Cher's Candid Semiotics Experiment!)

In order for it to be an experiment, you'd have to have and prove that you have several different forms of education levels in each of the individuals that the experiment was conducted on. You'd also have to have them from all backgrounds, all areas of the country. Otherwise, whatever point he was trying to prove, was never proven. He doesn't have a point, because hanging a flag and getting a reaction out of a few people in which he has no statistics and proof of statistics is not proving any point. These could have been people who live up north that were just TOLD the flag was bad, and nothing else. Therefore, this entire thread is worthless.

Do you see a dent being put in the world as a result of this discussion? Doesn't seem like you are making much headway here on this topic, if any at all.

I was leaving work late one night and encountered a group of tailgaters from out of town on their way to a country music festival. When I saw that confederate flag waving from the pickup truck, I damn near passed out. It's a symbol of hate, slavery, and segregation. Young people need to study the living history of the civil war by reading personal confederate and union correspondence: the "Interenet" of the time. You'll learn, as I have, that there was NOTHING honorable about the confederate cause. I'm originally from Alabama (before I escaped to freedom) and remember being called N*GG*R by whites waving the confederate flag. And the nazi swastika? That's bad too.

Thank god someone is full of sense around here.

I'm just shocked that a forum of gay men defend it.

Everyone on the forum says its heritage and should not be offensive to anyone because some people see it as southern pride. I hung it in my living room to see if everyone on JUB was right. So if its heritage.. why was everyone offended as they saw it? Im not hanging it out of racism nor heritage.. its an experiment to see what the majority of friends will think of it. My in laws from Louisiana are southern.. to them its racism and they're white. They AGREE with me. I burned it yesterday. My friends are not mad at me nor hurt and understand my curiosity. My friend Angela who is black said some people are that dumb to see it as anything but Racism.

Nothing good came from the Confederate Cause. THANK YOU!
